Never Thought The Day Would Come

Recommended Posts

Ithink i have the best land in Leicestershire [ and a lot of it] also i have two blocks of land in Linconshire which amount to over 6 thousand acres, in the past i was limited to what i caught because i only had a market for a bout 80 a week , this year there is almost nothing , this morning i set a few snares on the side of main rail line which is always been good for a few and was looking very good at the end August and found it had been strimmed and gassed by BR something they have never done before in this area, i have had land in the past that bordered BR and that has been gassed but always in the spring when the cover is down .

A couple of shots of the line , not as good as i hoped but there is two miles of this mainly bracken and masses of blackberryall been strimmed and gassed , i used to lamp this in the 60s and it was top draw ,very fast land but if the dog knocked the rabbit off its run ,it was curtains, i was just going to snare it this season so we see what is there in the morning.

Do you mean Network Rail mate BR is a thing of the past and as far as I know NR do not gas the bunnies and it looks like its been sprayed with weed killer

No, it has been cut and the holes have been filled and the rabbits are not there so i assume it has been gassed two years ago i cleared rabbits at Flash Farm Narborough on the Leicester to Brum line that was gassed all the way out to Croft..

I would also question their effectiveness when used in an extensive burrow system... :hmm:

Let's hope you see a few holes, dug back out,...a rabbit deserves so much better than dying, choking to death, deep underground...

Same round here was looking so good back in august felt sure it was going to be a good one 3 trips out with the ferrets and we have had 6 between us.

Some areas can't get to yet on account of birds on ground. Things might pick up yet, it must have been vhd no signs of myxi found a couple of dead ones in bracken that looked perfectly healthy

not long back, I could go in there, and come out with a bunny or 2. but now empty warrens, my dog and ferrets I feel sorry for

Kill em when they breed and there is seldom much left, not having a pop mucker but if we hunt all season,as you do,something as to give.

Went out today and whilst there were still quite a few about mixi was everywhere. Half of what i caught was infected, I reckon a month ago I would have caught double and it's not finished yet. Mixi has been lighter round me for last few years but it's back with a vengeance.

A few weeks ago,in my immediate vicinity, there was at least 100 rabbits within 70 acres, this weekend there is about 2 aided by the rabbit pox.Ive certainly influenced the local bunny populace and the 20 or 30 ive nailed this summer with the terriers certainly lends itself to the fact that if id left them alone, even after the influence of the pox,ill warrant id be seeing 5 or 6 now.

You do have to manage your spots a bit even though your at the mercy of mixi. I had a little perm and when my dog was 2 I could go there with the lamp and knock 3 or 4 over nearly every time. Easy access and perm so i could go early it was just to easy to get lazy and instead of walking the dog just wait till dark and have a run or two. The place is empty now so lesson learnt there. They all count

That's what really f****ed me off today, I had been really sensible with this place. Loads of rabbits but never went overboard and just shot a few in the summer to show my face then mixi rolls in and ruins my careful 'gamekeeping'. Still nothing than can be done, they will come back but will have to be careful this season not to take to many and leave as many as possible for breeding next year.

Almost the only rabbits I see around my way now are on roundabouts! I've probably seen less than half a dozen on my shrinking permission during the last few years and, as a result, I didn't even bother to replace my last two ferrets when they died about four years ago.

Still walking/working the dogs though and I've got a pup booked for next summer...a walk's not the same without a dog to share it with. We still get the occasional squirrel or pigeon...and two holidays per year in Devon to remind them what a rabbit smells like. ;)
