Don't look for an argument where there isn't one, Trev. 

I love all whippets, ped and non-ped.  I've owned and worked both, from the UK to Australia. I'd have another in a heartbeat if the circumstances were right.

I said in my post that one of my "whippets" had some greyhound and a dash of collie, but I've had "non-peds" that were all whippet, but not registered.

As I said; it's just MY opinion that non- peds are superior to peds; others , of course, have different opinions, and I fully respect that.

You've got me wrong mate I'm not after a argument , I like both too but never raced them just worked them , we all know what most call a non ped whippet is more superior in speed but some ped whippets have more wind, my opinion is if it's got any other breed in the mix it's not a whippet to me.

can you say why you believe the non ped is the better dog?. genuine interest here, I have never owned a straight whippet so can't really comment myself.

Surely it’s self explanatory, if it’s got more than one breed in the mix it’s not a whippet, it’s a whippet based lurcher, you wouldn’t call a 3/4 grey 1/4 whippet a non ped greyhound

I respect your opinion, and agree that, in general, the peds have more wind, especially for a long nights lamping.

Most, if not all, breeds have something else in their lineage if you go way back, but the non-ped whippets have regular injections of greyhound blood, and the many owners and enthusiasts still call them "whippets", and most, especially the racers, would be offended if you called them lurchers ! LOL !

I got kicked off a whippet forum when I complained about the BWRA raising the weight limit from 32lb to 55lb, and said there had been smaller greyhounds won the Waterloo Cup. Once they get that big, they are undistinguishable from greyhounds.

Everyone has their own opinion, but I still like a morning at the "whippets", my two local clubs have both ped and non-peds, and they are all referred to as whippets, but I can understand your sentiment about not being whippets if they have something else in them.

all dog breeds are a combination of breeds to start with, but as  these were the product of working men striving to create a  faster sporting dog from what was at hand,  we should applaud them, but further additions surely make them something less, in my eyes anyway. I agree about the wind thing, I always think whippet has more than a greyhound.

I've often thought that there's two running dog "types" that could be considered "breeds" in their own right;

The coursing dog and the non-ped whippet.

They both breed true to type and can trace their "pedigree's" way, way back.

Could they be registered as "The British Coursing Hound", and "The British Race Dog" ?

On second thoughts; I wouldn't want the Kennel Club getting their hands on them and ruining them, so perhaps best to just leave it as it is ! LOL !
