I’ve shot foxes in the past that spin around and make a dash for it . When you pick them up there is a hole in its rib cage you could put your fist in , and you think how the hell did you not drop on the spot . The 50grain Vmax bullets I use in my . 223 are doing 3800fps going by data not a chronograph and I rekon they are pushing in excess of that , rarely produce runners and there is rarely a hole . All the runners I’ve had always have visible exit wounds which means there is less of the bullets energy creating that shock , and that in my opinion is what drops them on the sp

Anyone going to the game fair ?
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I agree with all your points . I think the last time I went to the CLA it was at Highclere , and it was vast , you need three days to get around all of it . And no deals to be had , having said that I always used to rekon that you went to the Midland for deals , because it was the last big show and they wanted to shift their stock . However it was just nice to back to normal, no masks and looking at guns ….. lots of guns . And best of all no Mrs in tow , because if she had been I’d of spent half the day in the craft tent or in the Joules tent , and that is never a good place . -
He was over the moon . It’s given me a confidence boost in him ? No one wants a bad shot helping them . It’s not all that easy shooting from a high seat . It’s not like shooting off a bipod , so he pulled off a good shot at about 100 meters . ps . We want the hear all about your miss ?

There is a young chap , called Adam who helps me out , he’s keen as mustard and always up for some foxing. He is more of a dog lad really although he knows his way around a shotgun and 22lr , centerfires are new to him . He has accompanied me on my nocturnal fox missions and his job is spotting with my thermal and gates , I drive he spots , then i shoot. I feel a bit mean sometimes doing all the shooting, but I’m not playing. I want them dead and misses are not tolerated. If I miss that’s one thing if someone else misses I get a bit salty to say the least , I might not say anything but the ten

Anyone going to the game fair ?
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I’m afraid getting money off the shoot is difficult. What I need is a rich foreign boss , who doesn’t mind splashing the cash . Everything here is on a budget, they do spend money on vehicles and just lately they have kitted out a game processing room , so who knows ? -
Anyone going to the game fair ?
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I tried to justify the outlay . I thought “how many more foxes is this going to put in the plastic bin I keep in the mule . My answer was not many . If I’m able to deal effectively with the foxes I’m seeing at ranges up to 200meters and once 235 meters , with my digisight , why spend all that money? Don’t get me wrong , if I had lots of money to throw around I’d get one tomorrow. I’ve been out with a pulsar Xp50 and was seriously impressed. Who knows I might be tempted, technology in this area seems to be moving fast . I probably will get one but I’m not in a hurry. I think a thermal spotter a -
Anyone going to the game fair ?

Well I’ve been and come back . Had a good day , plenty to see . Lots of stalls , but to be honest, there are only so many coats and shirts and trousers and boots you can have . The good thing was , I was able to try all of the pulsar thermal and Yukon and infiray and many other thermal and digital scopes . What it has done has made me feel a lot better about the kit I’ve got . It didn’t make me want to rush out and buy the new model . What I’ve got is good enough for me for the moment. -
Whatever you boys are up to , may your bullets fly straight, may you give enough lead and let your lines be tight . And if you are going to the game fair I will see you in the beer tent . I’ll have a pint of cider ?

This thread is unusually quiet? Well we had one field of barley cut and it yielded nothing the first night . Then yesterday they quickly cut and gathered three silage fields . I was looking forward to an early night but the prospect of an easy fox was too much . After checking the pens I settled down to a twilight vigil. Nothing showed. I did a couple of laps of the cut fields and decided to call it a night at about 11.30pm . However on the way back to the farm to put the mule away I passed the cut barley field that still has the bales left out . Even over the sound of the mule engine which is

The Swedes did what they had to do to survive. Same as our expeditionary force that evacuated Dunkirk . ??

Yes , that’s what you call them , “ dust devils “.?

Saw something similar yesterday. It was more of a vortex that was visible because it was full of dust and barley straw . It’s all this hot air creating them , I’ve seen a few , but not strong enough to lift or flatten anything significant .

Anyone going to the game fair ?
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well I will be easy to spot then , I will be the only one “not” wearing real tree . I’m leaving the Mrs at home and going with a pal . I might even have a sneaky 1/2 -
The game fair isn’t too far from me this year , Ragley hall in Warwickshire . I’ve got a free ticket , so I’m off on Saturday , bad weather forecast so might be a quiet which will suit me . I’m just going to make a bee line for gunmakers row and a bit of time on fisherman’s row . Might be a good chance to stock up on stuff that I probably never even knew I needed .

We have a saying in England “ people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones “ ,( google it KimE) . Sweden remained neutral, ignored the moral issues and played both sides for profit , having said that when Sweden could see which way the war was going in 1945 , bravely allowed the allies to use its airbases, thanks for that .

Bullet availability problems
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It’s the same panic buying that saw me reduced to wiping my arse on a doc leaf . -
I was offered an Italian WW2 tank , one forward gear five reverse………I’ll get my coat .

Bullet availability problems

Well done Si . As I went around tonight they had the comine out cutting barley. I will have a look tomorrow night. There is however a 20 acre field of barley waiting to be cut, that belongs to the estate but isn’t really close to the shoot . It’s like the Serengeti up there , I am expecting one or two foxes from there . Can’t wait ? -
Bullet availability problems

I’ve got the Varminators from Spud 1967 . They took one day longer delivery than Bushwear , not a big deal though . I’ve only had hollow points once before and they were factory loaded Hornady in .223 . I’ve always used soft point or Ballistic tips . I’ve honestly really loved the 70 grn Sierra Blitzkings but I can’t get them . Who knows this might be the beginning of of me using hollow points ? -

Bullet availability problems

Opinions are like arse holes … everyone’s got one . I , unlike you , try and keep my barrels clean . I boresnake after every outing when I take a shot and give the barrel a proper clean every 20-30 rounds . So moly coating is a waste for me . They look good though. I think I might christen them “ the Black Death “.? -
Aw Ben , I didn’t realise you were dyslexic.

I’d just like to add that actually, I don’t like the Italians……. Football, nuf said ?

I’d just like to add that actually, I don’t like the Germans either. Too many bad experiences with towels and sun loungers.

I’d just like to add that actually, I don’t like the French , “ Cheese eating surrender monkeys “.
