The Best Lurcher Men And The Dogs They Choose...
alan81 replied to Dan McDonough's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
sidd have you ran a first cross bull/hound I have one here and she's good for more than just one thing ie fox. she will take rabbits all night no problem and turns as sharp as any dog. bring her ferreting and she sweeps them up ( not the ferrets mind ). -
first cross bull/hound is a pit bull x greyhound. you mentioned the staffy I would never cross a staffy with a greyhound. true gameness and stamina has been bred out of the staffy plus most of them have breathing problems.

Cheers Trunk he wont be seeing another one for a while now. The dog in the left of the pic is the bitch I told you about before in a pm. this will be her first proper season on fox and things are looking very good. I saw your 11 month old pup in another post nice dog all the best with it mate.

using salt water is good to prevent initial infection from setting in but if used every day it slows down the healing process. if its a small cut just leave it well alone and she will take care of it. don't stop her from licking it she'll keep it cleaner than any bandage because puss or infection wont have a chance to settle. I had a lurcher here 6 or 7 years ago and a staffy I had took a lump of his shoulder about 2" round right to the muscle. there was a 2" round hole where you could see the muscle. I gave him 1ml of penicillin and kept an eye on him and after about 8 to 10 weeks he was full

well then feed her as your feeding the other dogs but I would buy a bag of mother and puppy just for her.
-
if your already feeding meat I would forget about the dry dog food for all your dogs not just the pup. meat, uncooked bone, organ some cooked or steamed veg and fish once or twice a week. when your feeding raw properly your just wasting money on dry food. feed her up till she looks [BANNED TEXT] and healthy then feed her 5% of her body weight per day and cut down as she gets older.

Marble371 its 5 months old it is a pup leave it for another 3 or 4 months then worry about rabbits.

cheers bird its a great feeling when you see them get stuck in for the first time and not hold back. I'm looking forward to the season even more now but ill still bring him on slowly slowly. I learned that lesson a long time ago I ruined a couple of good dogs because " I couldn't wait ".

cheers decky I wouldn't usually let a 9 month old pup to a fox but he was loose I had no choice and he did well anyway. he wont see another now till September/October. but as you say they have to start sometime.

well I went for a walk up the fields with a few of the dogs at 4:30 this morning just letting them do there own thing. the terrier flushed a few rabbits but I didn't bag any, still good fun. I was coming over a brow in the field when the bitch took of like a rocket with the terrier and pup after her. there was a fox about 50 or 60 yards away in the middle of the field and it headed for a ditch about another 100 yards from where he was. the bitch caught him just at the ditch and once she had the fox the pup didn't mess about getting stuck in and the terrier to when he caught up. now I'm not re

if there's no guns I take it its bay, catch dogs then humane dispatch. I would love to do that type of hunting and I have two pit bulls here I recon would love it too. if there's a place for next year I think I could be tempted. Edited though there was nothing illegal in the first place. I wont edit the dogs I'm not trying to hide them.atb

don't use a bark collar on a pup you'll destroy him. when he starts barking hit him in the face with a bucket of water and let a roar at him and when he barks again do the same again and again, after a few nights he'll shut up.

well maybe people look at lurchers differently in Britten than they do in Ireland. hunting Is not seen as a bad thing here and lurchers are in every street and housing estate in the country. I can honestly say iv never met anyone who thought my dogs were "killer dogs". Edited to say that farmers here have no problem with dogs been loos on there land once there stock broke and a lot of them are glad to see me out with the dogs.

I have yet to meet someone who sees lurchers and there owners in that way.

1st cross 23"tts. she'll take rabbits all night no problem and make short work of a fox.

pups are in top order mate fair play

I like the sound of the 2nd x bull 2nd x wheaten could make a handy dog. as for the 3/4 it could go either way in terms of flapping, he'll either be fast enough or he wont but that will all have to be seen. he could also be a good working dog, that will have to be seen to. the joys of working dogs.

take the ammo I use Hornady 53gr superformance. when you zero at 200 yards you will be 1.1" high at 100 yards and you will be 5.6" low at 300 yards so that means there is very little adjustment needed out to 300 yards its more or less just point and shoot on a fox sized target. when your zeroed at 100 yards you have to make a lot more adjustment's for 200 yards and 300 yards because after the 100 yard mark the bullet starts to drop fast. A 200 yard zero makes for easier and safer shooting. There's lots of trajectory charts for the .223 on the net just Google them and Google charts for differe

I use Hornady 53gr superformance and love them. I think almost any ammo you get for the .223 will be more than up to the job. why don't you zero at 200 yards you will have much flatter shooting than a 100 yard zero.

A Morning Out With My Baikal O/u
alan81 replied to CaptainBanana's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
dogs flushing to the shotgun is great sport. atb -
your dog is fine on raw, happy and content and if kept fit will do all you want of him. when you put him on gain you say his aggression rose and he tore up the couch and wanted to run all the time and I bet he's always panting to. these are all sings of what was a happy dog on raw that is now a stressed out dog on kibble. stick with the raw mate it sounds like your dog is happier on it.

as said the 1/12 will handle up to 55gr but the 1/8 will handle everything from 40gr to 80gr. the reason 1/12 is seen as the standard twist for the .223 is it was mainly sold as a hunting/ varmenting round and the heavier bullets weren't needed. now a lot of people want one gun to do both hunting and target shooting and this is where the 1/8 twist comes in because it will do both. my rifle is 1/12 twist but I bought second hand at a good price, if I was buying a new gun I would go with a 1/8 twist.
