Blackbriar 8,569
I've long admired Tom Crean, the Arctic explorer. Among his many remarkable exploits, is probably the greatest act of selfless courage I've ever come across..... He and two colleagues were sent back from the final leg of Scott's ill-fated push to the South Pole. Following a long and dangerous detour, Edward Evans had scurvy and snow blindness, and was being pulled on a sledge, at a pace of only 2 miles a day. They eventually found themselves 35 miles from safety, but with only 2 days food left.....it may as well have been a thousand miles ! Crean decided that their only hope was for him to go on alone, and fetch help. Carrying no food, equipment or means of navigation, he set off into a blizzard, knee deep in snow, knowing that if he failed not only would he die, but so would his friends..... He walked non-stop for 18 hours and arrived at base camp, in a state of physical collapse, just ahead of a storm that would almost certainly have killed him. A rescue party was sent the following day, and his friends were (just !) rescued alive. While he was recovering, an orderly found a piece of chocolate in his pocket, and asked why he hadn't eaten it. Crean said he was "saving it for an emergency". A truly remarkable man !

bird 10,014
My Dad. Atb +2 , deff , i will be honest here me and him never really got on, in his last 6 months of life , he was dying with stomach cancer , he never showed fear to me or my 2 brothers , 2 sisters , he always said to me as the eldest son, live for to day forget tomorrow . the last week, he called us in one at a time to speak to him he told me he loved me and was proud of me as man, and he loved his grand son my lad, that was the last thing he ever said to me, i hope when i die , i am as brave as him , and show dignity in death

neems 2,406
In all honesty I can't think of a man whose bravery and sacrifice is more overlooked than Rudolph Hess. He willingly sacrificed his legacy and suffered a fate worse than death, against the orders of his leader to try and stop the war with Britain and save millions of lives. And even after he'd failed he never capitulated or apologised, telling the courts even if he had the opportunity to do it all again, but knew he'd fail and be burned at the stake he'd act exactly as he did and he regrets nothing. I had never thought of Hess in that way. You are right. Two political figures I am grateful to are Henry Hunt who fought successfully for the right for ordinary (landless/untitled) people to vote. And Nye Bevan who 'invented' the NHS and the state pension. I also hugely admire Charles Darwin for having the balls to publish his theory of evolution. He knew he would suffer ridicule and furious hostility from many different sectors of society (not least the churches) but he published in the name of Truth. In doing so he released us from the tyranny of religion. (Well some of us anyway.)
