  1. I tried some subsonic on my 20 gauge last week too test and all I got was a bit of a pop and whistle hell of difference certainly not silent but I bet the sound didn't carry far at all
  2. Your best bet would be to find some one too give you an hour of there time in the day time just showing you basics of running out and picking up the net in a field some where the rest will be experience as you go
  3. Yea you can't beat it I walked round new farm today for about 4 miles and didn't even get the ferret out the box because I couldn't find hole worth trying but it's just a privilege too be out there
  4. I am sure your dog will do fine just don't give it any thing too challenging lamp wise too start with as said above sure it will hold on tighter next time. Wish you all the best with it
  5. With mine the penny just dropped that is he twigged if he showed me the hole as a rule I could show him the rabbit. I can remember the first time like yesterday even though it has too be 27 years ago I could show the exact place in the hedge now. So I think if you can bolt rabbits in front of her and show her plenty of action the penny will drop and maybe you can read her marking signals better
  6. The more I think about it if I could have a dog just for ferreting I would go for a terrier admittedly they are not as versatile as a small lurcher but they will handle the thickest of cover better than any small lurcher simply because they have the build for it. They will miss the odd bolter that gets by the nets but a good dog will simply put the rabbit to ground again. It will obviously be less likely too bolt second time around so you need too be prepared too dig but when it comes too efficiency and not missing much they are the way too go.
  7. Hope I am as active at 62 good too hear
  8. One thing I come across when I read up on these dogs is there very biddable and make good ferreting, bushing dogs. When the time comes for my cocker too enter the pearly gates wife permitting one may be on the list He has a good few years left in him yet though
  9. I don't know that breed but pretty sure as long as you started them as pups they would come good
  10. Best thing I had done too mine he turned from a greasy sex mad loony into a nice playful all most even nice smelling chap
  11. My best ferreting dog was a JR he wouldn't catch bolting rabbits unless he was close by as they bolted. But he would work any thickness of cover and any terrain and put them too ground. Then If I couldn't find him I would shout where are you boy and he would give a very quiet woof as he seemed too know quietness was key. Awesome little fella
  12. You could try that ferret formula or some thing like it. They will be so busy licking your hand and you can go from there. Worth a try and you wont end up on youtube when the neighbour see's you pissing over your ferret
  13. Yea and if you don't use guns or a dog even easier. As what harm can you do with a ferret and and few nets. I also mention at worst it will be just me and some times my two daughters when I bribe them to come so they don't expect a mob of blokes turning up. Mind you I would love too have a ferreting dog like the old days bit of a struggle with out I also have Country Cover insurance which cost 20 quid so I wave my certificate about at least it helps prove you slightly responsable
  14. Having her a bit wary and keeping out the way of the ferrets is a good thing. Less chance of her being nipped and one day retaliating. My little Russell would cover a hole in the hedge and when the ferret came out he would be out the hedge in a jiffy rather than be in a confined space with a ferret which was fine. He had a nice healthy respect for them but wouldnt think twice going toe to toe with a fox in the old days of course
  15. kizzy but I did call my first terrier moses I don't think he ever for gave me
  16. you got that right. Sounds like he peppered one of them just as well for him he didn't kill him though doubt he would walk free if he had even if he was right too do so
  17. Sounds like they have a good home now just get a bigger hutch sorted. Not sure about the dog food mine have dried ferret food and rabbit when I get it. But they do enjoy a dog biscuit as a treat
  18. Yea they love too come out. This is jeff having a run I might sod the ferreting and taking him lamping instead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_hMixhwEqI
  19. Ok cheers for the info I will keep my eyes open
  20. I don't know my mushrooms very well so try and stick too the field mushrooms. Just walked a few fields and didn't see any thing yet
  21. Mine love toys it keep them busy contantly changing over old cerial boxes and egg box s etc for them. They love an old welly too dig into as well. I change things around so they don't get bored. I have too be careful what I do rig up though as my hob has a death wish so things need too be very safe. Any boxes that go into the recycling go too the ferrets first apart from any thing like washing powder boxes and that. One goes in the box and digs and the other jumps up and down on top of it funny as hell
  22. Any tips on finding some field mushrooms and is the about the time of year too be looking ? I remember as a kid horses fields were good is that true ? I have noticed they do seem too come and go
  23. She was great her best night as I remember was 21 but that was one night I was just greedy. She thought nothing of storming up the inside of hedge after a rabbit when they thought they were home and dry when we were lamping
