I think we are cross purposes here, so just to be clear, everything all the time falls under the classification of strategy……from being polite to the waiter when you want to get looked after on a night out to telling Ali Ba Ba you are going to burn his kids alive with napalm !

I get the impression, and I’ll hold my hand up if I’m wrong, that you don’t think out and out barbarity is a strategy and that’s fair enough…..but I’m saying, it is, because almost everything is.

Now, we can argue about possible outcomes until the cows come and that would be fair enough but I’ve already said, I don’t know…..and, I assert long term, nobody does.

We could argue if it’s the most sensible strategy and again, that would be fair enough…..I don’t hold any strong views about wether it is but I get a feeling you sort of have a view that your fairly convinced of.

I don’t because we don’t know all the in and out and probably never will.

What I do hold a strong view about is all the things I have said are just facts of life….they are a constant wether you are a private person or a nation state.

Good honest and decent response. And I think we may have been talking at cross purposes now that you explained your view of it. To me strategy is a higher level of ‘planning’ or ‘how’. Extreme violence or kill everyone isn’t really a strategy. It might form part of a strategy or even be considered doctrine but in a war planning scenario, say the falklands as an example. If Admiral Fieldhouse had just said “my plan is simply to go down there with the boys and leather the f**k our the argies, ma’am!” and not actually explain how that force is directed and why that is better than a more targeted or restrained use of force then surely you see how that would raise eyebrows? It’s chest pumping stuff nonetheless. The PM would be unlikely to need to know tactical or operational plans up front but they’d need to see sufficient high level planning to have confidence that their goals were achievable, and that in a nutshell is what I refer to as strategy. 

Strategy is of course used day to day to mean any level of plan.

This is why I believe that tactically and operationally the US have outright dominated Iran. Absolutely without question. But I’m a long way from being convinced that what Trump started in his first administration and has continued now is a winning strategy. Assuming the goals are broadly in line with furthering US security, power and interests.
