I've got ferret kits available in durham but they are only 9 weeks old
-
I feed mine a mixture of game (basically what I get through the season, they get liver and kidney etc mixed in, they love Mackrell every now and then and a n egg once a week. I do have a hob ferret who won't touch meat at all, the only thing he ever eats is dry food (alpha ferret)I am assuming that he was fed on this for the first year before I got him and now he seems stuck on it..... Strangely enough he is my best worker but won't eat rabbit so don't know how that works lol.

I also use frozen bottles in the hutch.my garden is south facing so i get the sun all day. I put a few bricks on the roof and and then put some ply over the top creating an air gap, keeps the sun off the roof and keeps the hutch nice and cool.

I must be lucky, no young at all on my perm, no females in season and no pregnancies at all thankfully but I am up north.

Beware Attempted Ferret Theft/release Lat Night 28/12
bowburnbandit replied to mrstinker's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
We had the same thing earlier in the year,my neighbour 2 doors along had both of his ferrets let out, they came back after a couple of days,I checked my cage 2weeks later early hours of the morning to find my cage open but thankfully ferrets still there, then my pals again a couple of weeks after that and he only got one back. I have combination locks on all the doors to my hutches now... It seems it's far too common occurrence all over, it's crazy when people have got nowt better to do than go about causing trouble for no good reason.best of luck to all and keep your ferrets safe guys -
I dunno what the deal is, when I was a kid and got stung it hurt for half an hour or so at best, now after a session with the ferrets my hands are tingling for a couple of days I am either getting soft in my old age or the sods are getting worse. We haven't had a decent frost really so they are everywhere

This is crazy, our thoughts are with you and we hope he has a speedy recovery. It's good to see he has not been put off the rabbiting game, if he hasn't got anyone to go with him and would like some company just as a deterrent tell him to drop me a message. All the best Joel

Raising Rio Part 10: Rio's First Brown Rat Hunt

Awesome video as always, congratulations on the newest member of your family, you don't know what you've got yourself in for:-) All the best -
You need to spend a little more time with her mate, seems like your doing it just long enough to be an annoyance for her. Try spending 1/2 an hour to an hour a day for a few weeks, you may need.to put her down for 5 mins to chill out every now and again but she will eventually learn to trust you. try feeding her snippets of meat while holding her, Handling needs to be enjoyable for her. Once you get the handling sorted get her out and drop her in a couple of two or three holers she will get the scent and sharp pick up what she is supposed to do. As others have said, a good feed before handling

Shame to see a good old grafter go, it's nice to see he was more than just a worker to you,you obviously had a good bond with him. All the best pal

Anyone in the county durham area got a small hob preferably not from this year's young they would be willing to part with. I appreciate that it's not the right time to be asking with the season just starting but I thought I would ask. I currently have 2 small jills, 2 large hobs and 7 kits, all the kits and one hob will be gone next week so I fancy a good small hob,not bothered about colour but I would like to run him over this season before I breed next year to ensure he works well. The hob I was going to breed mine to is really big and still growing and I personally prefer a smaller ferret s

Things I would recommend - good pair of gloves and maybe something to clear around holes. As said spare batteries for your locator and collar, good spade, few spare pegs. A way to carry your quarry.my only real tip is to be as quiet as possible when approaching and netting a set, and when the ferret is in the set try to stay out of line of site of the holes as sometimes rabbits won't bolt and they will just keep running around the set It's all common sense really, watch a couple of tutorials or ask someone to show you how to set the nets. Trial and error really, after your first couple of vis

Gutted for you mate, he got the chance, went to the vets it's more than some people would have given him, fair play to you All the best Joel

I started making my own nets about 5 years ago, unfortunately started with nylon but swiftly moved to spun poly. Been making a combo of red and some luminous green/yellow ones must say when I reach for a net I tend to go for the brighter ones. Something satisfying about catching bunnies in my own nets, I sit and make them while watching the TV so it's not so monotonous

There's been a few posts recently about kits disappearing at 4 or 5 weeks. You would think if they had been taken they would have had the lot. Gutted pal

I have a mk3 at the moment, currently up for sale as I got the chance of a mk1 15 foot with nets for £120 so its back to mk1 for me, I was never fond of the mk3, worked well enough but not for me

I have a dog, 4 adult ferrets 5 kits and 12 quail along with a full time job. My dog is walked first thing on a morning and then again on a night, my ferrets are cleaned out on a morning and on a night they are left ferret biscuits on a morning and meat on a night and funny enough I manage to get to work and spend a bit of time with the wife.all my animals are.fed and cleaned out before I feed myself before or after work. There are stacks of blokes on here who will do the same, stacks of blokes who have enough land that they can keep their animals fed year round. I don't see why it's so hard to

I am lucky I have 2 large chest freezers in my out house and 2 at my folks in their garage keeps enough fish, rabbit, pheasant and pigeon to feed my family and my ferrets, well has so far but added 2 hobs to my collection so will see how I get on next year

sorry double posted

My ferrets get both, tend to leave dry food in all day every day, proper ferret food not cat biscuits and feed them the raw meat at night time can be a bit of a pain searching the nests for stored food like.it took me a while to get them over to raw food and ferret biscuits as the first few weeks they would only go for cat meat and biscuits. I know plenty of blokes who fed there ferrets on cat biscuits only for there whole life and they lived to a ripe old age with no problems and grafted well. As long as you feed a good quality high protein ferret food i cant see the problem

Well in the end o used frozen bottles of water wrapped in a tea towel and pit bricks on the hutch top and covered with ply. Seemed to do the trick. I was gunna put a tray of water in hutch but was unsure as the kits haven got there eyes open properly.

Cheers for the reply guys, yeah I was planning on putting the frozen bottles in a couple of pillow cases or tea towels, I don't want the kits or mum to get freeze burn. I have a really big reflective space blanket, I wondered if I tied it up in front of the hutch a foot or so away if it would provide a little relief by reflecting the sun away but at the same time to would hate it to work the other way. Also thought of using a white cotton bed sheet to cover the whole hutch and reflect the sun away from the dark wood.

OK guys and girls, it's going to be a scorcher tomorrow so I was planning on freezing some bottles of water to put in the nest box with the kits. It's a big nest box so won't get in the way, I was just thinking it will keep the nest from getting to hot as they seemed to struggle today. I doused them with water every 45 mins or so today as they were getting too hot. I am out all day tomorrow so what do you think? Anyone any better ideas? Cheers Joel

The wife named my ferrets, I can't remember what like. I call them number 1 and number 2 in order of how good they work lol

I started with a jill and about 10 nets, I picked a hutch up that was knackered and ended up tarting it up, all in for about 15 quid I think. As said I think it's good to help the younger generation get into ferreting and help them out with a bit of gear bit more importantly the knowledge. I don't think I would give gear to a youngster I didn't know unless I had taken them out a few times to make sure they were genuinely interested but there aren't many people who would take strangers onto their land and show them the ropes like an old timer did for me and understandably so. Hard to tell who i
