Mine get a small tub each twice a week...they love it...good for them too... then give the tubs to the ferrets, they'll clean em up and have toys to play with. Good idea mate...wouldn't have thought of that...

Mate, for many, that's the f***ing stark reality of the dog game...

Unfortunately...for far too many last season's dogs will end up the same as this season's dogs and next season's and the season after that...swapped, sold, palmed off, pts or worse still dumped or discarded...to be replaced predictably by "this season's hopeful"...nothing is guaranteed to depress me quicker than the sad and perpetually abysmal treatment shown to our canine compadres...often by self proclaimed 'dogmen'...who should know better...

Andy...I'm long enough in the tooth to recall out agri merchant stocking 2 brands of complete...Happidog and Wilsons...both grain based and not ideally suitable for dogs...lots of shepherds in the valley fed their dogs on nothing more than flaked maize and milk from the 'hoose coo' even as a young un I had enough savvy to realise that wasn't gonna get the best outta my dogs...I used to go weekly to our local killing house to fill two drums with sheeps heads and paunches...at the time they were 10 pence each...dogs thrived on them...and were fed lamb/mutton whenever I had a useable casualty...g

Fair comment that some dogs do on certain foods and others don't. Personally I wouldn't feed Dr John's...tried it years ago and my dogs turned into 'shit factories' within a week...never seen dogs shit like it...not healthy that...but know others who use it ans while they admit they are forever picking up shit their dogs look reasonable on it...the shepherd next door uses it and his dogs must shit at least 5-6 times when they're first let out in the mornings... The link below is interesting...not a great review of Dr John's... http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct

Fair enough your dogs are looking good on it, but why add more protein with meat, when you are feeding 28% protein. I received info on feeding gain from the rep, for my working whippet, who said to feed Gain 28% on its own. if adding raw meat which i was planning, to feed Gain 20% with a supplement. I'm sure you did mate...he's a rep...on commission maybe?????? Feed it on its own...feed more... shovel it in...don't add anything and I'll deliver another two bags next week... The way I have always done it is...feed the complete...whatever % and add meat or fish or whatever...so,

Penny put the conditioning chapter from her book up here somewhere a while ago...I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it...lots of good sensible advice... Biking dogs is all well and good and is a great tool for getting them fit...but it's gotta be done sensibly...read a post a while ago from someone who I thought would know better...seemed pretty chuffed that he'd ran his 6 month old pup for 8 miles behind his quad at 12 miles per hour...that's just plain stupid...reckoned it was a good indication of his pup's fitness...I thought it was an indication of his stupidity... -
I had a whippet when I was 12...by the time I had reached my mid teens it no longer fulfilled my every and varied needs...good fun when I was a kid...got into heaps of bother with that wee dog... But things progress...maybe when I am in my dotage I will have another...and hopefuly will get into lots of bother... Cold comes to mind though...jesus it felt the cold...couldn't fault him in the guts stakes though...when I left home he stayed with my mum and dad and lived til he was 16...

Fed Gain 28% for years and also Red Mills Excell 32% when they are grafting hard...never had an issue...interesting point you make tho...how quickly did this condition take to manifest...and did it affect their behaviour...some folk reckon too much protein makes em nuts...never had an issue...mind you when they are on the above feeds they are getting a serious amount of graft...they're on Gain 20% at the moment...

Proper decision mate...only last night on here someone was wanting shot of a terrier that wasn't good with kids...and it got a home too...let's hope it was a 'forever' home (really unlikely for a 3 year old non-working patterdale on this site) because if it ain't and it eventually finds its way into a family home who knows what the end result could be... You did the right thing...
