It's definitely an expensive hobby, one of my friends went for his PPL, and he was saying the full thing costs about £10k, plus an extra few grand for an Instrument Rating and Night Rating. Then unless you've got you're own plane, hiring a one can be £200 per hour. You need to have a fair bit of money behind you to keep that up. I know training to be an airline pilot can cost up to £100,000, but that must be a hell of a job.

Rather than cut their pay and expect them to do the same, we should expect them to do more and perform better with this rise. I hope it gives them the cobbles to stand up for what is right, such as domestic poverty, curbing Islamic extremism, and the Calais problem. Rather than be all PC and mealy-mouthed.

I went to college in a Northern town, at the time when EMA was still going, and kids could get a small allowance for going to college, ranging from £10 to £30 per week. The black students never integrated, and always stayed in their own groups. They were English, but spoke in a strange gangster tongue, similar to Ali G, and always wore sports gear. They all carried knives and drugs, and felt nothing of showing them in the pub across the road. I saw them myself. The African students were even scarier. The teachers and management knew about what they were up to, but did nothing, probably scared

When I was about 13 I was at a show and one of our fighters grandads got threatened by the lovely Asian boy his grandson was due to fight. The nice Asian lad got stopped in the 2nd,then him and his pack of rats disappeared before anyone caught up to them (the grandad only brought it up after the fight). I will admit that in my experience, it tends to the crowds of supporters who behave badly, not the boxers. Luckily the boxers tend to have great respect for each other, which is a lot more than I can say for the big groups of Asians supporting them, screaming, shouting, booing, hurl

There are some strange old people about. Ridiculing a minute's silence is low, defending them is even lower. Look at Russell Brand. Blaming Britain for it and then slating the minute's silence is another level of scum-baggery. I agree that racism doesn't work both ways. There were a bunch of "ethnic" people on the big questions, who were stating that it's impossible for black people to be racist, because supposedly you have to be in power to be racist. The Hippocrytes unwittingly stated that "only white people can be racist", which is entirely racist in itself. A few weeks ago there

I remember when I was at an amateur boxing show, and there was a massive presence of these people, probably around % of the crowd. They were booing boxers if they weren't from their club, and laughing and jeering when a boxer lost, and their behavior was truly disgraceful. Then a group of them stole the boxer's meals, and went through the pockets in the official's room. They talk about "Islamophobia", but can you blame people when they act like that. Thieving is one thing, but booing young kids who have the cobbles to get into a ring infront of hundreds of people, just because they aren't from

How Many Rounds Do You Use In A Year?
J_Edwards replied to David Aiken's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It's a classic case of quantity over quality. A shooter could hammer the range, shoot 2000 rounds a year, and not have one shot at a live target. Applies for an open ticket after 2 years and gets one. A shooter could shoot 200 rounds a year, all at live targets, and spend hundreds of hours in the field. Applies for an open ticket so they can quickly and easily shoot new permission. No, not enough experience, wait until next renewal. -
Liar Or Doesn't Know What He's Talking About?
J_Edwards replied to walshie's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I've heard some quality tripe over the years. My personal favourites being: 1) Someone who was claiming that an open ticket meant that you don't need to ask landowner's permission, you can shoot where you want. 2) Someone who said that you are allowed to shoot quarry on land that you don't have permission for, providing that you shoot from land that you do have permission for, but you're not allowed to retrieve the corpse. 3) An anti thought that he could "appeal" to a higher authority, to stop someone shooting on THEIR OWN land. The first two are just downright ridiculous, t -
When I lived in Germany, I spoke to people in pubs, and it was funny how their relatives always seemed to be the ones who opposed the Nazis. Only one sound old fellow stated that his father was in the Waffen SS, and that in the last days of the war, they fled from the eastern fronin Hungary, and surrendered themselves to the Americans, because they knew the Russians would have killed them.

Surely lunatics who think farming is like the holocaust should not be the heads of a "Royal" institution. They'll probably just end up like the hunt saboteur nutters, with no large-scale support, just a few die-hard extremists. I lost all faith in the RSPCA years ago. My old grandma used to donate a little bit to them, maybe £5 a month or something like that, and she has done for years. A while ago she had a knock on the door, and it was an RSPCA "officer", who said something around the lines of " We appreciate that you are a long-term and loyal donator, so would there be a possibility th

I have to admit, most of the annoying people I know have been discovered through FB. I am so tempted to leave, but I'm currently working away, and it is ideal for free messaging and keeping in touch with friends, despite the trouble it causes. Internet policemen who spout off about safety and the law, despite knowing nothing of the other person's situation. Then when someone tells them to stop causing trouble, they go all cap in hand, and start saying "but I only do it for the good of the sport". A bloke on FB messaged me, telling me my land isn't safe for firearms use, and he did this by

Like it's been said, I loved the Remington 700, but all the ones I saw would have been far too long and awquard with the mod. I prefer the look of a rifle without the mod, but I imagine they're designed for America, where mods aren't popular. I eventually went with a Mannlicher Pro Hunter, but that's just me. Feels nice, looks nice, easy to use and is relatively short with the mod.

I've done a fair bit of home brewing in my time, and I made a brown ale, and it was pretty similar. It's been made by the John Smith's brewery in Tadcaster for quite a few years now. It's quite popular in America, and has become a bit of a trendy drink, like real ales are now. I've always been of the opinion that a "true" lager must be from a country east of Germany. The Czech Republic, Poland, the Baltic States, and even Russia. The ingredients they used made a naturally pale beer, and they used to stop brewing in the summer, because is could get quite hot and spoil the fermentation. In

After reading Bronson's books, some of the thing's he's done, or said he's done, are pretty legendary. I'm no fan of his dirty protests, but he has morals, and would happily give a paedophile a good old kicking. Unfortunately a lot of the disturbing, and or entertaining things he did were left out of the film. My favourite stories out of all of his books are: 1) Attempting to strangle a child-rapist with his tie when in Rampton. His tie snapped seconds before the man's death, and he survived. 2) Hitting the Cambridge Rapist with a fire-extinguisher. 3) Throwing his chamber pot

Not Broadmoor, but my grandma worked at Rampton, which is the same sort of place, just less infamous than Broadmoor. It was in the late 70s, early 80s, when conditions there were supposedly at their worst. Her favourite story was when there was a christmas party. The patients had a band, but they could only play one song. They played it over and over again, and people never stopped dancing all night. If you read the Bronson books, there's lots about the hospitals, when they were really rough. Back when the "nurses" were 6-foot rugby players (not my grandma, obviously), wearing army boots

Well, Dave's promised a referendum, so we'll have to wait and see. Personally, I think we should make our own laws, which suit our country's interests, and put the money that we give to the EU to a better cause. With all this talk of the EU, something's bound to change.

In South Yorkshire, they don't allow .17HMR for fox, so you could either go the shotgun route, or, if you have the land, go for a centrefire. I have .223 and I'd recommend it for fox. Anywhere else in Yorkshire, it depends on your land. Personally, I think .17HMR is up to the job, providing it's a head or chest shot at under 100 yards. A large percentage of foxes I've shot would have been close enough to shoot with a 12g, and the percentage which weren't, probably could have been squeaked into range, so shotgun's always an option.

Hello All From Hull And East Riding
J_Edwards replied to Rick hull's topic in New Member Introductions
Hi Rick. I'm more of the South Yorkshire way, but from what I've heard, Hull is pretty saturated with shooters, and land isn't easy to come by. Generally speaking, very rarely will you find permissions on forum, but in my experience, the best thing to do is use your friends and contacts. Even if it's a mate from the pub who works on a farm, chances are he could put a good word in for you with the farmer, and so on. Or, join a club, where you are likely to meet some people and make new contacts. If you have some insurance, it also puts landowners at ease, as it shows that you are responsible. I -
I was in a similar position, but my police force doesn't like issuing .17HMR for foxes, so I went for .223 and .17HMR. However, I've been shooting with other people who use HMR on foxes, and I've never seen any off them get up. At sensible ranges of course, under 100 yards and with a head or chest shot. Because of this, they do tend to issue centerfire on first attempt, but that's just my force, yours may insist on conditions or that you go the rimfire route first. I have the CZ452 style in .17HMR, and I love it to bits. It feels excellent quality for the money you pay for it. I'd recommend a

Nutrition is the key, :-) Very true! I believe mouth ulcers can be caused by a lack of numerous vitamins and minerals. It's amazing how bad nutrition can make you feel terrible. I lived abroad and went for about 4 months of drinking maybe 30 pints a week, soaked up with kebabs and the occasional chinese takeaway. On hungover days I just wouldn't eat. I was a mess. After that I had every deficiency you could have. Never again will I live that lifestyle.

Flying Your Country's Flag Makes You A Simpleton And Casual Racist...
J_Edwards replied to neems's topic in General Talk
At least Ed sacked the woman who mocked the flag-draped house, I've got much more respect for him after that. How can they expect us to vote for them when they're coming out with stuff like this. How on this planet does flying an English flag make you a racist? He's either in cloud cuckoo land, or he was trying to make quick points with liberal-left - "if you don't agree with me, you're either a racist, bigot, sexist or homophobe". -
Personally, I think people are only going on about this because Bond is about as white-British as they come, and they want to shake the foundations to proove a point about anti-racism. The liberal lefties will just want to use the racism card when anyone speaks against the idea. I think Elba would be good, as he has a coolness about him. They'd have to somehow change Bond's character history though, he just can't fit into the public schoolboy, Renaissance man image. Maybe change it to a state school upbringing in Peckham, an alma mater at Sheffield Hallam University reading Media Studies,

.22Lr On An 8 Acre Stable, A A New Fac Holder
J_Edwards replied to David Aiken's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
With respect to post 32, it is strange how even despite increasing staff shortages that they should ask for written permission slips to be put on their system. Our force just asks for a landowner's contact number. I completely agree that one should contact the firearms department to confirm. Plus, the more you ring up, they might get fed up and just give you an open ticket As far as I know, on a closed certificate, the land must be cleared, and you must have permission to shoot on it. It may depend on your police force whether they ask for written permission, or just contact details. -
.22Lr On An 8 Acre Stable, A A New Fac Holder
J_Edwards replied to David Aiken's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
From what I can gather, I believe so. Also, with her input, it backs it up. It does save doing a job twice, but this was very rural farmland, planning permission is nigh-on impossible. I remember somewhere where they asked for Ordnance Survey maps, so I imagine they use them, as they show all of the fields and footpaths. They may have updated it to Google Maps, I don't know. I'm not sure how often OS maps are updated, but it can't be that regular. Plus the Google Earth image over my house is about 10 years old, so that's not any different. -

J_Edwards replied to David Aiken's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I know someone who was in the same position, where he knew that some land was cleared (upto 22-250), as the landowner had one, whereas he wanted to use a .223. He rang the firearms department to explain the situation, and confirm that the land was indeed cleared. He was met with a venom-tongue response from a woman, who stated "Well if you knew, why did you bloody ask?"! So there you go It doesn't harm to confirm, but in this light she viewed it a time-wasting, and said that he needn't bother ringing up, if he knew it was cleared.
