An Hour Out With My Son Hunting Charlie

False widows - nothing a blow torch wouldn't solve, no need to be scared, just cautious. -
Here's a version of it, although note I did alter it slightly to what I thought it should say eg removal of the words "suitable rifle calibres" (for the reason it then opens up an argument as to what is suitable and if something is found unsuitable you're guilty of armed trespass - its safer in my opinion just to have authority to use shotgun and rifles on the land as then the permission stands for all calibres). Your FAC determines what's suitable anyway so I see no need to complicate the authority in a way that could land you in trouble. I've also altered the insurance clause to should b

Well I don't know how much zoom is on the video but the deer actually looks quite close and the gun seems to be shooting high so my interpretation of what was going on is probably he has his sights adjusted for long range, say 200 yards and he's trying to shoot a deer he walked up on by chance at what appears to be about 30 yards or at lest close range. Result is he's firing way over the top as the bullet is on the upward arc. I'd say as a guess, this is someone who doesn't understand or know about ranging and turret adjustment or using the reticule for BDC. I'm guessing they probably think be

Yeah I just fell on the floor laughing especially when the deer finally ran off.

Good result. Common sense prevails at last.

I think if you want it for target shooting you need to consult with the club / range 1st as some have velocity restrictions on rimfire ranges so .17HMR might be too hot for the range. I've heard of at least one range where max rimfire velocity is 1,600fps. So you need to check 1st as .22 is the more usual calibre for rimfire target shooting. Also, if you fancy doing competition, you may find .17HMR if permitted on the range doesn't have a section. Personally if shooting live game I'd tend towards the .17HMR over .22 but everyone has different opinions here and its horses for course

Its alright but its a pain in the a$$ the morning after.

If they want to see for a chat, they will come and find you, other area or not. I think at the end of the day, the key question here is going to be whether or not they feel your father will uphold the principles of safe keeping and ensure you don't have access and also as to whether or not they trust you not to coerce him into giving you access. The spare key will almost certainly have to be at the bank. I don't think they'll trust it to be in a family safe to which your father has sole access but to which you might conceivably gain access. They're also going to have to consider as to whe

Also, look for second hand. A good gun will cost more than £1K from the major manufacturers but there are bargains to be hand in the 2nd hand field so long as the gun is still in proof ie be careful where you buy from or at least get it looked over by someone in the know who can tell the amount of action wear and / or tell by eye / measure the barrel thickness.

Appreciate that but if you have it have it granted anyway what difference does it make if you blast a few rabbits along the way? It's as the OP said, why shouldn't he be allowed to shoot a rabbit if he comes across one with his .223. Would be pretty much the same for me. Any application would be for deer / fox as good reason with other vermin as essentially a 2nd target species. I'm not arguing with what you say, it could well be difficult to get that on a 1st grant but if they're granting it you anyway, what's the difference? It's not as if they're keeping the rifle out of your hands.
-
Yeah thanks for the explanation, that makes sense, I suppose it makes poaching control easier but their job is firearms control not game keeping in this instance. Like you said, Barmy especially as all you need to go deer shooting is the money to book a stalking trip and therefore the money to be able to get it added just the same. I agrer with regards to the rabbits he should go back and ask for vermin or AOLQ except deer. Otherwise I still think I'd be fighting them with the BASC's backing. In fact might be worth getting the BASC's help before re-applying as to my knowledge it seems
-
Why? I just can't see the logic behind that. You can't shoot what you don't have so what difference does it make, and if any deer ever did come onto the land then he couldn't legally shoot them anyway without the farmers permission 1st, I'm presuming here his written permission is for vermin or pests but not deer. So ALOQ wouldn't give him permission without additional written quarry permission from the farmer. It also appears from what the OP said that it was rabbits that were the stated reason for denial and the fact that .223 was too powerful for rabbits but he doesn't need to show

Took Foxdropper Out For A Buck...........

Yeah. I use one of these though so I know they help free the back. They're not comfortable though but its a case of no pain, no gain. Chiro works best for me. The racks just an in between thing for it stiffens. -
Can't see any reason from my understanding of the rules. You already have shown good reason to possess the gun ie fox control and its been granted. The calibre guidelines only apply to showing good reason and they're guidelines. Once you have shown good reason, and providing that is still ongoing, I can't see any reason why the list of shootable quarry should not be expanded. The calibre guidelines don't form a list as to what you should exclusively be allowed to shoot with it, merely what you need to show your shooting in order to be granted that calibre in the 1st place. There's no reaso

Took Foxdropper Out For A Buck...........

These can be quite good for relaxing off muscles and putting everything back in line: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00477EG02/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 OK not the most comfortable thing to lie on but does the trick. -
I know, you have just seen Shooter on Freeview and you're going to try an empty plastic coke bottle! Or a pillow / cushion seems to be the other Hollywood favourite. I was just wondering if his local Dunelm Mill had a run on cushions / pillows.

I agree with this 100%. I like a fast "sharp" cartridge for pigeon as they can really turn on the speed if spooked. If money is an issue then there are plenty of other options but personally for a few pence more I prefer the comfort of something that requires less lead time. The again I also like White Gold for clays and that's another fast cartridge.

Thanks for clarifying that Charlie. Didn't sound quite right. Maybe Matt meant what I said but just didn't phrase it very well.

I'm sorry I don't quite understand this although I don't hold an FAC. What makes you think that if it says "All lawful quarry" that you can't shoot anything smaller than a fox? is it that you don't have permission for small vermin on the land or is it just that you're interpreting it as fox or larger quarry? I can't see why you would need a separate permission for quarry smaller than the stated quarry. Surely AOLQ is AOLQ. I would have though AOLQ means exactly what is says, anything thats lawful to shoot with a rifle subject to your having permission on the land to shoot it. So if you

My advice is ignore what you've been told and read the proof marks for yourself. Its your safety on the line if you've been told wrongly. 2 useful resources: http://www.gunproof.com/Proofing/proofing.html http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=8&ved=0CE4QFjAH&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.basc.org.uk%2Fdownload.cfm%2Fdocid%2F6EE144C9-41B6-476F-81C89A9220A9708D&ei=qyg6Upe9Kom70QWh-oGIAQ&usg=AFQjCNE3A4b-WSqIa-ufL9NTVNywBS39eg&sig2=kfsvvAXJEJlCRud7ZV4TjQ&bvm=bv.52288139,d.d2k&cad=rja

I've spent the last 30 years walking round with people that do and I do shoot shotguns. But thanks for the contribution.

I really don't have the energy to go round in circles. Lets just agree to disagree on this one. I believe HMR is ricochet safer, you believe .22 is perfectly safe and on the occasional times that anything exits is the shooters fault. Case closed. That isn't what I said! Please do NOT misquote me, I have never made any such blanket statement that .22 is perfectly safe and on the occasional times that anything exits is the shooters fault. Sorry I didn't mean to misquote, you said in 90% of situations its the shooters fault.
