Not that shocking. I've been a vet nurse for many years - the first place I worked at was a one vet practice. He would regularly take in cats/dogs with vomiting and diarrhoea because he could "feel" something inside them. He would knock them out with gas anaesthetic, cut through the skin on the belly, sew it back up with 4-6 stitches. He would show the owners an xray of a cat abdomen with a drawing pin in its tummy, and charge the owners £100's for xrays, operation etc etc - when it was nothing more than an upset tum.
