Excellent Food aboard here every day, was here for Christmas before, and it was even better! The Crew celebrate their Christmas on Christmas Eve, then, they put on a spread for us foreigners on Christmas Day. I'd quite happily plod along, and I do, but when you start getting everyone elses doom and gloom, it's catching! Never bothered me in the slightest before, but now there are little me's running about, and at a stage where they can give me a hard time about going away, it's getting harder. BUT, Working on a radical change there, and like I say, at least I'm not lying in a hospital or even working in one would be bad enough, some of the things these people have to deal with. Like, I'm out here off the West coast of Africa, bobbing about on a boat, Not ideal, but at least I'm not dodging bullets, or lying in a Hospital bed, or out there scraping folk off the roads who have been in accidents. Are any of you involved in the catering trade, where you have to work through your Christmas? Are any of you in the Emergency services? Any nurses amongst you? etc, etc. When I was little, I grew up on a farm, and the cows needed feeding every day, so I've always been aware that not everyone gets to sit about with their families, eating and drinking to excess. Just wondering. Merry Christmas to you All, where ever you are, and whatever you are doing. I do a Monday to Friday job these days with a Christmas shut-down, but when I worked as a carer I usually worked Christmas day & boxing day , then new years day , folks still have to be cared for & I wasn't fussed about working the days because it was double time Merry Christmas fair play, good on ya ! Was going to be just me, the wife, the kids and the mother in law but we've invited my mum round because she always used to go to my nans and my nan passed away earlier on this year. With my mum comes my two sisters and my niece. My mum isn't with my stepdad any more as such but they're still really close and I consider him my dad so he'll be coming too. My youngest brother was supposed to be spending Christmas Day with his in laws but that seems to have gone tits up so he's coming too. That just left my other brother, his other half and his step daughter.. Didn't feel right not inviting them and everyone else so I invited them too! Not sure if they're coming yet though.. Huge capon chicken for dinner, all the crap that goes with it, and I mean all of it! Pavlova and trifle for pudding. Really looking forward to it! Quote Link to post Share on other sites
THE STIFFMEISTER 17,400 Posted December 17, 2013 Report Share Posted December 17, 2013 Couple of years ago I spent NYE in a Sanger on the midnight stag in afghan, I was stood staring into the darkness periodically doing checks through the n v gs etc when a radio message squelched through...as the clocks hit midnight, we launched shimoloes simultaneously into the night across the c p line, In a land of very little artificial light, you could see for miles and miles as lads did exactly the same in a Mexican wave type effect, earlier that tour we had been brassed up whilst we waded across a river on Xmas morning so it was quite an alternate Xmas A friend of mine and me, pre young family and fiancée days had a nye lamping tradition where we would venture out and lamp until midnight, stop for a smoke as we watched the fireworks soundlessly before cracking on, it was always a race to catch the first r/h/d of that year between us. 4 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

We were going for various reasons it fell through... At least I can go out hunting over Christmas..... I'm not jealous...... Honestly lol dominican republic last time I was there was in jail for 2 and a half days lol you g girl in the jail 11 year old chained to the wall with her ankles . Was in a kangaroo court, fined 7and a half us dollers plus they took me and my friend down to the bank and cleaned is oot long story but all in all maybe about 9 grand in total moral of the story don't buy anything of the locals they'll set you up its the dearest g iv bought Got to be honest Jim I didn't fancy the Dominican, I'm not one for being stuck in a hotel... Also they couldn't guarantee we'd have one room so it may have meant me and the wife in different rooms with a the kids split between us, it was too much money to feel pissed off once we were there. Spent the milenium on a hillside in Kosovo in an over watch position freezing my balls off lol ... I remember one Christmas Day patrolling near the border in Northern Ireland in a place called Middletown .... Normally the locals hated our guts and they used let us know daily ... As we patrolled covered in snow and freezing cold they offered us drinks wished us a merry Christmas ... Feck me almost invited us in a for bit of dinner lol ...
