coats for running dogs

Recommended Posts

Yesterday Paul, it was absolutely freezing, 30++ mph winds, with driving sleet/rain. Dogs would not choose to go out in that kind of weather let alone humans, but sometimes you have to, it might be the only time you can get them out that day. A coat for those times would be ideal. Dogs would stay dry and be dry for getting back into the kennels. What is wrong with using a coat in those circumstances, certainly wouldn't make your dog 'soft' Or is it because some humans don't want to look soft themselves :whistling:

Just a headscarf fer me

If just road walking a dog on the lead then why not use a coat. Dogs keep warm running about, but at walking speed if the weather is bad then there's nothing wrong with using a coat on a thin skinned,

These are my fave's.........this winters must have.

nothing to do with looking this that or the other, as i said lurchers are working dogs and in my mind a good coat is as high a requirement as good feet anything less is a fault and should looked to be rectified in any future breeding. as i said poor coated dogs like whippits and greyhounds will benifit from a coat

I work on the basis that, if i was coming out of a centrally heated house, (and mine do, they all live in) i'd feel the cold, so i put a coat on, when i reach the place i want to run the dogs, the dogs get a ten minute run around, then the coats come off, because by then their normally panting and don't need them anymore, shit side of it is, :whistling: i get to carry the buggers for the rest of the mooch  mags the deerhound x doesn't wear one, unless it's road work on a very cold & wet day.

I've never had a dog cramp up yet, so if it works for you and your dogs carry on. but i'd like to ask,!!!............. how many of you guys that go out lamping, do it without a coat on??? :whistling:

Dogs keep warm running about, but at walking speed if the weather is bad then there's nothing wrong with using a coat on a thin skinned, short coated dog, especially if its raining. Cold muscles don't exercise as well as warm muscles and what's the point of letting a dog get chilled and wet.

true, i dont use coats , Bryn got great coat, Tod as thin coat. When been out just good rub down both , but more on Tod , then put on heat lamps Brill. Dogs will drop body weight when cold, so a warm dog will and that bit of weight all helps on a cold night.

big differnce in coats .!!

blue comes everwhere with me, fishing, mooching, walking, collecting wild food/wood, even go lamping sometimes, lol. so for me a coat is a must, do lots of pike fishing thru winter especially and without a coat he just gets shivery and miserable. my old retriever never needed one, rain snow or anything, but not all lurchers have big thick coats, perhaps the type you like/keep does, but not all do and as such coats are nessecary for a lot, unless you just keep them kenneled or inside all the time unless they out walking or working but to me a lurcher is a companion for most of my activities, and the opportunity of a chase oftne arises when out fishing etc.

day my dogs need a coat will be the day they recieve a shoval round the head.

Cor mister! You sound really tough! I just wanted to ask, should I bother giving my dogs water because there's loads of puddles about at the moment? I'm going to grab a shovel on the way home................just in case my dog starts to show any signs of the cold when we're out in the snow. I can use the shovel to bury him after.

Thanks for the advice, you are a true geezer.
