I don't have problems finding the traps. With the long term traps I put a piece of floorboard over the trap site, slightly recessed into the turf. Lawnmowers just go over the top without damage and I can find them easily. If its a short term job I spray the clod with orange paint.

Keep at it Smithie. I got about a dozen 18 months ago from a local farmers suppliers. I didn't know that they were stainless until a few months after I started to use them. By then the dealer had stopped selling them due to complaints from customers that they were too strong. I've been looking for some more ever since. I've now got a sample of 20 to try out and if they are OK I can order some more. I have a lot of Putanges out 24/7 permanently and the stainless ones don't need as much cleaning and tweaking when I check them. Saves me a bit of time so I'm hoping to be able to change all my

I knew that I'd get some really good advice from you pro's on here. I tried to discuss it with my wife but she just dismissed it as being a small thing.

I've been contacted to do some mole trapping for a hotel that specialises in naturism. My dilemma is whether I should insist on wearing my knee pads and gloves? What do you more experienced pro's suggest?
-
Yes, and no idea. Never had any dealings with metal detectors. Sorry.

I haven't got any left. If Norfolk Trapper can get them at the cheaper price he quoted previously then I'll leave him to it. At the minute I'm trying out a few stainless ones I've managed to source. If they turn out OK I'll be using them in future.

WOW!! That's great mate. What camera were you using?

I'm going to have to get my camera out. Problem is, I'll have to go back to work as I don't have seem to have as much free time since I retired Here's one from a few year's ago to be going on with....

Mole Catcher Jailed - A Blast From The Past
Nicepix replied to Mr Wasp's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
He is a disgrace to our profession. If he can't fight off a stewardess, a gay Italian flight attendant and a soldier he should be thrown out of the British Molecatchers Guild -
There's a big difference between Talpex types too Mine are all genuine Talpex except for one Flatpack that I got to try out. That is the only one with rust on the trigger plate.

Another mystery at the same location today. I'd still got five sets of Putanges out to mop up stragglers coming in from adjacent areas and I was checking the traps and replacing them with some stainless traps I've got to try out. The first set I checked, one had got a mole in but the trigger had gone. The line had broken level with where the mole's mouth was. Maybe it had bitten through the line as the trap shut on it? We'll never know.
-
It is to get them to activate the trigger as they go through. Moley doesn't like obstructions in his way so while he is preoccupied clearing the bump, he pushes up the trigger and should be just in the right place for a clean catch. Some trappers use little balls of mud, I prefer to squeeze a little ridge or 'speed bump' on the tunnel floor using my finger and thumb to cause an obstruction. Obviously I don't use them if the trap is put on its side. Then I use a 'Keep Right' sign.
-
Possibly. I haven't got the trap now to check it as it will be amongst the others and they all look the same. My thoughts were that the mole might have been travelling faster than normal. I can't remember whether I built a speed bump when I set it. I usually do, but don't always, especially if the trap is more sideways than upright. Or it could have been s stone or something that delayed the trap closing. If it happened again I would definitely check the spring.

They squabble over nothing Lol they like sunflower hearts here. They seem to dominate the feeders but the last few days they have taken to aerial combat amongst themselves too. They don't fly after other species, just other goldfinches. We've got a few bramblings coming in too. They arrived a couple of weeks ago and seem to like it here. Last year, about this time 2 hawfinches popped in for a day visit. Haven't seen them since though. Must get the camera out.
-
We had a few goldfinches when I fed sunflower seeds and fat balls. But since I put a millet feeder out we've been inundated with them. They've got really aggressive over the last day or so. A sure sign of the imminent breeding season.

Beautiful photos.

There are no rules in dog training. What works for one won't work for another. But I sure as Hell wouldn't wait until the pup was 10 months old before starting training. It would as others have said be made aware of what it can and can't get away with, and learned the basics of away, stop and recall. As for whistles; the only thing that matters is consistency. Same with any command.

To do that you really need a very wide aperture. Modern digital cameras aimed at amateur use aren't as good at shallow depth of fields as the old 35mm film cameras. Try taking a similar shot using 'Aperture Priority' mode, the widest aperture (that's the lowest number available), Spot Focus mode and then using a tripod or resting your elbows on a table take three shots. The first one normally. The second one just depress the shutter button partially to lock focus and then holding the button move the camera back about 3"before taking the photo. For the third shot do the same, but move back

I had a similar idea for inside a grain dryer that was riddled with rats. I put a barrel out with some peanut butter smeared around the rim of one side. At the other side I had a length of plastic drain pipe supported on a wire so that the centre of gravity was just back of centre. The back part rested on the barrel rim and there was a ladder for the rats to reach the open pipe. Once they ventured down the pipe past the tipping point they were tipped into the bucket and the pipe re-set itself. Like a see-saw in effect.

I think that your last point is the key to that. Bait can overcome the fear of a foreign object especially if it is of a high nutritional value. Fish become wary of certain baits when they have been overused, but they still fall to other similar baits even though the hook and line are still present in them. Anyway, strange day or not on Wednesday, it did the trick. Not a sign of a mole today.
-
Its the same reason why they dig under any type of trap - suspicion which can be a sign of poor trap setting or a trap-shy mole that has been chased around by an inexperienced trapper. I've found that when using Putanges I get less misses than when using Duffus type traps. I put this down to the triggers being easier to displace and that the mole is trapped before it gets to the disturbance caused by digging the trap hole.

What's The Difference Between A Dog And A Fox?

Looks like somebody has still got a pair of Wayfinders -
Sorry - wrong thread

Been to check the traps at a holiday home today. An old farmhouse in about three acres. I put a few out in the garden area on Monday, a mixture of Talpex and Putanges and expected 3 to 4 moles today. There were no signs of new diggings in the main communal feeding area, no traps had been disturbed except for a couple where voles had made their way in. First trap on the outside of this area had a mole in, caught by its arris in the Talpex. The trap had closed on its body behind its hips. Never seen one caught so far back. Then a Putange had a mole caught the wrong way around. Damned

I'm surprised that one of the pro's on here hasn't called for this thread to be locked or even deleted. Giving all this vital information out on a public forum isn't good for their business.
