The shite Rambo was just up the road from me, I don't think DC's old man had the same animal.

Some of us have had enough of trying to help others and only care about what's in our own backyard. It's not about digging lads doing their homework, it's more about you doing yours and placing pups in digging lads yards. Good luck with that one, I can count on one hand the lads that have done right by me and the line of dogs
-
Even in the black dog scene it's hard to source the right lads, don't let it get you down, just carry on regardless, your obviously doing something right
-
That's the thing, the emptiest can makes the loudest noise. You'll have to shout a bit louder and source proper digging lads to help in the working of stock. If Muhammad doesn't come to the mountain, the mountain will have to go to Muhammad

Poetic and a nice sensible read, it should be that way no matter what you breed

There were two Russell's, a dog and a bitch from different litters but they both came from the same kennels. Both worked well, the dog was a little rough and in the end it was his undoing and the bitch was also killed to ground but I can't remember if she was as hard as the dog. Both came from the David Davies kennels.

This place has been worked dozens of times over the years but it's never held until today. I tried one of my dog pups who's keen as mustard, he marked a place the other day and marked this one too. I gave him a spin but he couldn't get on in the place, it's just a dug out rabbit hole so I put him back on the couples and dropped his mother. The old bitch is 11 years old and although every fibre in my body says retire her I honestly think it would be cruel to do so, she lives to work. She'll have a few hedgerow places until I think it's unfair and she's not holding condition.

eh !!! so how do you know its never made any difference if youve never done it ??lol i think i know what you mean?? tubes get opened backout anyway without bridging? i agree with that in the main, but i have defo known more than one earth ruined by too many holes in em backfilled to numerous tubes, which then go dead, sometimes lost for good. would they have had more chance if they had been bridged and left less blocked solid??? who knows ???? I'm still digging the same places I've always dug, in all fairness sometimes I have to wait a while longer for them to get worked. I don't know if it's
-
You must have the same mugs as I get in Staffordshire, I think they're just out for the picnic and a bevy or two. I spend half my season backfilling other twats holes. I never have and never will bridge, it's never made any difference to any earth I dig.

Very much the same as you, I was taken out a few times so someone could blow his own trumpet to a young lad. Once I saw a terrier work I was amazed and fascinated in equal measure, I've never looked back. I didn't have a mentor, they didn't want any competition or I just did their heads in with the thousands of questions I threw at them. In a perfect world I'd say mentor, left to me no one would be able to work a terrier unless they'd served some time with a mentor or something along the lines the French have.

A Loss........do You Pack In?
dillydog replied to Farmhand66's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
The two latest dogs I've reared, they've missed their first season but they didn't go without some schooling. They both marked the first two earths I took them too, the last one very strongly. I was on the phone to a mate and was a split second away from asking him to bring a shovel and collar. It would've been a vixen with cubs so I left her be, she was on a dairy farm so no harm done and there's no rush with the pups. -
Well said Bosun

They're no different from any other terriers that do their job, some can be hard but some learn life's lessons and steady up. Believe me when I say "you're just seeing the weddings and not the funerals" I produce some ugly b*****ds too. The privilege I have by producing them myself is I can hold on too them a little longer to get a better idea what's what. -
Looking For A Bitch To Stick My Terrier Over
dillydog replied to Jord M's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
You'll be lucky, I remember being in the same situation when I was a young lad. I had one of the best terriers I'd ever had the honour to own but didn't know of a bitch his equal. Best of luck -
Sire of the dog, the lad who owned the bitch got spun a yarn and got nowhere asking about her breeding. The bitch is on here with Ian B taking a few fox in a days terrier work. Call them fell, Patterdale or anything else you like, there's nothing but working terriers in his make up
-
How old's the bitch ? I'm just curious, not knocking, I'm taking a litter out of an old bitch as soon as she breaks myself
