  1. took the camera out Lurcher jumping: The terrier isn't quite as elegant
  2. I bought one the Deben one, £56 and it will do me for this season, I didn't want to spend £200+ without knowing what I was getting exactly, it has a usable beam out to 150m. But only 2hrs battery life
  3. I wouldn't be doing anything formal with it, just pigeon shooting and walked up shooting. I must admit I am in 2 minds whether to get a pure spaniel or a spaniel/terrier.
  4. Cracking dogs, I think I have made my mind up I'll get something like this as my next bushing dog. Can you use these spaniel/terrier types like a gundog or do these loose this with the cross?
  5. Exactly what mine is doing, can be frustrating, but it is what it is, the other day the lurcher flushed one out of the long grass, she was facing the hedge, and it bolted straight past her inches away into the hedge, it was a bit like WTF dog, she didn't even seem to flinch, the the next thing she isn't missing a trick.
  6. I have been out round all my old haunts, there are rabbits where they never used to be and and not many where they should be. I have a bit of land that would have given 200+ acres of lamping and all the holes are dead, not a rabbit in sight, they used to keep the grass down like a bowling green, but not anymore. I have found a sand hole. it is on a big estate, but it is the biggest warren I know of withing 15 miles of me. I have seen a couple of blokes slinking off with ferrets in hand when I went for a wander, which made me chuckle But in short I have enough to keep me busy, but I
  7. Have you noticed if you try to 'direct' the dog you make things worse?
  8. I got worried about this, but I have learnt to let the dog work it out, I have tried mine on her own but she shows even less interest She is a bit pap by all means. I don't think it makes much difference if a dog is a good busher, it'll do it or it won't. One thing a dog can take a while to get going.
  9. I'm in south Leics but I don't really have experience dogs. One of mine is a good worker, the other hangs about outside and only heads in when the other is behind something. The lurcher is doing well.
  10. Exactly what I was worried about, an adult dog is an unknown quantity, I seriously looked at rescuing one when I bought mine but came to conclusion it wasn't worth it, I went to visit a few 9 month to 2 year old dogs and I couldn't take any of them. I haven't got the time to put things right. I got an 8 week old up in the end.
  11. Good job, I'd say the hare doesn't look too chuffed about it
  12. What was the breeding of the bitch?
  13. LOL I was just googling sal/grey x deer/grey to see what one looked like and came across that, it's a big dog and if I was after a big lurcher would be very tempted. 12 hr round trip for me to, just wonder why it is up for sale.
  14. I've noticed a lot of bed/whip x saluki pups cropping up, I guess it isn't much different size wise than putting a greyhound over one. Is a saluki that much slower than a greyhound?
  15. Sorry forgot about this, I have I think sorted out a nice hob, and forgot to return a call to someone else I am looking for an adult ferret ideally, but if stuck I might consider kits, I am working over towards Bromyard at the minute so I might be able to nit over to S Wales.
  16. To be fair it isn't so much the breeding as the size and build, but yes it would come down to what they could do in reality. I know they a heavy bull cross could still be used for ferreting, but I would rather a dog siimilar to these for the job, I don't think with deer you would have needed to raw power of a bull cross, if you look back in history dogs for edible game have never been thick set.
  17. I could also see back in the day you could have a dog like that ferreting, rabbiting taking hare and deer as well as the odd fox. I have seen a few bigger lurchers I like, I do like deer greys as well.
  18. Done, it looks like 10 years on the balance hasn't changed at all, is anyone else fed up with the constantly loaded questions to do with this?
  19. I don't know much, but taking deer with lurchers interests me, I found these for sale and this the sort of thing I would think of as a deer/all-round dog, I can see a bit of bull does a long way, but these make me looks twice. Deer/grey x saluki/grey/collie/grey Saluki/grey x deer/grey (can't save the picture) http://www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/113302309/saluki-greyhound-deerhound-greyhound.html
  20. Just another nail in the coffin, anything that someone will read and regurgitate as gospel to their mate and they'll think next time they see a lurcher. I have put some tits straight in the last few months.
  21. This you would say is brighter than the Deben 12v? I bought one of those £9.99 (supposedly) 1200 lumen torch things off ebay and was able to lamp a rabbit with the dog, about 75yrds of usable beam, slips in a pocket and lasts 2 hours. But doesn't compare to a proper lamp.
  22. I justbought the built in battery as well for £60, but it doesn't have an adjustment for the focus does yours? Doesn't seem too bad, not shone it about yet, I got it because I couldn't be bothered shelling out £200+ without knowing what I was getting.
  23. LOL I think that is the case with a lot of dogs, I have been using a solid rubber ring about 10" in dimater and rolling it out as fast as I can along the grass. She has one from stopping her head over the top of it, to making contact with the occasional catch, I'll just keep playin games like that and slip her on the odd easy rabbit in the lamp.
  24. Cheers, I have been reading some blogs and other stuff, it does appear there are two kinds of dog starting, and as you said they usually come good, hopefully get her going well by the end of this season
