blackmaggie 3,377
I have just watched a documentary with Clark Carlisle about depression after sportsman finish there careers players like Lee Henry Liam McKenzie who works in his dads gym but there's been others to like gazza frank Bruno and some others who have taken there lives like Gary speed rip for all the money in sports do they do enough when sportsmen finish there careers or for youngsters who don't make it I know depression affects all walks of life but the pressure on sport men or women must be unbearable at times with the media
unlacedgecko 1,467
It happens with a lot of careers. I read once on a U.S. Veterans website that "PTSD is the realisation that you will never be that cool again".
rob284 1,682
Same with people who retire early, then they realise they dont have a hobby because theyve lived to work all their lives. Hate the thought of retiring.

Hate the thought of retiring. I've got plenty of hobbies. I could retire tomorrow and not be bored.

pesky1972 5,667
Is not having money the sole cause of clinical depression? I know money troubles contribute in some cases but it's rarely the only reason people suffer. Saying that people with money shouldn't be depressed is pig ignorance..., because the evidence is everywhere that they do. On the topic.., some of the best publicised issues with sportsmen have been footballers and boxers. Two sports where your career normally ends early thirties. These will be guys that have normally lived and breathed the sport since they were young kids, its all they know, and all of a sudden are left idle with no 'purpose' in life. I think some just find it difficult to adjust and get some direction. Sad but then there are plenty of men in their thirties who aren't ex sportsmen and who suffer, and even take their lives. That's just how it is and I can't see much changing.

mattyg 1,862
Every single one of us are only a small step from depression or going nuts so to speak. Sports/media "stars" are in the spotlight so we hear about their problems a lot more than dave the postman or Bob the ex squaddie unfortunately. Although having a few bob in the bank will certainly make being depressed a lot less depressing. Matt

neil cooney 10,416
One thing I've noticed over the years when I've met or got to know folk who were fit, healthy and mentally healthy but in their 70s and 80s is that they always had a reason to get up in the morning. Whether it was to feed a few horses, let the pigeons or chickens out or go fishing they always had a reason to get out of bed. On the other hand I can think of wealthy depressants who'd lie in bed all day and when they did eventually get up they looked straight away for their escape ie. the pub, the bottle or the pills. They rarely live long happy lives.
TUFFTY 1,484
You don't see many sports stars living rough on the streets or topping themselves so it can't that bad ........ Carlisle tried to top himself several times. Fash did top himself. Gazza also tried and poor big frank. Kenny samson was/is living rough on the streets. Its Not about how much money they have in their bank. They are All normal people like me and you.
