We'd already bollocked the lurcher for going to ground but never in a million years did we expect him to draw the pair out Quote Link to post

Once they get that knack they can be an absolute god send on a dig. Quote Link to post
Apache... 2,588
My lurcher is a pain in the f****n arse, if there's room she's gone I had a dig a few weeks back and after backfilling let her off the lead to walk back the jeep she flew to ground 40mins in there ffs, she'll catch bolters but have to tie her up sometimes . 3 Quote Link to post

A dog goes to ground in a 1 holer and is dug at 6 ft in an hour, a different dog is dropped into a 20 holer, gets the run around for 2 hours and is then dug at 3ft. Which dog has put in the better performance? 6 Quote Link to post
dillydog 8,530
The difference with small places and shallow places is the dog in question knows the cavalry is on the way. One of the first things I was taught by the old boys around me is if you want a dog out sooner rather than later is to walk away and be quiet. The dog that stays and does the job through to the end when he can't sense you one way or the other is by far the better animal. 8 Quote Link to post
dillydog 8,530
I had this just before dark a few days ago, it was over and hour before I even started as I was waiting for reinforcements lol. The dog sat and worked the quarry nice and steady but had no idea if I was still there, I've seen plenty over the years that would walk just to see if you were still there ! 8 Quote Link to post

Had a terrier years ago you could drop anywhere and if he didn’t get a bolt in a deep place he’d be out in a half hour lol. Did a hell of a lot of digging to that terrier in shallow places and he never came away if he could hear you moving about above him. He wouldn’t of been for everyone but that terrier accounted for a shit load of foxes. 5 Quote Link to post
