I handled mine after 5 days and my Jill was fine, I have had them out every day since.I wasn't sure about handling them as I've never had kits before but I was picking them up and giving them to the Jill to take back into the nest ( no idea if it was a good idea but made sense in my head). As rabbit demon says just keep an eye on your Jill and play it by ear. Best of luck

Raising Rio Part 4 A Medical Emergency
bowburnbandit replied to Minkenry's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
You must have been so anxious, having lost your last few mink not knowing if she would make it. It's a good job she is a fighter, all the best mate joel -
Well I have 3 jills that are going to be white, one Jill and one hob that look either dark silver or could be polecat colour but not sure yet. They are 2 weeks old tomorrow and today I found 3 of 5 out of the nest, not sure if this is normal?
-
Congrats buddy, hope all goes well for you, my Jill came out to see me after she gave birth last week, picked her up and stroked her and that's when I realised she had them, never tried to nip me or anything she just greeted me like normal. Anyway best of luck joel

Looking good so far

Well even though she was fairly big I have ended up with 5 kits, not going to touch them for the first week but I am happy with 5.
-
No not yet mate I put her in for 24 hours then took her out for two day then put her back in for 24 hours so the dates where the 25th or the 30th so next few days hopefully matelooking forward to seeing pics when it all happens guys, 1 of my jills had a phantom and the other dropped her kits this afternoon. Haven't looked to see how many yet I will give her a day or 2 to settle
-
Cheers bud, she was pretty big so I am expecting big numbers
-
Well I have just popped out to feed up and when my Jill came out to greet me she was half the size, I listened close to the cage and there are lots of little squeeks coming from the nest box. I think she may still have a couple more in her so left her to get on with it. I had her out earlier today playing in the garden and she was jumping round like an idiot with her sister So thought she was having a phantom pregnancy but there you go. Will post some pics up in a day or so once she is settled.

hi, do you mind if i am cheeky and ask what vet you use? i am from county durham and use abbey vets near the durham johnston school for the mutt but they are always painfull, never had a trip that cost me less than 50 bar even for checkups and stuff. wanted to take the ferrets elsewherecheers joel It's Darlington vet clinic mate the price I got was a favour returned think it's £40 per hob which is still cheap Cheers bud I will check them out, it's got to be cheaper than abbey vets

Cheers mate hope every thing goes well for you mate, he's a great little ferret but he just switches now and again for no reason but saying that when I got him I couldn't even hold him without him trying to bite me, I don't think the guy who I got him of even tried to handle him. cheers bud, yeah i had a polecat jill like that a couple of years back, it was weird as i could hand feed her and she would be gentle, you could pick her up no bother when she was in her hutch or on the ground, she would turn a little but wouldn't nip. Put her near a rabbit hole and she would work her little socks

lovely looking polecat hob that mate, i have two polecat jills both were put to hobs this season a big polecat hob and a large white hob with black eyes, both jills and hobs cracking workers although the hobs aren't mine. my jills should be due back end of next week if all has gone well. hope all goes well for you buddy and look forward to the updates

Cheers for the replies guys, thankfully I have a freezer full of different game, the girls had duck last night. Cheers for the advice on the mesh bobcullen. I have another enclosure that u am going to use for the hob, will source some better stuff. Do you have any recommendations for what to Use? Onemanandhisdog I hope your kits come safely, best of luck with them I look forward to hearing how it's all going Cheers Joel

it was different but i enjoyed it. the wife has been going mad for ages about the amount of unidentified meat in the freezer so thats how i ended up with the combo. hare is a really love hate thing but i think thats a lot about how it is cooked in the first place, i always find people seem to kill game by cooking it way too long. i bleed the hare as soon as i kill it, makes it taste much better in my opinion then as i said pan fried fairly hot and fairly fast, salt pepper and garlic. below are the first lobsters out of the batch... we ate them on the campsite, couldn't wait until we got home

I am new to the forum and just thought i would put a couple of pictures of my two jills up. Hopefully will have some kits arriving in three weeks but it remains to be seen as it will be a first litter for both. If not i will be looking for a Hob polecat kit if possible around the county Durham area preferably from working stock cheers joel

A clear out of the freezer revealed some lobster i caught back end of last year and a couple of hare loins. Tea tonight lobster carbonara with pan fried loin of hare. It was awesome, just thought i would share

Well I guess I had better get eating them then, I've thrown a few back at the reservoir. An old timer told me years ago not to bother eating brownies as they tasted like mud so I never did. Been on this site a couple of days and learned something new, cheers guys
-
i have never eaten brown trout before, love rainbow trout is it similar. ive been doing a fair bit of reservoir fishing lately at derwent for stocked rainbow as my last year fishing the rivers around Durham was a bit poor, just plagued by small brownies, barbell and the odd chub.
-
thank you for the warm welcome guys, i look forward to learning as much as i can from you more experienced folk and hope that i am able to help out anyone as and where i can cheers joel

hi, my name is Joel and i am from county Durham, I am into ferreting, rough shooting with PCP air rifle and occasionally with a 12g with my pal who is a sgc holder on his permission. My current permissions are around the stanhope area but i would love to get some a bit closer to home cheers joel
