  1. I agree. That's what I do; fix a price and guarantee to leave domestic jobs mole free no matter how long it takes. If I think there are still moles to catch after my three planned visits I'll leave a few Putanges under grass clods to mop up the stragglers and check them weekly or whenever I'm passing. For farms it is a fixed fee and they trust me to take as many out as I possibly can in the three scheduled visits. We all know where we stand that way.
  2. Nice shots For the last two or three weeks I've been trying to get a hen harrier on film. I often see them while out on mole patrol but by the time I've stopped the van, got the camera out the bl00dy things are miles away. The migrating ones don't hang about so I'm hoping that now the residents are here they might be more localised and easier to intercept.
  3. The only tweak I do with Talpex is to file off the burr on the trigger plate and use emery cloth to smooth the end of the latching wire. All mass produced traps have burrs where the wires have been cut and around any holes that have been drilled. With Duffus traps they are all different. Some need half a mile cutting off the trigger latch to prevent excessive travel. I only use Flatpacks and the modern ones are not the same as the earlier ones. I squash the bodies in a vice to reduce the width from 73mm to around 65mm (the original Duffus was around 60mm). That puts more pressure on the re
  4. Interesting. You make four posts saying basically nothing. So, if you aren't willing to help the guy and you obviously don't need any advice yourself; why bother reading the forum let alone posting? Isn't a forum (look up the meaning) about sharing information? Well, your 'powers of observation', are 'impressive' !,....lol,....but, am i bothered ?,.....lol (im pretty sure, if the guys interested enough ?,... then he will learn, cause, theres plenty stuff, you can 'glean' from,... out there) Are you the 'official' 'self-appointed' spokesman, on here now ? ,...or what,....ha ha
  5. Not trying to surprise people just showing a few pics Something different to mole trapping tell you what I won't bother posting on this section then if it's not mole trapping there's no point Still missing Matt I gather Not being critical. Just making comment about how effective and easy to use these traps are at this time of year. The only surprise is that more people don't use them. I suppose that could be down to not knowing how easy they are to make these days. We used to make them on a wooden frame, but now with galvanised mesh being cut to size by many agricultural suppliers and

  7. I don't think that many people will be surprised that a Larsen Trap is successful at this time of year. Its what they were designed to do. All you need to do is add a call bird.
  8. Look on the bright side. At least they will win more matches next season.
  9. I don't want to set it to show you in case it breaks........................................ I thought these old traps were built to last?
  10. Catfish are virtually everywhere over here.
  11. errrrrrrrm....guessing this is in a pond??? Wash your mouth out! Pond indeed
  12. Had a shortish session this afternoon. My mole patrol took me out to the Charente valley and as I'd finished my jobs by 1:30 I headed for a swim I'd reccied a couple of months ago. As the forecast was for thunderstorms all afternoon I'd got the brolly to keep the dog dry.
  13. What about this for a long tailed, brown mole
  14. You can download an App from Android Market or Google Play that checks whether your phone or device has OTG compatibility. My old Samsung 5500 hasn't.
  15. Got one with the spade this morning. Cheeky blighter was chucking earth up a few yards from where I was setting a trap so I scooped him out with the small spade. Most indignant he was.
  16. Thought I had a special one today. Checked the traps in my garden after cutting the grass and saw a ginger body amongst the mud debris. Pulled it out and it was a vole, caught by the very tip of its nose. There was a mole in the other Putange too. Vole / Mole double. Best I can do for now.
  17. Just remember to lube the end before you insert it into any cavities
  18. My old mate used to send his cured pelts off to a small firm of milliners in London back in the 70's. They used them to make bowler hats and he reckoned paid good money especially for winter skins.
  19. I would have removed and destroyed the young before placing the traps. If you had trapped the adult coming to the nest the young would have starved to death so it would be more humane giving them a quick death and then dealing with the adults.
  20. Are you French by any chance? They can't seem to fish more than five metres from their vans I actually beat that last week. I ad my camper van parked 3 metres from my rods, watching them through the door from the reclining armchair, glass of wine to hand and the Truma heater on full chat In that pic you can see my wires goin into truck to sounder box clipped on rear view mirror! recline pasenger seat and job done, even got drinks holder for a couple beers!!! 5 mins to get fishing 3 mins to pack up. perfect for me at the minute. Can't fault you. Making the most of a short session t

  22. It is the same story with Flatpack Duffus traps. If anyone has the original version of their Ultimate Stainless Steel traps (the ones without the Flatpack website details stamped on them) they will know just how well made they were. In the last four years there seems to have been three or possibly four incarnations, each successive one less well made then the previous one. My mate brought some over last year and they were hardly better than the much cheaper Far Eastern traps available everywhere. I've got some four year old Talpex and some newer ones I bought last year. I'll have a rumma
  23. That's the one! Veniards still purchase dried mole skins - paying the handsome price of 20 pence each It costs you 55p to post it
  24. The village handyman who is employed by the community does the mole trapping for the sports field. He has a home made device fabricated out of those steel rods builders use to reinforce concrete. It has a couple of spikes to stand on, a sliding rod with a small hoop that sits on top of the flattened molehill. When the mole pushes up the molehill it lifts the rod which in turn releases a spring that fires a 12 gauge blank straight down at the mole. He offered to make me one to use on my paid jobs
