Ground must be hard, or the lurcher just runs wide, did the dog catch it?

Use to go to that fair years ago back in the 90's, good craic back then and got some good deals... Got a decent hunting knife their that lasted for years, lost it gutting a deer one morning! Good job you did not buy that trap, pure con that at that silly price! I remember some of the goats that were at the fair back then, were pure wild, caught on mountains bogs ect and crammed into trailers and bought to the fair, some of the prices they were asking for these wild goats was a joke..lol ! Not sure what its like now a days at the that fair.

Best Course On Dvd Irish Or English
Saluki246 replied to New speedie 2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Good course here, after a long slip and nabbed it just before it got in a hole. ! -
Love the way they hunt..

Their is not that many, if any, full out working salukis here in ireland, taking hares consistently. They may take the odd one, or a few bunny's ect, but nothing like a good working lurcher would or good well bred coursing dog. They mainly get used for breeding in coursing circles to add stamina and good feet.

I know of Mohill, good land in parts round their and the last time i hunted back in the 90's, their was a good population of hares. Not sure what its like now as i have not been up their in a few years. As for rabbits, did not see many, just the odd one, but they could be more now. Good luck with your stay when you come over, im sure some one on here that is living not far from their, or around their will help you out.

Some Pics Of Irish Lady Bred Dogs
Saluki246 replied to low plains drifter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Grand looking dogs their, heard a lot of good things about that breeding, keep the pics coming. -
Just to add, most of the land in Leitrim and around carrick, is bad rough old land, rushy fields, hills, lased with barbed wire, mad gates ect ect, also, i would not trespass, stick to your permission, as their is the odd farmer their that will shoot your dogs without a care and if the guards are called (police), the guards will be on side of the land owner! Its a wild place here at times! The land as said, is not the best, very small tight fields. Their use to be a good population of hares, but due to over hunting by certain persons, they have all but gone in a lot of them places. Have fun,

Saluki Men / Bringing On Pups / Summer Hares
Saluki246 replied to Ideation's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I find, slipping in more than 1 dog and worse 2, makes them get in each others way! A good dog/bitch, seems to work the hare better on its own. As for summer hunting, certain members on this topic, have done it to bring on pups. Each to their own, but as i get more into this crazy game of coursing, i find slipping just the one dog, the best, you know what you have then. -
Yes, the weather is not helping, its pissing down as i speak here, ground flooded in most parts, blowing a gale, its more like january out their then may!

Ducas have stopped most of it where i am. Its a shame to see it go. their is still lads cutting even though its been banned, but the government are making it hard for them.

Top pics and read. I was out for a few hours early this morning and if my young lurcher was not with me, i think i would of got crushed to death by a heard of mad bullocks that had just been let out on fresh grass, this tends to make them crazy for a while as they have been housed all winter in barns, so when out on fresh grass, its like a sugar rush for them lol... My bitch did well to keep them back till i got the hell out of their... !!

Coursing Saplings, What Age Do You Give Them To?
Saluki246 replied to Saluki246's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Agree, their all different. I also think, getting them out from young, learning to cross fences ect, helps a lot in the long run. Pup i have at the moment, is just over 11 month, she was very puppyish up till now, but over the last week, she is starting to click very well, getting more with it. Over the summer, i will see how she does on the odd one and take it from their. -
Coursing Saplings, What Age Do You Give Them To?
Saluki246 posted a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Well folks, for the ones that did coursing pre ban in uk and for the ones that do it now here in ireland, when bringing up a sapling, how long would you give it before you decide if its going to make the grade or not? How many runs would you let it have and by watching the runs, know of it will do the job well or not? Some say, once they reach 10 to 12 month, get them going on a few hares, others wait till their 18 month or more? What is your way of entering your saplings? each to their own i suppose, but would like to hear your opinions and experiences on the matter, thanks. -
