Last Weekend Of Pheasants Leads To 2 New Permissions
foxbolter replied to leethedog's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
you won't get much terrier work through the season when there's a good keeper there with night vision and a field by is bungalow baited.you will maybe get couple of desperate vixens move in end of season looking for peace to bring up a litter -

a good keeper shouldn't need a terrier man with the technology of today. but we'll done and good luck -
exactly chilli but it does get to people because people think black and chocolate colour means Patterdale and they are pure but it is usually something else in the making a lot less back than they like to think
-
Daniel you say your dogs are always quiet in kennels what do you put this down to
-
my type of dog I like is one that finds bays within 6 inches when the quarry comes forward hold him there at all costs and keeps quarry bizzy enough that quarry can't turn around and be doing other things only fighting if needs to .when a dog works this way it will be successful more times and last longer than a complete fighter which some are referring to on this thread . why throw fuel on a fire when a fire is burning under control but if that's all you got well that's it . I will add to say the job will get done with a fighter more often than with a complete Bayer .

call them what you like Patterdale Russells lake lands they are all terriers and one thing that I will never do again from experience is ever judge a terrier from appearance after all when he's deep below doing what he was bred to do in a very good manner does anyone give too fucks if he's black or white I certainly don't and if one does you shouldn't be in the game. respect the dog not its colour
-
never ever trust a terrier
-
Great to see some common sense in 3 pages of otherwise nonsense.A dog unsteady around stock wouldn't be the dogs fault. Imo.
-
wasn't referring to your post fat man. I just get annoyed by people putting a dog at a low level by appearance. rippem if the pups parents were good enough to be bred from why would colour matter and if the white pup they produced was a good worker why not breed from parents again. it would be better than getting a pup from the unknown again stick with what you got if the working ability is good
-
if half on here woried about a terriers working ability and not colour and looks I think the working terrier would be in a better situation rippem if you end up with a white pup out of a litter you obviously haven't done your home work if white is not for you

Money can't bring you happiness but if you haven't got it you may become very unhappy. And always remember work to live never live to work.

A old chap told me on a hill once when I was a young boy always keep a terrier slightly over weight when working rocks because he might need it one cold long night after a good shift and a terrier can push through rocks but it's a little easier coming out carrying less weight

Many rock earth's can be dug just takes you a long time good test for a terrier in my opinion bar shovel and sledge hammer and away you go sometimes just getting there and just one big rock that you can't move without moving a thousand smaller ones. Most rock digs I have see last at least 3 or four hours and sometimes many more hours I don't think you can take anything away from a good dog that will stay till dug. Why would someone try and take that away from a honest little dog
-
It takes a brave but determined dog in my opinion to drop down a tight dark crack in the rocks and a fox is at a far more advantage in rocks than earth there are also different rock holes most I don't think have much room at all they look roomy with big borders outside but close to tight cracks inside foxes like to be in very tight spaces underground seen dogs come from rocks with balled sides many times
