Fencing Training And Pointer Lurcher Update.
straight2hand replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Cats and coons have some similarities and some differences too. Cats have the advantage of needle sharp claws, which can catch some dogs off guard, causing them to weaken. But that's where the cat's advantage ends. Raccoons have comparatively dull claws, but they use them to the best of their ability, and ball up on a dog's face similar to how a cat sometimes does, but with much more physical power to do so. Coons can bite much harder than a cat, and they tend to lock their bite onto the dog when they bite, often continuing to hang on and attack the dog even after the dog has quit and -
Fencing Training And Pointer Lurcher Update.
straight2hand replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My bitch has never landed funny after a jump, occasionally the danger can be catching the top layer of wire, but my bitch normally springs from the top of the barb. Personally I get nervous if my bitch goes through at pace if there is no sheep wire underneath. I would say jumping is safer but because dogs are driven creature they can lose a little bit of self preservation at times! Normally a sensible dog will adjust if it gets caught out ones or twice. Would love to see my bitch on a racoon one day ATBS2H -
A great start is to put something in front of there food make some sort of barricade. I put a piece of wood blocking access to the kennel so every time she went in and out she had to jump every day nothing too high, I made it higher over time as she got older. Lurchers are natural jumpers; but I started her young, try a fence without barb or even a style as your dog is more developed. I am sure your dog will naturally progress to jumping barb as my bitch did it on her own - like people have mentioned just build confidence up from there..

What Adds More Drive Into A Lurcher Beddy Or Collie?
straight2hand replied to springfield's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
always turns into bull vs collie some how? It is all about the right blend at the end of the day; guts and guile are both needed in an all round working dog and thats besides the point it must be very fast!!! I suppose in the end were all after an Einstein terrier x and a collie with a massive set of bollox -
Happily lounge around but always have that look saying......... I rather be working.

looks like it got goosed..... silly fecker thought it could take on a dog, deserved to die. What did the rest of the flock do after that?
-
Well said, plenty of dogs will kill....but Lurcher men are in the world of percentages %%%!!! If we invest time in a dog it must have the highest chance of success! There are plenty of stories about the rescue or the show pony that turn out ok but..how many of that litter did the same??

To be honest I think, I like the look of these crosses as opposed to the bull/grey - they seem to lend to each other.

The Cluson Saved My Dads Life!!!

+2 , was thinking the same, how old his your dad, ive had few bangs/bumps you do as you get older, you dont bounce as well lol , He has a medal in life guarding when he was younger- can swim like a fish. He slipped through the rails and smashed his head on the way down f**k knows what on but hit his head pretty hard and mangled his ear, I presume he was out cold when he hit the river, when I pulled him out it took about 10-15 mins to bring him around, I think he's 56 now and had a bit of ticker trouble in the last couple of years, to be fair he did well to get on his feet, climb a fen -
The Cluson Saved My Dads Life!!!
straight2hand replied to straight2hand's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thanks lads was scary sh!t for real! I used to think I went over the top with first aid kits, extra lights, poncho's etc and gradually took things for granted and stopped taking stuff out with me, something like that makes you realize when your out your in the middle of no where, I mean my dad started lurchers as a teenager some 40 years ago and never had anything close to this, its normal for us guys to be miles away with out a care in the world and 9 times out of 10 the worse thing is a rolled ankle but in the future - best to prepare for the worst!! Some of my non-dog mates were asking -

not a sausage poor dog though we where lamping as we where hobbling back to the car bless her. lol -
Took a walk out on the beam last week, Superb lamping weather - plenty of wind, Nice and dark, The fields where a little saturated from the day time rainfall but we were still were rubbing our hands together at the prospect of a big bag. So it was just me and dad over a bit of land a few miles from my place, I had walked here in the day time a few days prior. Scanned the first few fields but... alas nothing of note apart from a fox on his bike very quickly into the darkness. We came to the old steam rail track and paused to decide which way to go, After a brief chat it was over the rail tr

I looked at that thread cuz I had never seen it before. I can assure all of you there are plenty of culls being bred over here. I look at some of the shit people keep and I just shake my head. Lil snipey nosed weedy bitches being bred to skinny scrawny pencil necked shit eaters. Before anybody gets all crazy and goes to importing dogs please make sure you know who you are getting the dogs from. There are coyote dogs and then there are COYOTE DOGS! Can't see why any right minded person would import a coyote dog from the states when I'm more than certain the uk has a lot more capable mutts to

nothing wrong with a deerhound greyhound bitch story to be fair looking for a bitch to breed out of pal. So you're not wanting to work it, just breed from it? What will happen to the bitch afterwards? Maybe, but there are plenty of fellows in the lurcher game who have used the dh/gh in lurcher lines for years taking all british game? why would it be that the yank lines where better than the uk? not exact what the yank laws are but not sure if they can even hunt deer with dogs anyway? and we don't have coyotes here if we did we would have dogs capable of killing them, same as ev

I have seen those coyote greyhounds on here I think someone posted a video with an old boy on in who kept them. To be honest there is plenty of good British stock around - just a case of finding the right ones. ATB S2HI guess some would say white tail deer but you aren't gonna find a handful of dogs that could take one regularly and that is illegal so not being bred for.legality aside, what makes them so hard to catch that only a handful of dogs can get them regularly?Speed and the ground they live on is wide open and rough as can be. Its just real tough to catch em is all. I'm not sayin all a

Whether we like it or not the BBC are against us in a massive way and so are all media really.I genuinely do believe that if a farmer did approach some of these lads that they would do some of the things mentioned in the report though because with a lot of matching there is money involved and it seems to of become a trend to drive to the fens to run your dog - i do feel sorry for the lurchermen who have always lived there. I am not taring the coursing community with the same brush by any means but the average lurcher man who took the odd hare is not the problem here. What doesn't help are the
