Ooty, those lurchers with guarding ability, what breeding are they? Is it first cross collie or collie cross to collie cross?
With so many lurchers stolen, guarding ability is very useful.
Interesting post. My Australian cattle dog cross has an inbred instinct to get behind cattle and move them, by heeling if necessary. I have no stock or cause to work them so I discourage it. Also I would not have a clue how to refine her instincts to make a useful working dog, but I am sure it could be done in the right hands.
It is good to hear about versatile dogs, probably many of the original lurchers had such a dual role.
Anybody else know anything about standard schnauzers? Not the usual miniatures. What are they like training and guarding wise,as well as bushing, ratting etc?
Hi Skycat, thanks for putting the pictures on. I really enjoyed the article in Countrymans, please keep us informed about the progress, and details about temperament, characteristics etc.
She is a lovely pup.
Nice to see all the other Dales as well.
Hi, just wondering, a while ago there were pups for sale, half cross Greyhound, working type or Redline Airedale. Does anyone know how they are progressing?
How have they turned out size, temperament and performance wise?
Great looking dogs! Their condition is a credit to you. Are you sure the Greyhound Whippet is a straight cross? Not doubting you but it looks very powerful and thick coated for such a cross.
The cattle dog can make a good cross. They are bright and very loyal. They can be protective, which I think is a good thing if within sensible limits.
Mine has a high prey drive but is very biddable and willing to please.
Be firm and consistent when training it and constantly expose it to new people and situations, more so than with most breeds.
Make sure the Cattle dog is sane and steady, socialise the pups extremely well, both with other dogs and with people and different situations. Then socialise them some more . Depending on the size of the bitch some of the pups may be a little small and heavily boned but the second cross could be awesome.
They are very loyal, can be over protective if not well socialised, and tough. I have found my bitch to be very willing to please and has a strong prey drive.
The right dog put over a good greyhound could produce good stuff if properly entered.
Has anyone out there taken them further? Either 3/4 or 5/8 cross?
