  1. Oh dear , I don’t come on here to get shirty or personal. I enjoy sharing my shooting experiences and reading others experiences. All I’m doing is trying to shoot a difficult fox , for some friends of friends who are losing poultry on a smallholding . They own the paddock and as far as I’m aware I’ve got permission to be there . They don’t own the fields around them . The neighbours don’t want foxes shot because they hunt , but they understand that it is taking their birds and are aware of my presence. It seems that the guy who shoots on their ground just turned up last night , and
  2. At last someone who knows what they are doing . Don’t forget a hard hat and high vis vest for your risk assessment.
  3. Yeah but why use only one paragraph when you can use four ?
  4. I feel as though I’ve spent my entire adult life stumbling around in the dark . Thanks Alsone for guiding me through this latest misadventure. I prostrate myself at your fountain of common sense and knowledge which has before now not been available to me .
  5. Another trip to get on terms with slinky 2 . Another waste of time . The problem is I’ve basically got one paddock to shoot it in and it is a very spooked fox . And tonight I found out why . I was waiting with the shotgun, then when it got too dark I switched to the thermal and digisight on my .223 . I heard a vehicle turn up in the field next to the paddock, a lamp shone around followed by the crack of what I would guess was a 17hmr . The guy with the rimfire had a few more shots at I’m guessing rabbits. I didn’t see him pick anything up or even shoot anything, I witnessed the whole sorry sh
  6. Thanks for that mate , I’d forgotten ?
  7. I had the same problem. I was at the midland game fair a couple of years ago and saw the guys from best fox calls on their stand and said I had problems downloading the calls and he just gave me an SD card with loads of calls on ( pheasant distress) was the one I wanted . But if you send them an SD card they will do one for you .
  8. Err , cos I like to be dry . Nowt worse than a wet rifle / digisight/ thermal. ?
  9. Thanks for your words of wisdom, your sage advice is valued by us all . ?
  10. Full of renewed hope and optimism I arrived at the small holding to finish a job that has been dragging on longer than is should have . I had my plan of where I was going to hide , this time with a shotgun. By the time I got there the owner had already closed the birds in . The wind had picked up and was in my favour.... things were looking good . I waited until about 10.30 and I could no longer see to shoot . I switched over to thermal and rifle set up and soon spotted a fox quartering a paddock like a spaniel I tried to stop it with a whistle and then a squeak but it just
  11. I thought about writing an article too . But I have always kept my dog work to myself, and in this day and age I don’t want to put myself out there . Fair play to those that do though. I’ve always enjoyed reading DHs work and he has been a great ambassador for the sport . In fact through his articles and his opinions, I have come to form my own standards. I hope that whatever is ailing him soon passes and he carry’s on . I wish him well .
  12. Mr H cut it down to 10 copies a year . I think he was struggling to get content . I’ve subscribed for years . But I was finding that it was getting left unread , I kept subscribing out of a sense of loyalty but when the last reminder came through I didn’t send the cheque off . I aught to email him with an apology/ explanation because I liked the old boy .... I will get around to it ,
  13. 32g 4s is the best I’ve got . I think the range I will be 28 g 7s would probably do .
  14. Yes I’m back out tonight with my shotgun. I’m really hoping to post a picture of it’s remains . I hope things get more interesting for you soon . I hope my shenanigans keep you entertained until then . ATB
  15. Hilux , Hilux, Hilux. I know they are expensive, but you get what you pay for , and they hold their money better. If you’re going to splash out , splash out properly . I don’t know anyone who has regretted buying one .
  16. Don’t worry about the spelling mate , just keep posting, I know what you mean to say . Some of the sharpest people I know can’t spell for shit . My mrs is dyslexic, and believe me there’s no flies on her ?
  17. Well in spite of my best efforts to bring the two cubs to book in the traps they for some reason played hard to get . I tried pigeon , rabbit , squirrel , but nothing tempted them . I thought they may have gone or been moved . So last night I went out with the sole purpose, to get the cubs . The plan was a simple one , set up the icotec , put on rabbit distress, and sit back . The melancholy sound of the of the caller echoed out across the field towards the cubs hideout , and I settled in . I decided to leave the sticks in the truck and shoot prone as there wasn’t much cover . As d
  18. Usually I rock up , get the rifle out , see the fox , wait for it to stop moving and shoot it . Occasionally things don’t work out like that , these are the memorable foxes . I’m kind of enjoying the challenge. I think if it was easy I’d soon get bored of it . I had a vixen last year that gave me the runaround, I was punching the air when I caught up with her .
  19. I don’t think it saw me the first night , it just didn’t stop . It was the same last night , it literally pinged me and ran off . I am building a bit of a picture of what it’s doing now . Hopefully next visit will be successful.
  20. Well I arrived and scattered the tin of dog food around the paddock and tucked myself behind a bush at the top of the flood bank . As the light faded I stood , gun at the ready on the sticks , safety off . I felt a little bit like a Heron at the waters edge waiting for a little fish to swim past , I was focused and motionless, this fox was dead meat . I had the script all planned out . The fox enters the field via the gate , and runs across the paddock left to right , but smells the dog food , stops to investigate, bang !!!! Well needless to say the fox didn’t read his role in the
