Had this weekend photographing both Barn and Short Eared Owls - early starts paid off...
-
Yeah, looks like a MK1, it’s dedin not a mk2.
-
They’re a cracking lens and good combination with the 40d as it’s a crop sensor - beat to look on eBay for what money they selling for.
-
I only ever use L series lenses... 90% of the time I shoot in AV mode (aperture priority) but I control the ISO and F stop, if I’m looking to underexpose for backlighting I may shoot in manual but generally just use exposure compensation in AV mode for that type of shot...

Thank you very much Chaff, ISO 1600, F7.1 gave me 1/1000th sec and image is totally uncropped.
-
Barn Owl images from this morning, poor light but can’t complain..
-
Nah mate, way too many dog walkers around the same area and farmers own dogs too.
-
Yeah, might get the trailcam out and bait up for a few days see what’s visiting ?
-
I’d Ben keeping my wits about me if I come across that ?

Anyone help on ID of animal/bird ??? found 3 under the feeding station today, couple small bones amongst the 3, all dry as a bone and no smell, about size of my little finger. Was hoping it was a barn owl pellet as theres a pair on my permission but doubting myself.

Top ones a Nuthatch and lower one is a treecreeper ?

Superb pal, get a pop up hide set up about 10m away from where you putting bait out for em to get used to things, even better if you can pop a piece of drainpipe or the likes out of the hide to mimic a camera lens... Then, when you get them in regular give me an invite.... PLEASE....
-
Thanks Billy and Sam, much appreciated lads ?
-
Last 2 images a cracking pal... We see them in public carparks and supermarkets where they feed on the Rowan berries..
-
This guy is really good to watch and learn because he makes things quite simple to understand although he can be a bit quirky...

My apologies, I was getting you mixed up with Stavross who has just bought a new camera. F4 will give shallow depth of field - background all blurry and subject in focus so long as there’s distance between background and subject... F11 would give more depth of field - more background in focus with foreground/subject The lower the F number the more blurry The higher the F number the more in focus the whole image will be if that makes sense ??? low f number tends to be used for portraits/wildlife higher f number is more for landscape/groups of people

Anywhere between 5 and 10 meters away mate using a full frame body and 500mm lens, if I was using my 7D mkii which is a 1.6 crop sensor like your new camera I could’ve used a 300mm lens or less and easily filled the frame... The closer you can have a subject the more quality you will have in return.
-
To be fair it’s not all about the cost, more knowing a subject, some field craft, a lot of luck and the quality of the glass/lens more than the body.. A good understanding of how camera works, exposure and light etc can make or break an image.
-
Sorry, missed that part out... I normally use a Canon 1DX mkii with either a Canon 500 f4 lens or a Canon 100-400 mkii lens, I have a Canon 7D mkii as a backup camera but rarely comes out the bag to be honest... All the images in this thread were taken with the 1DX mkii and 500 f4 ?

Thanks for the positive and kind comments lads, really appreciated ?

To be honest the movie function is irrelevant if only using for photos, even now entry level DSLR’s take such high quality images and MP wise won’t make any difference unless you’re looking to print the likes of A3 or bigger...

Image stabilisation (IS) is extremely beneficial although not essential as the general rule of thumb is shutter speed should be at least of greater than focal length of lens - example 100mm lens should have minimum shutter speed of 1/100th second or 400mm lens would be minimum 1/400th second or preferably faster like 1/1000th second. To capture action then shutter speeds of 1/500th or faster should do it depending on subject, the better the light the faster the shutter speed will be... Standard kit lens will be great for general purpose photography and dogs sitting/portraits/landscap

That lens is the older mark 1 version, still a cracking lens but they’re renowned for collecting dust as they are a push/pull zoom... This place are great for 2nd hand market but still quite expensive compared to buying new from the other likes of Panamoz... https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/ Ideally you need to be looking at minimum of 3-4 FPS continuous shooting... Most entry level bodies should be fine and most will have a frame rate of this ?
