  1. Ive never had whippets before Boo, nor have i been out with any others to compare him with. So i can only speak as i find. To me he is no different to any other lurcher. His prey drive is normal, slightly less when compared to the bull x's i have had, but more or less the same as other folk's lurchers i have been out with. But for some reason which is strange for a whippet from what i have read, he is not really bothered at all by rats, he does not get as excited for them as he does rabbits or hares, and never has done, even before he was bitten by one He does have to kill his rab
  2. Same here, but they do venture far and wide to feed.
  3. Lovely lad And nice to hear someone taking their time and not rushing the dog as so many mistakenly do
  4. I personally don't think predation to that extent (ie speedy predators) is the reason Moo. I think more to do with the type of land they had to live in for food...ie flat open land a great distance away from cover, coupled with all the different types of predators. A bird of prey can be pretty fast and can cover some ground, and as it can see from above the hare would have nowhere to hide other than dense cover. So it would need speed to escape as many other predated animals do, but because it has a great distance to travel to get to cover it also needed the stamina at that high speed. Just m
  5. Perhaps because rabbits are prolific breeders and therefore in greater numbers the hare had to adapt to feeding further afield away from cover, it would need speed to make it back to safety. And because of it's ability to run fast at great distances and the lack of predators who can match this speed it did not need to evolve into a burrowing animal.
  6. Good advice above. If there are lots of rats you will be able to see their runs. Plan ahead, place corrugated sheets or boards down and place food underneath for a while so the rats get used to going to it to feed. Then one night quietly go and block the entrances to the sets/escape routes/runs. Hopefully when you lift the boards there should be rats underneath with no-where to run to. It will take more than one visit, but as it is a pals place it should not be a problem....and the dogs wont complain about having to go back again
  7. Warm up the muscles prior to running. To give heat to aid recovery.
