Another Day Out With The Pups Getting Ready For Next Year
MickyB replied to Bigpaws's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Nice looking dogs there lad, looks like a nice walk too, atb -
As above mate stop hunting and go back to basic training long walks reinforce recall with big rewards when you tell it "here" and it comes reward it and let it go off again don't leash every time, I found with my dog if it thought it would then be restrained what's the point in coming back? Her recalls pretty good now but the second time I went lamping we hopped a fence and she decided to do couple laps of the field to my embarrasment as I was just telling my mate how good she's been doing! I'm sure there's others with more experience that know why its doing it, atb pal I hope you sort it Mic

Never thought of using one for a lurcher I might have a go be good to mess about with outof season
-
Have you built up his fitness? I'd work on that for a couple week and then get back out there pal
-
Raw bones are fine, cooked are dangerous because they can dry up and splinter
-
have you ever owned a dog that can do all the above ?.....and if so what was all the quarry you wished it to do ? All pre ban of course Yes mate, Scooby had the lot, except red deer. Both day and night. I don't really bother with foxes (never needed to) so my opinion of an all-rounder would be very different to the next man's I guess. The lurcher i have now i would class as an all-rounder too, but there's a few i need to tick off the list before he gets there fully, though he has caught a wide variety of tackle, and travelled extensively all over the Uk and Ireland and onto some Islands too
-
That's a good point I think lurchers are expected to do a lot more than other types of dog, if it works for you and does what you want it to I wouldn't care what anyone else's idea of an all rounder is.
-
IMO there is no true all rounder because of the amount of Jobs possible for a dog, different jobs for different people so an "all rounder" to one is different to another, I'd class an "all rounder" a dog that can hunt r/h/f/d not just slipped but in a variety of scenarios and track & retrieve shot fur & feather, but as someone said earlier that a lot of its down to the training and experience which can only be given to a dog by its handler, the next chap may think different but that's just my opinion .
-
Good read that mate, it's the shit Times that make us appreciate the good times all the more, keep at it atb
-
You'll start to notice all the Lurchers but no hunters around here, there's three other people with Lurchers & terriers on my street alone and ive never been out with them and rarely discuss working the dogs only with one lad, its full of thieves and dick heads so be careful who you go out with, sometimes better to get out on your own and test the water.
-
I've seen a few dogs get caught up, one pretty bad, my bitch jumps on command but I still prefer to just chuck her over barbed wire as not to take a risk especially as its her first season I don't want her missing out due to injury, good luck mate hope you can get back out asap
-
I use a rope lead and cut the end off, Its easy to use and does the job cost about 3-4 quid though
-
Years too! must not have crossed paths only noticed it was you because of that pic in your avatar and the story, I still haven't forgive my Dad for not letting me on that trip remember it like it was yesterday what ever we did it cant have been that bad haha :cray:you still got the terrier?
-
Did you enjoy that day out Ant? unfortunately me and Dan couldn't make it I think due misbehaving! Didn't know you was on here, I herd that you can catch Tope from the rocks in north Wales at the right time of year looks like good sport.
-
At a motocross once and my uncle's yorkie cocked his leg up on an electric fence it's tight but was one of the funniest things I ever saw he to the van and didn't come out for the rest of the day You could try and take him say half hour to a an hour before the sun goes down, when it gets dark while the dogs busy get the lamp out, hope you sort it pal
-
I don't understand all the stick bullcrosses get, weren't the original greyhound built from bull crosses? Obviously there's a lot of shite around but that's in every corner of the dog world. I think it were Bert Sorrells that said "a good pit bulldog will do any job any other dog can do and then woop that dog afterwards". I'd like to think there's SOME truth in that. Anyway nice looking dog that pal, get rid of the dems claws or it will lose em on its own Atb Micky

I don't think it would stand up in court though, you walking you dogs and a cat suddenly jumps out, im sure its a dog dangerously out of control in public - don't think it applies to cats but not certain, I thought it was just people and guide dogs if your dog attacked one these you would be in trouble. atb Micky
-
haven't read the full post but was the cat on there land? if not I doubt they can do anything as long as you didn't intentionally release the dogs, if a cat is on the footpath and your dog is accidents happen its not illegal to have your dog off lead there's nothing you could have done however they could of kept there expensive cat in the house if they wanted to ensure its safety they couldn't take a fox to court if it was that way around considering the cat was doing exactly the same as your dogs were doing (hunting on there own initiative) there is really no one to blame. good luck I hope i

Cheers pal I'll look into that, I don't have a landline, but I was thinking of dropping my works business card in that's got a local landline number on to contact me

-
Think I will follow up with a knock as I've just heard how much stamps are! That bits coming out pal Thanks for the input chaps
-
The reason for mentioning the lad was your more likely to be responsible if you got your own child their but I see your point it could go the other way
-
Haha cheers pal you don't sound like a twat I like good grammer
-
Cheers Jedi I have updated it now and going to post 15 out tonight, letter below if anyone wants to use it as a template - To whom it may concern… As not to intrude on your time I have decided to write a letter to ask permission to provide free pest control on your land, I use an air rifle for pest birds & squirrel and ferrets/nets/ Lurcher (stock trained) to control rabbits & rats. I understand and respect the need to use and close gates, not to damage property, look after stock & your livelihood, also to keep an eye on and deter any undesirables that may choose to encroa
