Only have the one book. "My Way With Trout"....by Arthur Cove. It was recommended on the Fly Fishing Forum. I enjoyed it and there are usually a few for sale on ebay.

If I was limited to one book on trout fishing it would be this one. Brilliant book and his methods really work.

I don't know how to organise it but a THL comp for charity would be a great day out, we could do it somewhere central, preferably a river.. Like I say no idea how to organise it but with a bit if thought could be great.. Don't matter about winning or catching just a day out and a laugh and winnings go to the chosen charity, ???

..............From little Acorns.

Tried finding a book I bought about 88/89

It was the top ten fish ,each chapter was written by a well known angler.only a small hard back book.

Would love to read it again..lent it to a scag head who no doubt sold it.

Was it a black book with white/silver writing on the front called 'Top Ten'??

For me i loved Redmire by k Clifford........ A true great, historical read. I couldn't put it down.....Fishing today has been ruined by the carp waters, and it's never going to be able to rewind the clock back. I remember the amount of lads on the river matches, not dozens, but hundreds. Everyone was mad keen for june 16th, everyone geared up for 'the big push'. Exciting times. Everyone buzzing, making plans and dreaming of the coming months. the local tackle shop opened on a sunday morning for two hours, doing a roaring trade.

the local canal and ponds all had characters and the local ponds were seeped in folk law, making such a place pure magic for a boys brain,. I remember the match being cancelled as the river was tanking through so we went to my local ponds and there wasn't a single pitch available anywhere! In the end i sort of made my own swim under the branches of a willow and managed to catch a 3lb tench, which, was a whopper for me.

Carp waters destroyed the magic, the mystery. where are all the young kids today? trying to winkle gudgeon out from under the locks, trying crazy baits like bumble bee's, slugs and fruit pastilles! dreaming of having decent tackle..... and line that wasn't forever tangling. And a closed face reel that actually worked. As a young man i bought a Diawa closed face from my mate and what a disaster that was. Harrier 123M i think it was called and the plastic pins were forever popping off. We'd not heard of shimano in those days, they just weren't around much on the fishing scene, not until much later when the baitrunners emerged and took over the world! Mitchell and ABU had the big names. My childhood fishing was a mixture of struggling, experimenting and pure magic and i just don't think it's there anymore for the young of today. I feel sorry for them, but I'm glad i lived through those times.

Now that is exactly how it was, and your 100% right the puddles dug all over the country and filled to the brim has ruined fishing ( or maybe just advanced it and made it more accessible, either way I hate them),

Even talking about old tackle, matches, characters etc gets me itching to fish... I couldn't sleep as a kid the night before, then the long walk to the canal in the dark to get there at first light, bream and tench bubbles everywhere, the smell of the dew everything seemed magical and it's still firmly imprinted in my memory nearly 30 years later lol...

We used to catch perch with worms on sea gear cause it was all we could find in the shed lol, when I first git a "proper" rod I thought I was going to empty the canal or river behind my house lol..

I still remember the first pond un fished, a completely overgrown thing that was I fished for years but was in the middle if some land we used to lamp, the woman who owned the land said it was no worries in fishing it but she was unsure what was in there, there was bream, ( at least 2 lol), and my first ever carp, I wondered what the fck is hooked as it flew off, it was only about 4lb but hat a fight, there was a big patch of reeds in the water that used to sway as the fish moved through them, towards my float alongside " come on you bugger bite" lol...

I was hooked properly, I loved it completely..... I'm unsure if your average carp puddle can stir you up so much???

That sounds like the book....will look on amazon

I think I paid a tenner for it......but that was years ago. So I don't even know if it's still available.......... Just had a look for my copy, but can't find it, probably rotted away somewhere with all my barbel gear!!!   like several other books have done in the past. I was gutted when I forget I'd left mega-Pike II in my tackle bag and the slugs tried their best to destroy it before I realised!

One thing I have noticed about modern-day fishing is that there's no Tommy Ruffe...where have they all gone??? :icon_eek:
