Border collies are without doubt one of the brightest dogs, which depending on your situation is either a blessing or a curse. Will they retrieve?, yes and probably most other things you ask of it, my advice, keep one find a good home for the other, you'll make a better job of one, especially if you have to ask something as simple as will they retrieve. Alternatively you train one and let the wife train the other.

Did your mum operate a still by any chance??.

Shooting hares invariably arouses controversy, I don't shoot them myself but, if they're being shot in those kind of numbers year in year out then somethings working. Also in those kinds of numbers they could be classed as an agricultural pest. What I would consider shit were someone shooting hares on ground where they are few and far between, then again if there numbers were low in so far as a sighting was rare, I wouldn't run them with a dog either, (pre ban).

It has without a doubt been hushed up as long as was possible and even now when the media had no choice but to report and comment on it, it still hasn't been giving the exposure it should have had. I got fed up waiting to hear the details on the news tonight, it was right at the end after less important news, they were probably hoping as many people as possible would miss it.

Looks the same dog to me with it's tail in a different position.

They look much better stripped out mate as opposed to clipped, keep on top of her and do it yourself, it's not difficult and you'll save a bit of money.

Swim out 100yards in tidal water on a stormy freezing cold december morning and retrieve geese and ducks Could do, I've a lab here no bigger or chunkier than a lot of collie greyhounds, her coats no denser, so we should assume she's not capable of doing it.
-
Its been a long time since I ,ve enjoyed a thread The points you make lab are good ones but a collie blooded lurcher is capable of them, regarding chasing deer, I'd agree it might be a problem if the dog was used in the pursuit of deer and was out of sight of the owner. Not a problem if your dog (like a gundog) was broken to deer as it is sheep. There's a great deal of similarities between an all round lurcher and a gundog, obedience, nose and handler control being the obvious ones, there are lurcher owners who put the time and effort into their dogs like gundog owners (more in a lot of case

Lets throw this into the mix, what does a gundog actually do that is so hard and that a well bred lurcher is incapable of??. Find game, I would expect a lurcher to find game.. Flush game, as above but obviously is required to catch it rather than flush it . Drop to shot my lurchers did or rather could if that's what I wished..My preference would be that they pinned it before it went anywhere, obviously not a desirable trait in a gundog. Retrieve, again a quality I would insist on in a lurcher, and wouldn't tax a well bred lurcher.. .The debate could go on forever, for every wayward usele

. All the services you mention above use collies also as do the likes of mountain rescue, the last time I looked the majority of dogs being used (Scotland) were collies. You won't get any arguements from me regarding a well bred gundogs capabilities, I'm only saying what I have experienced and I'll also concede the point that the majority (not all) of the lurchers I've seen the equivilant and better than a lot of gundogs have been collie blooded. i'll sit on the fence here and try and be everyones mate and say that many times over the years I've had a notion to own and work a gundog bred l
-
No. I thought that was the case, pretty much eliminates the chances of a lurcher or any cross for that matter besting a purpose bred gundog.
-
Just out of interest are cross breeds allowed to compete in gundog trials ??.

Never ceases to amaze me that certain gundog men just can't accept that there are lurchers with better noses and hunting ability than a great deal of gundogs. I can partly understand to an extent why they would think this I suppose, for whereas gundogs of all breeds have (or should have) a common trait IE nose, lurchers being a type rather than a breed with many different breeds in their makeup do not. Also depending on your chosen type of hunting a good nose is not a requirement and in many cases (lamping being the obvious) hunting up is frowned upon and considered a fault. Also when you re

Best nose and best hunting dog I've ever witnessed was my first cross collie greyhound, eye wiped many a purpose bred gundog, the shooting fraternity would like to label all lurchers as simply point and fire dogs. But a well bred lurcher with a good base line is the equivilant of and better than many gundogs.
-
The thing is also, whilst the original poster might make it very clear they're in a country where it's legal to be doing whatever the post describes and the photos shown are breaking no laws in that country, the toe rags that swipe them and put them on anti hunting sites as bullshit propaganda sure as hell won't.

Fair enough mate, your dogs, your decision, my school of thought is, if they're wearing collars then they might possibly snag on something, if they're not wearing them then they can't possibly snag on anything.
-
Ive never seen a problem once with leaving a collar on a lurcher running through thick cover or hitting hedge's while lamping, mine go through some right thick cover and work very regular with hound's and ive never had a problem how many lurcher's have ye seen rap themselve's up in cover ? I was thinking more of them snagging on something rather than getting tangled in cover, also, because you haven't experienced any problems don't take it for granted you never will. So now your here and you also run your dogs with collars on, can I ask you why?.
-
Good write up mate, aren't you a tad worried running your dogs through woodland/cover etc with their collars on?. I'll take it for granted you've not had any problems or you'd have them off. Why do you leave them on ??.
-
More mouths, less food and aid per person, it's not rocket science. I understand the mindset where more children the higher likliehood of some surviving but it's not obviously working. I often think that we would be better offering them aid and incentives to have fewer children, and there would be more aid per head and perhaps fewer children dying.

Respect has to be earned mate and I don't mean by holding a tune, apart from that what did she actually do?. I'll save my respect for more deserving like our troops who have died in the recent conflicts, they are worthy of respect. Rregardless of how good a singer she was, she was a junkie and her demise was self inflicted..

Wouldn't do it with pigeons mate, they end up coo coo.

Enjoyed the man's books and articles, RIP.

Are collie crosses too clever for the average lurcherman??.
mackay replied to mackay's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I would say that a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie would suit more people than a first cross, they have brains as well as speed, but, in the right hands in rougher ground I think a first cross comes into it's own. I've owned both mate and both have their special qualities so to speak. My preference, I'd say a racier type first cross. What are your thoughts on the difference between half x and 3/4 bred and lurcher to lurcher bred dogs that work out as half x or 3/4, if that makes sense. My 1st choicewould be lurcher to lurcher, that works out about half / half. To just kill stuff, 3/4 1
