its a secret lol!

its a small feed ( called a bait) we give them a small handfull of cooked pasta and a 2 sardines...others give chicken breast ect ect their then taken back from the "catch" and towled down and often sponged down with cold water and given a drink of milk or cold tea to settle the stomach put back into their traveling jackets and into the motor then onto the next class of hounds ( restricted.maidens,pups. puppy maidens ect ect)

 

 

thanks, they must really well trained , with all the things that could get up in front of them (sheep. game, etc) as with hounds in general they have somebody not to far away , these are on there own , just pure pack instinct going on here, very well behaved dogs

Trail hounds look similar to foxhounds but are leaner in build. They originally were bred from foxhounds with other crosses to get a faster hound with a good nose. Various out-crosses were tried many years ago before the present type evolved, including pointer, harrier and sheepdog. Nowadays, only a foxhound is very occasionally bred with a trail hound. They are bred for stamina and speed.

A 10 mile trail takes between 25 minutes and 40 minutes and typically covers all terrain, from low-lying pasture to steep fell sides with streams, walls and ditches to be crossed in-between.

What is Hound Trailing?

Hound trailing is a sport which takes place all over the Lake District between April and October. It dates back over 200 years. Individual owners get their hounds fit, then take them to race meetings, which are held most days throughout the summer. The hounds run a circular route of up to 10 miles over field and fell, following a strong aniseed and paraffin scent. Owners and spectators wait at the meet where bets are laid on the outcome.

I did see a American bred hound on here one time a can't mind the name of the breed but it looked as racy and as any lurcher .

July hounds are supposed to have some greyhound in them. They are a little leggier it seems than running Walkers. Both are mostly used for coyote's, and run to catch.

 

What I don't understand is the value of larger hounds for hunting. I have some experience with bear hounds, and they are generally smaller. They may have to run for several hours, and have enough left to keep a bear in a tree, or keep him pegged while not getting killed if he won't climb. 45-60# is about average for them.

A lurched will hunt by .sound.sight.scent.my bull whip does it perfectly cause I trained it that way.for tracking wounded ran on quarry.hell go out as far as needed. Then straight return.when Thiers 3o foxhounds ripping a fox up don't mean it will do one single handed

Usually it's the type of country you hunt that dictates the size of your hounds, not the size of your quarry.

With the mounted packs a good fast gallop is what's wanted not a slow stop start type hunt. So for a fast hunt a fast leaner type of hound is wanted.

With hunting the pack must work together to hopefully outwit the quarry but with trailing the pack is competing with one another and it's the line that dictates the course.

Interestingly the Grand Canyon hounds in the USA keep 3 or 4 couple of 3/4 foxhounds 1/4 saluki for getting to and accounting for the coyote when he makes for open ground.

 

Perthshire Keeper or Darbo, does Tony Dobbin still keep trail hounds ? He was one of the best National Hunt jockeys IMO and I heard once that he has some outstanding trail hounds.

Used to enjoy the trail hounds at MB's Day In The Dales show.

 

I remember being a little concerned the way they bolted that food down as soon as they crossed the line!

 

If i lived in that part of the world they would be something i'd deffo have a go with.

I find a lot of lads want lurchers for point and slip lamping and ferreting !! You can have a terrier to ferret aslong as it marks I wouldn't call a good ferreting dog a good day dog !! Other lads like lurchers that will hunt up and cast that's the type of dog I like can't stand a dog being around my feet drives me insane ! We all have different opinions in lurchers I would try abit of hound on my lurchers and for giving mouth on a hunt if it's when in sights it's quarry be f***ing handy that !!

Why would you need voice with collars on. I wouldnt want a dog screaming its head off. if you got a dog that will truely cast there a good chance it will go places it shouldnt be. f**k highlighting that with dog giving voice.
