After my elderly father has had his border terriers stolen him and my mother are worried about leaving the house. Can any of you recommend a good gaurd breed or anyone that might have a litter ??

 

well if your dad getting on a bit, he wont really want a big powerful dog will he .? So why not get a collie size type dog from the pound, as long as it makes a noise thats all its got to do, and some collie type dogs are very good guards, some round the farms will+ do bite .

 

How's and old man going to give a collie enough exercise? It would be a huge responsibility, poor man probably wants to put his feet up at times...not that some older people aren't very active it's just not that likely. They are deffo good guard dogs though I wouldn't deny that.

 

Any dog would do the job, no need to get paranoid and over the top. Just get any dog from a rescue and reward it for barking when a stranger comes to the door...

yeh mate, thats what i meant with the collie thing, meaning somting about 20-23in collie size, and like you say any dog from the pound.there are plenty of colliexs (none lurcher) there ,and anything with bit of collie or terrier in the mix will guard and let you know sombody about. You right full collie more so farm bred would be prob to full on for the old fella

I think you have had a couple of decent bits of advice on this thread matey, depending on your FIL state of health and fitness, it may be better to invest in extra security measures like lighting, cameras and maybe an alarm system ( all of which would probably cost the same as a decent pup)

 

They will still be vulnerable until a pup is of age ( 18 months +) and I am sure you know enough about different breeds to make an informed decision if you really did want to get a dog..

Thanks lads my brothers and me are sorting his place out with more security . It's just he's been depressed about losing his dogs and a bit unsure about getting a gaurd dog ,but since we've been discussing about getting him one he seems to be coming around to the idea and perked up a lot more . Which my brothers and me are pleased about!!

there's no point in getting a dog just to yap since they've already stolen a terrier which i'm assuming won't have gone quietly.

 

if you're going to get a dog that will bite make sure it's trained properly by someone who knows what to do.
