Bargain to be had there, i bet you don't get much per hour for making that one! Seems to be the problem with all hand made stuff hard to make a living at it, folk just don't want to pay the extra.....get it on the internet from China for less than the cost of materials to make the same thing, dosn't give much margin for labor cost! Cheers Wullz, it certainly makes short work of roots and grubbing up stones etc, a bit of a beast rely, half an hour of hacking with it and you know about your shoulder muscles! After an angle grinder a welder is the most handy tool in my shop. Easy to teach yourself, main thing is the cleaner you grind the steel you are working on the better weld you will get and make sure you have a clean bit for the earth clamp on your work. After that just start on a pile of scrap and learn what setting is best for what thickness. Better a tad hot if you aren't sure, crank it down if it starts to burn -
Sharpening The Edge, Of A Spade Head ?

Totally agree, if i only had one power tool it would be an angle grinder. Get a zincronium flap disc for it, will quickly sharpen any steel. Fit a wire cup brush and clean rust off most things. A diamond disc and cut stone A carbide disk cut & grind metal. A wood carving blade The list goes on. In short go and buy a 115mm angle grinder! I had a cheap £12 Woolies one did for years, now have at leas 7 assorted makes and sizes. Saying that if your spade is getting a blunt edge, would say you need to invest in a decent quality spade as said above they should more or -

Had this on a previous thread http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/335361-chelsea-hoe-with-welder-anglegrinder/ but thought i would add it here as it is kind of following a theme. Also landy spring/ welder work. -
Nothing wrong with that chief.

Nice one Slipery weasel, good to see folks making things with their kids. Good action shot too. "No plans and just what I had lying around the place". Sounds like most of the stuff i make!

Thanks Skycat. That's a nice looking dog on your Avatar picture. I used to have deer hound Colly lurcher looked very similar, best dog i ever had smart & fast.

I had never welded but always wanted to learn so took the plunge and bought a welder, taught myself how to weld sticking scrap metal together into various prehistoric beasts. Here is one of the more useful ones i made years ago- a boot brush for the front door.

Jigs are always a good idea for accuracy, sometimes takes more time to make a jig than to do the job but time worthwhile spent IMO.

Time of year for splitting up clumps of bulbs now the flowers have gone by and spread them around. I plant a lot along the roadside and in other areas of rough old grass, did it with a spade last year but seemed to take more effort than it should cutting through many years layers of tough grass. Had the bright idea to make up a tool specific for the job, consists of a chunk of landy leaf spring, cutting of trampoline leg and a broken wooden grass guide off my ancient bar mower. Lashed together in a hurry, so not made for it's looks but to be used, took half an hour at most. Used it all aft -
Yep never really grew up, just a big kid at heart!

That's what it's all about live & learn, and strive to better next time. Saying that they don't look that bad Chief, could finish up the bevels with a hand file? Actually i prefer a tool that doesn't look like a show piece, you can use it the way it is meant to be used (and some ways it isn't) and not worry about messing up the shiny finish. If you chip the blade, big deal, just lash it back on the grinder again.

Well it works, better than i ever imagined. And better still i fit on it!!!!!

Ha I like that.

Went a walk along the beach a couple of Sunday mornings back, always a bit depressing all the rubbish that has washed up, sometimes gather it up and burn it but came up with another idea for it- make sculptures! Went back with a hammer and a pocket full of nails the next week................... People seem to enjoy it as there is signs of people having been there for a look even though it is a fairly remote place, a few things been added since. It's definitely a gentleman as can be seen by the strategically placed fire extinguisher nozzle! Probably do some more in the f

Simple buffer made up from an old headstock off something, can't remember what, old 3/4 hp? motor, socket switch, sectional V-belt. Basic but very handy, lashed together in a hurry, always intended refining it a bit and making it more compact but never got round to it. Cloth buffer on one side, wire wheel on other, far more power than a bench grinder. Used most days. -
Possibly but i have stayed out of this one, his own design and all his own work. Should be ok though as it is a plastic chair with the legs cut off, they are pretty indestructible, don't ever remember one breaking in the school dining hall and they got a lot of abuse there! If he brakes it, it will be a good learning curve, and he can design some reinforcement.
