Never been a labour voter in nearly 30 years of voting but after what the tories / lib dems have done to innocent people on disability benefits and after cutting taxes for the filthy rich, I'll never vote for either again. Both Cameron and Clegg are just spoilt rich public school boys in my opinion with no grasp on reality or the how most ordinary people from the middle or working classes are struggling to pay the bills. Labour for me and I'll take my chances with the guns.

the fact is 40 yards away the fox "could" walk clean through the pattern! I take out the best tool for the job and whilst that will be a rifle generally, the shotgun comes out sometimes, but I have never found the situation right for shotgun/SG and fox. +1. It would also be interesting to know the retained energy at 40yds as the shot from a shotgun lose energy very rapidly plus you have the issue of no expansion. Not an issue with many shot to spread the shock but much more of an issue with a single shot. Hence why greater shot numbers become an advantage.

What SS Said. Not enough shot. Once you get onto really big cartridges then you only get something like 6 shot to a cartridge. Shoot at any kind of reasonable distance and you might only get a single hit or maybe a double. Each shot is then like a bullet apart from its non expanding and has a comparatively low amount of energy. The result is unless you hit something vital, its pretty much like shooting the fox with low power solid target ammo from a rifle apart from the fact the shotgun only has a fraction of the power of even that. You wouldn't do it with a rifle so why would you do i

I've had a SGC for 15 years. Yep I usually go out with my friend and yep I've not been foxing for probably 4 or 5 years. I don't hold an FAC just walk round with him and spot when he has he rifles out. He has several calibres .22 RF, .223, .30-06, all on open ticket. So scenario are either I spot and he takes rifles, or we go out out with both (him rifles, me shotty), or shotgun only.

I used to use 42g No: 1 though a Beretta Silver Pigeon (not my gun) from 2 3/4" Gamebore Mammoth Hi-Bird Cartridges (non magnum). They don't appear to make the load any more, only Magnum now. If specifically going out for fox then I'd use 3/4 & full choke. If general walking round then 1/4 and 1/2 but restrict the range a bit more. I also like to head shoot if the fox is face on with the bead roughly at the tip of the nose if at spreadable range. That way you get part of the load into the skull and the other part into the neck / chest. Obviously the aiming point has to be varied as

It's unlikely to penetrate that far with No: 7. NEVER attempt anything this large with shot so small. 3's at the smallest you should use although they're marginal. No: 1's or BB's are best. AAA's Ok but you're starting to get to the upper limit. I wouldn't go above AAA. Use the heaviest load you're proofed for as heavier load = more shot = potentially more hits = more energy transferred. Its the shock that kills not the penetration with a shotgun so you need a combination of energy delivered by the size of the shot + numbers. If you're short on either energy or numbers

Isn't that only if unattended? Not in NI its not paragraph 4b on your fac,"reasonable cautions must be taken for safe custody of firearms and ammunition". I have been stopped by police whilst carrying firearms in my car and if they are slipped with the bolt and magazine out then no problem. out of sight is best even if you just throw your coat over the slip its in.whether this applies to n Ireland I don't know.. Yeah that was my understanding for the UK. I imagine the NI guys are correct though in that there are probably different rules over there what with the past h -

That's harsh. I was on a pheasant shoot in Derbyshire once when an anti walking his dog decided to have a go at all of us. Can't remember what the wording was but something like" You f.. scum should f...off back to your homes. You shouldn't be out here murdering innocent animals and disturbing the countryside". Probably a bit more but was a long time ago. Anyway a bit of a verbal exchange went off between him and the captain of the shoot, who incidentally handed his gun to someone else whilst talking to him, and then he left. Guy in his 50's actually so not a youngster. Anyway, apparen -

I spoke to the person concerned its Mattersey Rifle and Pistol Range near Doncaster. http://www.matterseyrapc.org.uk/ They are recruiting and have enquiry days once a month when you can turn up and get the spiel plus have a shoot. Other than that you have to be a member. -

I don't think you're doing anything illegal shining a torch across someone else's land. The only possible action anyone could have against you that I could see would be for nuisance which would be civil, but only if eg you were shining it in the windows of their house or across their land repeatedly night after night in a way that caused them distress. I think in the light of what you said above, it might be worth making your permission aware of the fact that you were approached the other night just in case they contact him (assuming they were the neighbours) and tell a different story -
Ok, perhaps I missed something, which ones don't Highland Outdoors supply? Cheers Not so much that but when you look at Howas adverts in Uk magazines they seem to advertise the synthetic 1500's. I've not seen any other models advertised although I admit I'm not a regular reader. Also don't Highland's Outdoor supply parts ie separate actions, stocks etc rather than complete Howa guns?

Shooting Range South Yorkshire ??
Alsone replied to Tornado1979's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There's definitely one at Barnsley in an old quarry as I have friends that go, Its a short range (50 yd I think) rimfire range and a few long range (several hundred metre) centrefire ranges. I'm not sure of the name though unfortunately. I'm also pretty sure you have to be a member. I'll see if I can find out. For some reason the Wombwell area is springing to mind but could be unrelated. -
I see there are some really nice Howa Laminates and stainless setups. Funny thing is you never see these advertised in the UK despite these being EU models: http://www.howarifles.eu/resources/HOWA.pdf

More clean up than pick up! If you were a farmer it would be a gun and fertiliser spreader in one.

You'd deffo want a electric golf trolley to carry it around on.

i was told to draw imaginary lines from left ear to right eye and right ear to left eye then aim just off centre to where they cross? infact it was in a book "basic butchery of livestock and game" Don't worry no horses are harmed.

If there was a ricochet it was probably because it hit at too shallow an angle for the thickness of the bone. The skull is only covered by a very thin layer of skin, no real flesh. When a vet euthanisises an animal I believe they place the muzzle against the head at a right angle to the skull. However, I'm not a vet or farmer so can't verify this. As for the police failing to kill the horse with multiple shots - .223 probably is too small for an animal of that size for a heart / lung shot at range. Remember a fully grown horse is larger bodied than a red deer. I would have thought you'

Most vets use handguns to euthanasise large animals. Commonly these are .22 or .38 and from point blank I believe either will kill a horse. I seem to remember seeing a horse euthanisised with .22. Something like a .38 Special only has 255ftlbs at the muzzle or .38 S&W 150ft lbs. You can guarantee .22 LR therefore is less than 100ft lbs although I couldn't find the figures. Even a fraction of that applied directly to the skull would be enough to kill: A .223 is in a whole different league - around1,200 ft lbs at the muzzle.

If you want an all round selection then Fast 32gms No: 6 for everything except ducks and geese which need steel. I've yet to fail to stop anything 1st shot with Gambore Clear Pigeon No:6. Very hard hitting. Personally I'd carry non leadl BB's in the heaviest non magnums you can get. That will cover you for geese and fox. Will be overkill for ducks but legal. You don't want to be carrying too many cartridge types otherwise by the time you find the cartridge and load the target has gone. So 2 types - 32gm Clear Pigeon No: 6 and non lead BB - 2 pockets - 1 left, 1 right hand side.

I'd suggest taking a look at Sako as well if your budget can stand it. Sako are made by the same people as Tikka - all part of the Beretta group these days although I believe they were long established firearms compnaies before coming under the Beretta wing. Quality at Sako as superb as is accuracy. I'm not saying there's nothing better, but for the money you get a very good gun. Worth considering the Sako 85 Hunter as well as Tikka T3 therefore and the other brands mentioned above. Personally I have an affinity towards laminated stainless heavy barrelled guns, but that's a per -
You shouldn't have too much trouble at 240 yards although very good shot for a kid. .22-250 can be shot out to 1,000 yards in expert hands and even a hobbyist should be able to make shots at 600-700 yards with a decent scope and tables. You'll find loads of Youtube vids of 500-750yd shots by amateurs at small targets. Maybe you're just underestimating your current skill level.
