Cheers all... just wish I got to practise my shot placement on maggies a bit more often. As soon as I go outside, they're off, so I have to creep around inside our mud room/utility room and gently slide the rifle out of the window. If I get lucky, they're still there by the time I've got into position.

It's been a bit of a dry year for coypus... but our lake has now finally filled up, so hopefully there'll be some monster mutant rat action in the not-too-distant future... Meanwhile, I've been trying to thin out the magpie population around here -- which seems to have exploded this year. Oddly though, after I shot nine magpies earlier in the year, they seem to have become a little wary of landing on our property... go figure! This one overcame his shyness to hang around our chicken shed, which is where they like to steal our hens' eggs from. Not this time, sucker. Shot was taken

Pianoman is right, as always. I have installed a FAC V-Mach kit in my 97, and it's now running at 13 fpe and achieving 10mm groups at 33 yards with JSB Exact Heavies. However, that's with just 2 preload washers in there (I think they sent 6, plus a nylon spacer thingy). Any more, and the rifle would have been unshootable to start with -- the recoil was extremely snappy at first, but it's settled down now. In short, to achieve reliable, accurate FAC levels, you need a big, heavy, solidly-engineered springer. There's a .22 HW80 for sale on the Active Shooter forum at the mo' for £225 in

Try wadcutter pellets like the RWS Hobby or similar. They're normally pretty accurate at short range, and shouldn't overpenetrate. Otherwise, get a Ratcatcher and plink away! I have a Crosman 2240 .22 CO2 pistol to which I've added a shoulder stock, so it's now basically a low-power ratcatcher with a pistol barrel and no silencer. I use it for rats inside my chicken shed. It runs at 6 fpe max and splats the little buggers nicely -- no problems with overpenetration.

What about DIY? The parts are easily available, and it's not brain surgery...

Very Quiet Pellet Trap / Backstop

Old socks destined for the bin are cheaper, easier and just as effective... or old towels... or old offcuts of loft insulation... -
Can Anyone Recomend A Decent Cheap Bipod
Coypu Hunter replied to maxwell's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Thought you'd just gone into the Chop Suey business... Get a Harris bipod or a clone, but check it out in the shop first. If it's not solid like a Harris, don't buy it. What's the bipod for? Don't say "springer"... just don't... -
Never heard of concealed carry?

For mice, moles and rats, I use an Umarex Beretta .177 BB gun (CO2). For larger pests, I use a Crosman 2240 .22 or my Crosman 357 .177 (also CO2 pistols). They're more than enough to despatch trapped coypus, which have a much thicker skull than a fox. You'll get overpenetration with BBs or domed pellets on smaller quarry, but I use an old tin of Walther hollowpoints in .22, and Crow Magnums in .177 -- hollowpoints don't normally come out the other side. I use domed pellets on coypus to penetrate the thick skull, but don't get any overpenetration.

Very Quiet Pellet Trap / Backstop
Coypu Hunter replied to dangerousdan's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Strewth! Motors moving carpet tiles around randomly?!? Some people have way too much time on their hands! Some offcuts of wood, a chopped-up strap hinge and some offcuts of steel, a few bits of bungee cord and a couple of hooks... stuff it with old sock, towels or jeans and hang it wherever you like. Silent, even when it stops a .22 round. -
You can buy sample tins of JSB Exact pellets in 4.50, 4.51, 4.52mm. Might be worth a try and cheaper than buying loads of tins, if you want to establish which head size works best for you. Mind you, with my springer, different nominal head sizes on different pellets work differently. When my 97 was running at sub-12 fpe, it loved Weihrauch F&T Specials (4.51mm), but they were just slightly shaded by AA Diabolo Fields in 4.50. It's now running at 13 fpe or so, and prefers JSB Exact Heavies in 4.52. Go figure.

It's called the Weihrauch HW97K over here, and it's one of the most accurate spring air rifles available.

...or could indeed be three flyers... or could be that you're zero's slightly off to the left, although I'd expect that to take the group less than an inch to the left if you're only moving from 30 to 45 yards... Easy one first: check for flyers. Three shots isn't enough to gauge if you're zero's bang on or not. Try a few longer strings at 45 yards -- three or four strings of five shots should do it -- and see if the problem was caused by flyers. If the problem's still there, your 30-yard zero could be slightly out. Zero your scope at 45 yards in terms of windage, but leave the elevati

There are three things to consider -- first, the wind, which will push the bullet around quite a lot, especially if you're using subsonic ammo. Also, you can't tell what the wind is doing 50m away, unless you set up a flag or some streamers and shoot between the gusts. Second: the ammo you're using, which may seem to perform well at 25m, but shows its true colours at 50m, if it doesn't work well in your barrel. Third, your original zero. If you were shooting slightly to the right of the bull at 25m, or if your zero was compensating for what the wind was doing at 25m, then the effect wi

As well as budget, what will you be using it for? Target shooting, competition, hunting, all three?

New Gun Advice Please
Coypu Hunter replied to pappabear's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The TX is supposed to be an excellent shooter straight out of the box, so if it's been run in for you, it should be even better, if anything. All springers are hold sensitive to a greater or lesser extent, but if you're familiar with the Artillery Hold, you should soon get to grips with it. Try before you buy if you can though, to make sure there's nowt wrong with it. -
I use Pelgun Oil from Crosman, they recommend it for their PCPs and CO2 guns. Here's a question for you Ratcatcher owners. I have a Crosman 2240 pistol, and have added sight mounts, a small scope and the rifle stock. I've been trying to sort out a longer barrel for it, plus a silencer, but haven't had any success getting an answer from GMAC Custom Parts. Does anyone know if the 2250 and 2240 barrels are interchangeable? I'm trying to find out if the 14.5" 2250 barrel will fit the 2240. It's this one: http://www.gmaccustomparts.com/epages/BT3197.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT3197/Produc

I used to have the 850 AirMagnum, which was the CO2 forerunner of the R8. If the R8 is anything like as accurate as the 850 was, then you'd be on to a winner. The trigger on mine was excellent, which helped, even though it was polymer rather than metal. The rifle was very light in CO2 configuration, dunno about the new HPA version.

Stoeger Atac Suppressor
Coypu Hunter replied to jordyhoppy96's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I have a 16 fpe one in .22. If I could hit anything with it, it'd be lethal! Mine's a bitch to cock -- you need arms like Popeye. Yours is probably a lot easier since it's 12 fpe. The Stoeger trigger is lousy. I've modified mine so it now has a fairly short single stage with a predictable let-off. So far I've managed to print a 20mm group at 35 yards, with JSB Exact Express pellets, I think they were. Lock time seems quite long, so I'm finding lighter pellets to be more accurate. Still a long way to go until I can shoot it well, though, and 20mm might be as good as it gets. -
That's all very well, but he also said "cheap." How many cheap PCPs have you come across? Or scuba tanks? Or pumps? Nah, get a springer, HW95 will do, zero at at your normal shooting distance and practise until you can hit a one-inch target every time. Google "artillery hold for air rifles" and you'll learn how to hold the rifle to achieve best results.

Adjusting Optics For Pellet Change
Coypu Hunter replied to Muzzie's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Yup, JSB Exact Heavies are good, as are Bisley Magnums, but that's in a FAC HW97K. They might be crap in your rifle, you'll have to experiment. -
Nope. Avion is French for aeroplane, and you won't have much luck shooting those. Avian comes from avis, which means bird in Latin. As others have said, you need to test pellets to find your rifle's favourite, then practise until you can hit a one-inch kill zone at your normal hunting ranges. Otherwise, your permission will come to an abrupt end when the landowner or one of his guests sees a wounded rabbit running past, screaming and bleeding.

What Pellet For Hw97Kt
Coypu Hunter replied to Si1274's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
JSB Exact Heavies 4.52 or Bisley Magnums if it's FAC. Weihrauch F&T Specials or AA Diabolo Fields 4.51 if it's sub-12 fpe. But that's just my rifle. If you're lucky, one of the pellets mentioned will suit your rifle -- but you'll still need to experiment a bit to find out which, especially if you're thinking of taking wabbits at 45 yards. You'll need to practise a lot, too! -
97Kt From Sfs And Tune How Much
Coypu Hunter replied to Si1274's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Why don't you email SFS and ask them? They will also give you an idea of waiting times for tuning at the moment. Tony Wall responds pretty quickly to emails.
