  1. Even a bent barrel would produce a group. The fact it is erratic points more to movement of some kind, or the already stated clipping. Is the barrel touching anything? Something in the shroud if you have one?
  2. I don't thik Theoben were over priced actually. Recently they have been expensive due to the import of parts machined in the USA that could have been made here for 1/3rd of the price - but the new owner moved all the machining to America and just starved Theoben UK into submission. Theobens since 2006 aren't real Theobens anyway. Proper Theobens were very well built and very competitively riced. I have a Scirocco Grand Prix from 1985 and it is still posting 30 yard, one hole groups with no more than a bit of a top up ONCEin its life because it dropped to 10.6 ft-lbs. It runs really happily
  3. Venom what? Birmingham Webley? Glad you are pleased with it, sounds like a good un.
  4. Or the sight is creeping. Sounds like the Piled Arms logo of BSA (3 guns in an upright 'tripod' stance with Birmingham Small Arms written around it - or not. Possibly BSA underneath, depending on age) Scope with a deer sounds like Simmonds - head of a stag? If the scope is creeping you would feel a pretty rough recoil at each shot. A nice smooth shooting springer doesn't impart as much shock to the system.
  5. He isn't, he is a Brit who is trying to get US citizenship. At the moment he is on a long term visa only, he may have got accepted by now, I don't know. There are already several custom producers of parts for Rapids. The new Chippy Smith blocks are available, valves, hammers, hammer pips, springs and trigger cartridges are available - Chambers can supply barrels, as can BSA (good barrels too). Many Rapids are pretty customised now anyway - and all the better for it. Those who have the ticket can get phenomenal air efficiency from the Rapid - I have a friend who is getting 30 shots at 30ft-
  6. No they won't because they only went bust in the UK, not the USA. I have already said it elsewhere, but Theoben UK only assembled the already US made parts ofr the last 2 years. Every Theoben rifle for 2 years was made in the USA and sent over in bits, because there is no import duty on parts, but there is on assembled rifles. Martin Rutherford owns Theoben and is still trading as Theoben in the US, he also owns Rapid Air Weapons, again in the USA. He is trying for US citizenship. Theoben UK was merely used as a tax sink- they made losses because the dirctor took out more than they made. I
  7. New, probably not, unless he can find one in a shop smewhere that hasn't already been snapped up. From the USA, no problem, production never stopped over there - be more expensive though. That is why the UK was closed, we are just a nuisance market for most makers. USA shooters are happy to stump $1800 for a Rapid (£1100 ) and we were complaining about them at £750. Used Rapids will become much more sought after and like you, people will hang on to them, so to prize them out of peoples hands you will have to pay more. Supply and demand - a legendary rifle, thats for sure. Glad my .20, Bu
  8. nIKON pROSTAFF 4-12X40, ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON - but IT WON'T HAVE MILDOTS, IT HAS A BALLISTIC RETICULE FOR DROP OFF Ooops - soory, damned buttons too small! 50mm objective is a disadvantage as it narrows the depth of field, unless you then have adj obj, which is a right fiddle faddell in the field. Good lenses do not need to be 50mm for light transmission - the 3-9x40 or 4-12x40 prostaff will beat many much more expensive scopes with 50mm front lens for light transmission. Light and compact. I wouldn't go for 30mm tube from preference either. Again, it narrows the depth of field and makes
  9. Some Theoben Rapids of various models on racks in dealers around the country. They are being snapped up at a rate of knots though - I know one shop sold out all his Theoben stock in two days following the announcement. I wouldn't give up on the rifles just because the owner has run away to America (where Theoben are still going strong and selling their rifles starting at $1800)
  10. Ancient news and not all that accurate either. Yes, it may be that shops won't deal with them, but more likley because they demanded payment for rifles and dnd't extend dealer credit. You won't get a shop owner telling you - "I won't stock them because I can't afford to" now will you? So they make up a reason. There was one girl who was pretty undiplomatic on the phone, but that was soon dealt with. Diane took over that role herself and was very, very good. I never had any problems with them and neither has anyone I know. I had plenty of very good service from them. I have 5 Theoben rifles
  11. Nobody CAN buy it, because the name isn't up for sale. They have not gone bust, they have been closed - completely different thing. Martin Rutherford in the USA oens the name and closed th ecompany - but he still owns the name and that of Rapid Air Weapons. Theoben, if it resurfaces, will be from the USA under his ownership. For the last 2 years every new gun sold here was machined in the US and assembled here. They made nothing at Theoben Cambs. Even the small items were made by local precision engineering companies for them. Framed out work. Older rifles are absolutely fantastic and
  12. The only thing to be cautious of - is getting too much permission, so that you are then spread too thin. Get a couple of good ones and really look after them. Works the best. If you can't round them all on a regular basis, they soon start to get hived off elsewhere.
  13. Agility is just the "townies" version of working to stock. It is only an arena method of stretching the dogs brain - if they can apply their brain to learn the agility ropes, they will happily take to work in the fields. It is the same instinct, just channelled differently - both require strong pack relationship. The dog is working for the pack leader, in the arena that is the handler, but the brain process is the same.
  14. Depends on the porting. This is why Rapids are so popular with FAC chaps. With a 16.5" barrel a .20 cal will happily do 30ft-lbs and be spot on for accuracy - 8mm groups at 65 yards. It isn't just the barrel, it is the prechamber volume, the transfer port size (and shape!) the valve shape,. There is more to it than just the barrel. This is another reason why Rapids are so popular for this, changing the transfer port size, shape, the valve stem length and prechamber size is very easy. I know of at least one Rapid in .22 that is doing +ft-lbs, but it is going supersonic to do it, so accuracy is
  15. Actually I agree with the concept and they are better in areas where it will affect few people. the commercial prosecution of the fish stocks is relentless and not just to provide us with food otherwise they wouldn't 'upgrade' their catch, use blinders and all the other shenanigans they get up to. In addition to the MCZs, we need the Golden Mile as soon as possible, together with NTZs. We also need ONE cohesive fisheries policy across all British Isles, not one rule one side of the Bristol Channel and boats from the other side fishing to a different set of rules on the same grounds. Th
  16. Sounds like you are holding it too tight. At 10 yards, where is the pellet landing? It should be just a tad low. 13 yards - 16 yards spot on. This will depend on your zero range. Can you put up a large witness screen behind the target board, just so you can see where the fall of shot is? Work it out from there - are you altering the zoom when changing range? If so DON'T! Zoom scopes, ESPECIALLY CHEAPER ONES, will alter zero when the zoom changes except on multiples of the same magnification factor. eg 3-9 power scope. Zero on 6x and it should work fine on 3x - but not necessarily on
  17. That is exactly the plan, they have been making R.A.W. (Rapid Air Weapons) on the new Dawson block for several years, the owner of Theoben, Martin Rutherford, also owns RAW and their new rifle (TM1000) is fabulous. All PCP, no gas rams.
  18. US side of Theoben LET the UK side go down - it was a tactical move.
  19. I wont be using it for rats Ghillies, only rabbits and to be honest i havent found a permission yet where ive shot (or even seen) 50 rabbits in one night so it should be plenty. Sorry paulus im not interested in a .20cal but if you get your hands on a .22 i might be interested Thanks Andy and btw you did a great job on Wurz's , very nice to shoot ATB Adam You are missing a trick then. .20 cal Rapid is one of the finest rifles out there, especially at FAC levels. Mine is turned down to 20ft-lbs to get the extra shots out of a fill, but it will happily turn up to 29ft-
  20. I don't think this is the last we shall hear of the Theoben name somehow. Yes this company has been wound up, that is not the same thing as disappearing. The drawings and knowledge are still out there. I am sure there will be some custom rifle makers queing up for parts at the sale!
  21. That is half the problem. Email direct from Matin Rutherford, the owner of Theoben who is in the USA (but he hasn't got citizenship yet an dhis visa runs out soon!) The news is sadly true; the company has been struggling for some time and never recovered from the move into its newer premises along with the still global economic situation. Bit more to it than that. USA side taking out more than the company was making......Rapid Air Weapons is the USA arm. Nice looking target style rifles.
  22. Been on the cards - I thought it was going to happen and the end of August. They have managed to hang on for a couple of months. Daft thing is, they have a strong order book.
  23. Great rifle and guess what - that Tasco of that vintage is better than the modern Nikko 4x40, stick with what you have and just learn it. What are they like? Mine I bought new in 1985 and I still have it and it still shoots perfectly well. Mine has a Nikko on it! A bentley 4x32 and it works happily at normal ranges.
  24. I have 4 Theobens - they are brilliant. They shoot just fine in any position - hold sensitive? I suppose it depends how you hold a rifle but anyone used to just shooting wil get on fine. If you can shoot running deer or free standing shots at under 70 yards then you'll be fine with it, just lift and shoot.
