Dont know where it was from but just watched a spitfire for a good half hour flying up loch lihnnie and then it headed up towards ben nevis. Pilot must hqve have seen me and a few others watching as

I saw the Lancaster with Spitfire escort at the weekend too. Nothing impressive though, just going from A to B.   Had a cracking experience a couple months ago while walking the fresh stubbles. Two

Yep. Spitfire is iconic to see but those Merlin engines and the sound they make as they cut through the sky around you is spectacular

The sound of a Merlin always makes the hairs on my neck stand up.

Talking of iconic sounding engines from iconic British planes, the 'howl' from the Rolls Royce Olympus engines on the Vulcan Bomber during takeoff was something to behold and all. I count myself lucky in that there used to be an airshow at RAF Brawdy here in Pembs every year and I got to see and hear a fair number of iconic aircraft in close proximity as a kid. Spitfire, EE Lightning, Mosquito, Lancaster, Tornado F3 interceptor, Harrier, the mighty Vulcan, and loads more..

Vulcan 'howl:'

Yep, Vulcan was always a treat to view. Used to attend a few airshows and have seen some impressive flying. At Mildenhall one year got to see a F14 Tomcat flown by a lunatic, now that was impressive. Another one that sticks in my mind was at Biggin Hill one year and they had arranged for a Virgin 747 to divert and do a low pass along the runway, it even dipped it's wings,

The twin engine F14s were and still are very good fighter craft in their arena. A lot of planes today are built on what was learnt there, in regards to agiltiy etc. The moveable wings proved in high speed flight, a delta (swept back) is better. Now we have fixed delta wings and moveable engines to maximise the potential ;)

Spitfires are very special to me. My grandad flew one in the war. We had one fly over the farm about a month back doing acrobatics, rolls, dives etc. Really made me think about how it would have been to be flying one in the battle of Britain. Terrifying I think.

They weren't rolling for a laugh in them days. Respect to your old grandad mate ;) Edited by mushroom

A bloke I know has a spitfire, he don't do anything with it (even though he can fly and has a plane) he just leaves it in a container accumulating value ! Lol

i think the last one sold in the uk was by christies and it fetched 3.1 million in 2015 so very nice to have tucked away ,I recon you could double the last price now
