That's the trouble with texts and or talk on sites, you loose the context of how it was meant and always imagine the worst
-
It's not a leverage thing but you'd be screwed without one, a very useful tool for holding onto.

Fair play, don't embarrass yourself anymore on here, Lord knows I've been there and done that. Rippem, I've been at this game for 33 years, I've had the pleasure of talking to and digging with most of the big names in the game. I couldn't in all honesty think of a single one of them that hasn't added a little bit of this or that to add the traits they were after. Some of the more modern breeders didn't have to because the work was already done for them. I can give you pedigrees going back to Smithy and before him, every one true as they can be but Nuttall used Border and bull, Gould would u

It must have Russell in it

As promised, the black and tan in the same litter as the smooth black bitch and four black and whites

Rippem the reason we all say it's a throw back is because we all know there's no such thing as a pure Patterdale. You're getting obsessed with a piece of paper and a colour. The line of terriers I keep are all based on one of the most influential Patterdale studs in the history of Patterdales "Smithy", guess what, there's black and tan in Smithy too. It doesn't matter that it's in the mix, it doesn't matter if there's bull, Belington, border ,fell, Lakeland or anything else, the Patterdale is a TYPE not a breed. If you doubt my commitment to this type then your welcome to hunt with me or s

well I would dispute that lol this little fella I could quite happily turn my back on while took a line straight through lambs sheep or what ever. I could literally bet my right arm on him. Wish I could say the same for my present dog lol. When it came to putting rabbits in the bag with the ferrets or flushing out he would have run rings round your spaniels no doubt I think he was referring to one dropping to ground rather than worrying sheep
-
The best thing for a rabbiting terrier is a triple A cartridge, once said terrier is buried buy yourself a spaniel
-
Fair play Mik he's having some fun, useful little tykes aren't they
-
Probably the worst thing that could happen to any breed, open ticket to lie and cheat

I think I read it right, my point is there's no such thing as a pure Patterdale. From my time in America most of you think a Patterdale is a type, IE smooth Nuttall type. If you could see what gets put into most Patterdale classes at a hunt show you'd have a kitten ! If you're asking what I'd do again I thought I'd answered you, PTS and move on or give it a chance it's your call. I can understand you wanting a tight bred pup to start a yard but unless you do your research and contact someone that keeps a specific line you'll be disappointed at every turn

Your missing the whole point, there is no such thing as a pure Patterdale. The whole makeup of every single line of black's has fell, border, bull, Belington and just about anything else that did it's job back in the day yes back in the day, but going back that far it shouldn't pop up TODAY. Like I said before if you had 2 black dogs you were told were pats and bred them.and had white dogs are you gonna go tell everyone you have white pats? I've seen the dogs you post and I highly doubt you would nor bred off it..WOULD YOU CALL THE WHITE PUP THAT CAME FROM YOUR 2 BLACK DOGS A PAT? REALLY WOUL
-
Yes they did
-
I've had this line for a few decades now rippem so no I wouldn't, I do get the odd white chest and white foot though. I'm not trying to take it out of context, I assumed you had seen the parents work and knew their makeup
-

The whole makeup of every single line of black's has fell, border, bull, Belington and just about anything else that did it's job back in the day yes but you see lines of black dogs very unique True but they got that way through breeding plans, they didn't start like that

It's human nature to question things when they crop up unexpectedly, I don't think I'd be any different. If you were happy with the work I'd gift the coloured pup away or PTS. It may be a throw back, it may be bullshit breeding, but as I said the work should be first and foremost.
-
No, I had the Stevens stuff then and it was the beginnings of greater things.
-
Black smooth bitch out of the same litter, I haven't got a picture of the black and tan bitch out of the litter but I'll get one off the lad later. Patterdale, fell of Lakeland's, any colour is possible
-
A black and white dog out of the litter, a decent enough dog. That's my eldest lad who's now 28 years old, Jesus time flies.
-
Picture of a picture so poor quality. The black and tan bitch on the bottom left is the dam to the multi coloured litter.
-
I had a Lakeland bitch that was Middleton bred, she wasn't directly off him but she was his blood, I used a well known black terrier from the Midlands on her and got four black and white, one black and tan and a black bitch ! Everyone a show stopper, some decent workers in the mix but what label would you put on them ?
-
There's no such mythical animal as a "pure Patterdale " , they've got border, bull and Black and tan in the mix. They're a relatively new type, show me any pictures of a family of "pure Patterdale " before Cryil Breay, Nuttall or Buck. Nuttall still gets white pups in the odd litter, Steven blood gets black and tan or chocolate and tan, much like a chocolate doberman colouration.

If you thought the parents were good enough to breed from why would a colour bother you ? Half the reason terrier work has gone tits upwards is people breeding for colour or stamp, work is the reason to breed and the reason you keep them.
