  1. Nice write up Ian . The farmer seems to trust you now . Some are hard work .
  2. Me and my Mrs Foster , well my Mrs does all the work . To anyone who says that we do it for the money, the honest answer is my wife does it for her job . But she loves doing it . And she earns a bit of money, so what ? Some of these kids are so damaged, they are up all night , wreck your house , your car . You might have to lock the fridge and your food away , you can’t have a drink , because it could be a behavioural trigger . If people weren’t payed then there would be even fewer people fostering and there aren’t enough as it is . I know people who go into it in a big way , get a big house ,
  3. Err because she was hiding? It has taken the whole resources of the FBI to track her down .
  4. I can just see me explaining to my wife about the contents of the parcel that arrived. “ No honestly love it’s to keep the Tawny owls away “!!
  5. I’ve tried radios, cds hanging in branches, strip lighting connected to the fence wire , you name it , haven’t tried the clothing thing though . Talking to other keepers and they all reckon it’s a territorial thing with Tawny owls , all of a sudden there are masses of poults dumped on their patch , but he killing tends to stop after a day or so . That’s been my experience too .
  6. No Foxes last night, but the birds were startled and spooked by a Tawny owl , on checking the pen this morning I found a dead poult which had been killed by an owl .
  7. I saw the Netflix series on this and some of the girls were as young as 12 and 14 , even the older ones were groomed and abused and exploited . By some sick , evil fucks . Now this is going to be very interesting, because if she manages to not get murdered or “suicided “ before trial there are going to be a lot of very powerful and influential people implicated in this sordid mess . She is looking a life in prison for each of the six or seven charges she has levelled against her . She is going to want to do a deal for the information she has , but because of the shit storm caused by
  8. Nothing but respect for the tradesmen of yesteryear. I live near Gloucester and I have a look at the cathedral now and then not because I’m religious or a Harry Potter fan ( hogwarts was filmed there) but to marvel at the stone masonry, and wonder how the hell they got the stone up without cherry pickers and modern scaffolding and cranes .
  9. First lot of birds arrived today , and very nice they look too . Nice even size , well feathered and generally a picture of health . Looks like they are eating and drinking plenty so it’s up to me now to keep them that way . something I’ve got in the habit of for that last few years is spending the first couple of nights in my truck , parked up by the pen . I have a sit and watch till dark and then a bit of a scan with the thermal for a while and then recline the seat and try and sleep . What has happened in the past is the birds aren’t up to roost yet and tuck up on the wire
  10. I know a couple who live on the side of a hill overlooking Gloucester. You would think if they got flooded then the rest of us would be in real trouble, but they got flooded. I 2007 when we had the big floods water started streaming down the hill , twigs and debris gathered and started to make a bit of a dam , then when it got really big it burst open and whoosh straight through their house .
  11. Good grief, what a waste. I hope In that case he’s a steam train enthusiast .
  12. I know where you are coming from , the ground I do most of my shooting is in the head of a valley and the wind can change in an instant, it can be like a vortex. And it’s always when the wind is on your neck that they tend to show themselves and then wind you . I avoid any strong soap or deodorant if I’m going shooting, but I’m not hardcore enough to go all sausage dog . It might well give you a second or two . The yanks have all this scent masking spray and they reckon it works .
  13. Typical Will Ferrell nonsense.... I loved it . ????
  14. My Mrs is a cleaning nut . I reckon if I sat still long enough, I’d get shoved in the washing machine. I’ve got coats that I avoid washing but it’s nothing to do with scent , it’s just I find the more you wash a new coat it loses it’s waterproof qualities. I had wax coats that never got washed ...ever . As long as the winds not on your neck , I’m sure it doesn’t make much difference . I can’t stand the smell of fox on my hands and have taken to wearing latex gloves when I pick them up . A well known member of THL came foxing with me one night and was horrified whe
  15. Well done boys , a job well done . Nice when a plan comes together. I had a sit out tonight, and never saw a fox . But it was a warm and pleasant evening and I saw plenty of other animals and birds .
  16. I wonder if the landowner spoke to the owner of the quarry/ ponds and written permission was granted for you to carry out a cull . Otherwise , just shoot them when they are on his land . I can’t see an issue with the license, they are causing a real problem and need to be dealt with . In order for you to stay within the law , make some attempt to scare them off first . From my own experience though ,culling is best carried away from the publics gaze . Twitchers and walkers could cause problems and also you need to be sensitive to public perception of what’s going on . But I don’t
  17. Is there a lake or pond on the farm where they stay ? If you shoot a couple now they might just disappear for good because they are about to moult and when they do they can’t fly . Alternatively wait until they moult then shoot them on the water provided it’s safe . I know it’s not sporting but it’s pest control and I’ve killed a lot like that . Canada geese are a very real pest and you can shoot them any time of the year .
  18. A great read Ian . You come across foxes like that now and then . Some people like football or fishing or drinking. But for me there is no greater pass time than the pursuit of a truly worthy opponent . I am about to enter my busy foxing time when my birds go to wood . I could honestly do without a clever one now .
  19. I used to teach my daughter to shoot with subs up the skeet club and they are easy on the shoulder, but not much quieter and you have to increase your lead by a good margin too . My advice, don’t bother with the subs unless noise disturbance is a real factor.
  20. I’m not a fan of shooting prone for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. Most of my shooting is done from a vehicle, which provides a stable, elevated shooting platform. A lot of the guys I know who do a fair bit have flat , platforms mounted to the roof of their pickups and shoot with either a bag or bipod . Shooting prone is ok if you have a good vantage point and no little bits of vegetation in the way of your bullet .
  21. I hope for your sake it stays that way . We had rabbits here in good numbers and I could regularly harvest 20/30 in no time with a quad and 22lr . If I did that now I don’t think the population could take it .
  22. I started to watch something called the Luminaries on the BBC iplayer , is got about 10 minutes in and there is an Asian leading male character in a period costume drama . I hit the off button straight away . Then I saw an advert for a new adaptation of Charles Dickens “David Copperfield” . Guess what colour he was ? You know it’s not that they are Asian or Black or whatever colour that I object to . It’s the fact that I can see the left wing media are deliberately trying to brainwash us . I find it patronising and insulting , and ultimately unwatchable.
