This turned into what I didn't want it to, mainly because I can't keep my big mouth shut and will bite easy. I'll leave it by saying Nick was and is THE best man I ever saw with a terrier, his terrie

heres my line of dogs.

to me a line of terriers is a term used loosely for say nuttall or gould its a broad church all sorts breed them and for many different reasons some may have very little blood of any kennel , within

There are a lot of my takes on it does anybody have a definitive answer on this one must

someone on here who knows for sure

Everybody is right on here
I'm big your small I'm right your wrong I'm smart your dumb and there's nothing you can do about it! Edited by the goat

A number of breeders may breed from a Line...but the dogs individual breeders Produce within that line... sons, daughters.grandsons ect ect are what i refer too as a 'Family'...as they have the stamp of that breeder on them...a family within a line so to speak

so for arguments sake if I had a pair of nuttall dogs they are his line but if I bred them at home they the pups would be of that family is that what you mean

If you get some terriers from a mans breeding and after a generation or two they are still going strong then they are your line.

IF, however they start to go wrong then they are the other mans line.

Same goes when you use an outcross. If it clicks it's your breeding. If it doesn't it the the other blood that's shite.

If a man breed 5 or 6 generations from one mans stock does that make them dogs his line or the bloke he got his foundation dogs off ???? Lol

I say because of all the hard work you've put in to take the line forward 5 or 6 generations it becomes yours in my eye's but it's up to you to remind yourself were the line started

Personally I don't think they can call it their own line if they're just carrying on another mans work. Now if they had done some outcrosses then folded them back in to the line I think they'd have the right to call it their own distinct line after a fair few generations.

i agree bgd the bringing of 2 lines togeather is a creation the carrying on a line is just that carrying on trying to better somthing ... still the breeders of your base stock deserve the credit for that nomatter witch way you choose :-)

For me I wouldn't lay claim that something is my line/strain/family call it what you will, until I had achieved some input that made it mine. You can keep another mans line going for as many gens as you like it will always be he's if you follow he's path. That is until ive made that line better more consistent in work by adding something and making it better than the starting article, then I would say it's my line ! Until then you will always be a man with Nuttall or Steven or Gould or whatever your foundation stock is . JMHO !
