  2. oh aye, one of the farms av got has rats but can only shoot them cos the farmer has a lurcher x akita or summit and its mental, the last rattin spot i was suppose to get ended up gettin not needing me so ive never had the chance to get the dog on them yet quality lad hardy is like
  3. aye, in Wingate now with the misses tho... ??
  4. should really break your terrier to your ferrets in your own home mate ,, after a decent walk at first so s/he is a bit tired, the reason behind doing it in your own home is less distractions... i know my patterdale would never of managed in a field.. had to do it in the garden where he knows.. didnt take long at all with him.. once he stopped trying to get at the ferrets took him out and kept hold of him when a ferret came out but let go when a rabbit came out.. he sharply got the idea, treats them like puppies now. as for nets, if im not walking far to the next set i pick them up and han
  5. Thanks mate, thats what I needed to hear
  6. just got a few questions regarding my patterdale. at the moment i use him for ferreting.. hes getting bloody good at that but a mate of mine just mentioned about some ratting permission and is trying to get me on... the rats need to be shot (wich i can do)... but the owner also doesnt mind dogs on them either. I have a couple of lads i could go with as ive read that having other dogs there aswell could help him pick it up quick. he naturally rags stuff about when he has them and i know this is needed for ratting (from a young age i made him tug) however hes broken to ferrets.. will th
  7. how are running dogs to train? what do you need to train them to do? just recall, possibly retrieve and walking to heel? I ask because one day i do intend on getting a running dog to finish off my ferreting team (4 ferrets + patterdale terrier) I trained my patterdale in no time at all.. got alot of tips of Ideation and Corkyjohn,, he is 2.5 to 3 year old,, broke him to the ferrets super quick, he recalls (Rakeaboot saw this at the show he did a daft race in) and he goes to where i point.. drops (unless its a rabbit).. stays and is getting good at marking up seeing as hes only been out
  8. thanks for all the help, its very much apreciated.... its come down to the Meindl Burma pro ( http://www.hillanddaleoutdoors.co.uk/productDetail.php?productId=149&brand=9 )(if anyone knows where i can get them cheaper than that let me know please)... the Dovre also look great and i like how high they go, but there alot more than i could spend at the moment really.. ive heard good things about the burma pro (except one guy on youtube but everyone shuts him down).. They look very supportive and also close to the price im going for. Good luck Fazza mate.
  9. haha.. I got bollocked off my misses cos I found some "old" pillow case in the towel draw (her fault for putting it there)... cut it up and threw it in for the ferrets... she went in and all I heard was "WHAT THE **** is my pillow case doing in there!!" .. i said.. oh yea found it in the towel draw so figured it was used as a cloth.. turns out. this pillow case was from some really expensive set .. anyways ive got the whole bed sheet now cos in her strop she threw it at me and said i might aswell have that... so i gave up washing stuff and now just throw it away and cut something else up
  10. I had alot of problems with my 2 hobs fighting and was about to get 2 jill kits.. my plan was to have the 2 males live together and 2 females live together then put them all in the run during the day, well... i had to get them castrated.. took about 2 weeks but they stopped fighting... also lowered the smell.. not that it bothered me anyways.
  11. Yea mentioning you have your own business (or run a business) will defintly help, if they have any brain in them they will relise that if you mess up it could potentially mess up your business. example: my Dad runs his own Tileing and plastering business.. both the pickup, and my van are signed up with our business name plastered (pun haha) all over them, we mentioned this and just said things like if theres ever any problem its not hard to find us. etc. etc. im assuming you would have some cards with you, you could just ask them to keep hold of the card even if they say no, I was in the e
  12. Is there any particular one you would recomend.. im looking at the Meindl Softline Men Ultra GTX Walking boot but not sure what i should be looking at
  13. nice pics bud Let us know how the dog gets on
  14. Welcome to THL.. this site will help you go far, its defintly helped me. if your struggeling to get permission, dress smartly (no flat cap/cap half way up your head, no camo gear etc. etc.) be polite, explain that your using an airrifle (for some reason when i said shoot they instantly assumed i use shotguns and said no). Offer to help out on the farm land..when you get the permission, respect the land, the owner.. ask if theres anywhere you cant go.. all that sort of polite stuff being insured helps alot too. good luck
  15. Hi, I injured my foot beggining of the year and have decided that I should now be looking at a decent boot as my ankle and foot will be weak when it is sorted, Im looking for something that will support my ankle, be warm.. comfortable,, gripy and waterproof and last a long time I will be going walking when this pot comes off (if they dont have to pin my foot) so these boots would be used for walking around the lake district aswell as hunting the type of terrain Im usually on is hilly tough ground, boggy marsh land and forestry Ive never had a decent boot before and just use old wor
  16. Ill try the swinging method tomorrow cheers
  17. Before even getting ferrets I went back loads of pages when i was learning there is so much info, tips and techniques on this site that spending a little while reading random posts will really help you out.. and also alot of different ideas for allsorts. The next thing I did was fall luky and found out a mate of mine actually goes ferreting.. so I tagged along with him.. though I didnt learn much I did get an idea of whats involved and weather I actually enjoy it or not. apart from that I learned alot of stuff myself, after getting the ferrets, all 4 of us (me, 2 ferrets(at the time) and
  18. I always gut a rabbit then freeze it.. obviously defrost before giving it to them, leave in the heart liver n kidneys (providing there ok) and fur, also leave the head on... i know in the wild it makes no difference but its how i got told to do it and it became a (good) habbit, pigeon i throw in and its gone by the time it would of needed to come out.. those are my 2 prefered foods for ferrets but its not always possible (i have an injury and not getting out as much yet) so in that case i feed them ..raw..minced meat, chicken, turkey, eggs (not often) and dried ferret food when low on meat.
  19. Thats what I figured. Like I say the hobs are no bother they wernt so bad to begin with then one day they just went totally perfect.. figured it was an age thing thanks for verifying
  20. Well I've got the kits to stop biting now and getting ready to take them out as they come to hand and dont mind there feet and teeth etc. being checked, however once picked up they just wriggle so much, ALOT more than my 2 males did. Im wondering if this is just an age thing as my males one day just stopped wriggling and started to hang as if something just clicked. these 2 younguns are so fast and alot thinner and smaller than my 2 males so they seem to be able to just about wriggle out my hand. The thing is they come straight back to me if they get out and climb back onto my hand, so its
  21. I got told off numerous people that they will pick the shot out.. and if they miss a bit it passes straight through them, I dont know how true the second bit is but the first bit is very true as all my pigeons are shot with an airrifle (therfor only 1 pellet) and theres always the pellet either on the floor after theyve messed up there hutches or in the corner out the way. about them being wary, yea my kits were wary of everything I put in but now they totally demolish pigeon, id love to know how they put the whole thing away just between 2 small jills. the males however they wernt and di
  22. Thats great mate! I've got a daughter on the way in around 6 weeks. All I can think about is when shes old enough to take her out ferreting and shooting. Just have images of me, the patterdale, ferrets, my dad and my daughter heading off out and her learning from me and my dad (self taught) and hopefully loving it. My partners mother has already bought some camo wellys for her for this weekend, there awesome! .. though.. will be a while before shes in them ha! HOPEFULLY she enjoys it so much she bugs her mother to let us get a running dog of some kind.... haha
  23. I stretch them, it takes a second and you can just throw them down and stick another net on almost instantly, pretty sure stretching them also dislodges the nerves so they dont kick about and end up down a hill or something. I used to chop them but came across a HUGE rabbit and thought you can get f'd chopping that, and so I learned to stretch (its not hard) and relised its much easier, faster and safer method... though my dad still chops, I've never seen a rabbit still alive from him doing it so hes obviously doing it right (he is trying to get the hang of stretching but I think he prefer
  24. Both, if its MEGA hot I use dry for obvious reasons but on a night time they always have meat put in.. Pigeon seems to be a particular favourite.. they love a bit of tuna too (when im totally out of meat i mix half a tin of tuna with dry for each hutch (2 ferrets per hutch)).. day old chicks is also a nice treat for them they seem to devour them. I've never gave them crow/magpie though, I dunno why but I just dont think feeding an animal, an animal that eats another animal can be good.... thats just my preferance though
