Never heard of gamefowl hooded or shackled. On a tether pegged out.If they were in cock boxes why in shackels? We keep dogs in kennels but wouldn't put up wi man biters. Gamefowl are no different. atb.
-
Was it a gamecock mate? Once they start getting manny they tend to get worse. gamefowl being faster and more gutsy than other stuff can be a pain in the arse.Got caught on the temple off one once feck it hurt. Neck it more so if you got stags off him. If you have to handle him regular you will soon get sick! atb

The old time warreners dogs would have been a far cry of a modern day lurcher mate. More like collie heavy collie x's I would think. The dog's wouldn't have worked like we know it. No lamping little coursing. They would have done lot of net work etc. But no 30's n 40's a night.Bet the poor feckers had a hard life though. They wouldn't have been the performance dogs we keep today. 1st class diet then would be mediocre diet today be it dog, horse or fowl. Look at old keeps for dogs n fowl and that tells the tale. atb.

He's covered two litter sisters buddy and that's all,no one wants to use him haha, ugly as sin and crap being two of the reasons I think Ugly aint the word mate it's called workman like. That's my idea of a lurcher. He would be the type of dog that was written of years ago before the" lurcher" was a household name. Sure a crank called Plummer was looking all over the shop for a dog like that !. Nice animal credit to you. Bet in summer with a bit weight on him n not as fit looks more collie like than a collie lol atb.

Would have to disagree there mate, I know the bull that's in my we line an it has served me an others fine for 13/14 years atvb I did say some mate. I know theirs lads out there who know and care about the right stuff. Good on yourself and others like you. On the other side of the coin theirs a big % of knackers. These clowns didn't and don't now help our sport. You know the type I mean. Macho dreamers thinking a scar like a medal and my dogs got a head like a bucket . pricks. Seen a kid biking a dog last July dog not far off heatstroke getting it fit!July ! Right nice dog owned by knacke

Regarding bull x's. When you look at what the bull side of the cross is bred for and what is expected of a goodun then killing a fox should be relatively easy in theory. Yet in practise many don't make the grade as in all lurcher breeding. How many time's have you heard about jackers and how many of the macho lot double n even treble their dogs up on fox. Pre ban good single handed fox dogs wernt as common as what some think.Plenty of dogs would muck in in company but on their own different story. And yes some of them collie X's belter's. Ask some of the macho lot today what line of bull blood

Not so sure about that mate i recently helped the son of an old pal of mine get himself set up and he reckons theres quite a few youngsters involved, apparently one of the top racers down these parts is only in his 20,s.......i thought it was an old mans game but apparently not. That's great to hear mate and long may it continue. Up here their is a few youngsters but compared to years gone by the sport is a shadow of what it was. Im not a flyer but have always been about pigeon men . I think the only thing that stopped me getting in was the dogs. You got to be dedicated to the pigeon job a

Sounds like your grandad was typical old school J.D. When I was a kid every street of terraces had it's yards with little lofts, hutches and the like. Horses were still being used by scrap and coalmen, tetherd and stabled any where you could fit them. Up to early 80's the whippet racing clubs were doing well,as were pigeon racing clubs. Everything move's on and time's change. Those old timers would not recognize pigeon racing.running dogs and the price that some of them cob's fetch. Anyway back to subject! pigeon v whippet anyone no out about it?
-
Were they milers J.D.?Pigeon racing still very strong in many parts of UK the North being a stronghold.Alot more high-tech now and harder for working men to pursue. A lot of pigeon lads kept running dogs ,terriers, gamefowl etc. Harder to keep a bit of livestock now than ever due to council redtape and a changing society.Pigeon racing is still going good but totally different ball game to your grandad's day as you will know J.D. .Also aint many youngsters getting involved.

Great little vid that Hareydave cheers. Hope them Barnsley boys keep it going great bit of culture and tradition. The old man I spoke to 30 year since told me they raced them over Newcastle town moor. Never heard of them up Northeast in my time being kept or raced. So does anyone know of how they raced them against whippets. Sure I seen article about Dave Sleight racing pigeon against a greyhound at a dog track.Think he is from South Yorkshire ? Cheers boys keep info coming very interesting yet sad its a dying sport. atb.
-
Tuzo are the milers like high flyers in looks n size ? Also does anyone know of the whippet v pigeon races? Like to know how they were trained and what parts of the country it took place in etc.
-
Wonder if there's any left in UK. Back in 80's talked to a few old time pigeon men and was told of short sprint race's of a mile or two, No clocks birds out of baskets n 1st home. One old fella spoke of the bird flying low so low gates between hedges were opened by young lads for them. He said some pretty big bets placed on these races. This man was 90 then so was going back some. Another bloke had a stuffed miler champion in a case from early 1900's.Also heard and mind reading about pigeons v whippet races. Pigeons flying basket to box. Can vaguely mind Dave Sleight recreate this with a greyh

Terry Nuttkiins the bloke with that dodgy hair style off Animal Magic and suchlike lost two fingers to his pet otter.Reckons he had smell of another otter on his wool jumper. He deserved that I reckon just for that hair. Think he's dead now.(not killed by otter)
-
This bloke thinks he's in the Philippines or States! Cracking set up and birds in top fettle atb and good luck.
-
Have never ever seen a terrier work an otter.Been told however that when fresh bolt fairly easy. When hunted and run in however or in a situation where they can't bolt , different ball game. Know of 2 dogs one a keepers one farm terrier but both on hard side. Both of these were wrecked by otter. Reading old accounts of terriers working them they certainly don't sound a push over. Hard dogs never being desirable. Sounders with a brain being desired. Next time you find a road killed otter just look how they are put together . Pure muscle, razor teeth and strong head. Seen dead dog otter 20 odd

One ruthless predator alright think water stoat! In the big picture animal for animal bet they do more damage to stock and wildlife than a fox. On nature reserves they must kill bitterns, waterrails and a lot more. They found pads on Farne Islands 3 year back in tern colony. Pal had caught mink cage trap and otter mangled trap and mink to bits. Mink numbers have decreased since otters have increased. Would love to see them hunted with hounds and even dig one but would take no satisfaction killing one. That said they need taking in hand just for the good of other wildlife not to mention fishery

Some work in them boxes mate. Enough graft making them but the graft in painting them to that standard you can't comprehend! If the man who painted them charged 200 a box he weren't out of order.A good churn would be more than that. And a set of 4 be on antique road show in 100 yr time lol. Do same job wi a coat of varnish on mind but nice things to own.Hope your careful with them mate.Cracking set up too. Atb with your birds.
-
Nice job them mate.If you don't mind me asking who painted them he's definetly a wagon painting man.
-
I hope I'm wrong ,but in 50yr their will be be no small time stock keepers left.Even when you own property n land you are so restricted. Cocks crowing, pigeons shiting etc etc. They build houses right next to stables, farms ,allotments then the new owners complain about noise ,smell n vermin. Try building a stable or pigeon loft in a garden these days and council on you like a shot. When I was young'un tumblers ,rollers, in the back yards. Horses tetherd n stabled all over.Allottments a sea of multi coloured racing lofts. It's hard now to keep anything that breathes other than some waste of

Really. Can't remember last time I seen any schools with whippet racing club ,gamefowl club, trotting stables, lurcher club, terrier club ,pigeon loft, or out else in that catorgory. The old fogey are going to be over the moon wi a dozen game birds crowing their hearts out all day aint they. And who wants their kids round the church wi the vicar"s trying to nonce them while trying to sort the horse on a dark winters night. Sorry luv but you aint been round northeast livestock scene much have you.
-
That's whats wrong with this country now. You are so restricted in all respects regarding livestock. No pigeon lofts, kennels, stables, chicken runs nowt. Feel sorry for all the young'uns wanting to start off. Council assume everyone wants football and softplay and all that shit. All our culture and tradition being lost. Rant over!
