Id like to know if the pummer is a new breed & what is its make up (dogs used to breed the pummer from the beginning )
-
A sad time sir ,something all good dog owners feel sooner or later ,but what can soften the blow is if he has left off spring that are in turn doing well at their sport ,and this dog certainly has left his stamp in that area .RIP, Gone but never forgotten.

Any dog with half hound or better make great finding game dog ,the nose is unreal and most have plenty of prey drive .nice dogs guys .

wee belters those pups your mrs did a grand job .

The name says it all hunt away, bred in NZ said to be part lab in the early development, giving the collie more heavier body & the huge bark .The lines of the Huntaway in the North Island of NZ make for a very big heavy dog huge bark but well known for lacking in the 3 top inches ,said to be all bark & no brains.A common type of collie of old times was the "handy dog" which would back and bark in the yards ,show good eye and catch a lamb or ewe at lambing time hents the name "handy dog".

I'm going to be a bit different ,personally I don't really like them ,had two pures ,and several ist cross AH worked on pigs ,i found them pretty sly ,got into it on a sow or smaller pigs but never put them selves in danger on a bigger boar , however if you like them and break them in well for smaller game I'm, sure they can get the job done & well .For my self Id rather have a ist cross whippet or greyhound x kelpie, faster ,smarter, and lighter on their feet. Just what I refer nothing more .

I work them in two teams of up to 15 ,but I don't often have the full team as there's always a couple on heat and some on sick leave with minor injuries' don't shovel the shit ,the dogs are kept out in the country on a 4 acre block ,where they can shit anywhere within reason .

That's the curse of owning a dog ,they are only given a 1/4 of the time their owners have ,gone but never forgotten ,they live on in our minds .Sorry for ya lose.

What also happened in NZ ,after it had killed up to 90% of the rabbits ,the lack of them changed some of the habit of the dry hill country in Central Otago. Gone was the short dry grasses kept very short by the hordes of rabbits that lived there, replaced by thicker wet growth which doesn't suit rabbits at all .Even though its taken 25 years or more for the rebuild of populations to get to a problem level there were plenty of rabbits to hunt if anyone choose to do so after about 10 years ,however given the number of hunters you have over there, the harvest of rabbits would need to be light a

wow thats so very true.

While I cant speak about Aussie rabbits ,the recovery of rabbits in NZ took all of 25 years till the pockets had grown to what now is a big problem .The % of non effected rabbits of RCH is now in the mid 90s and we once again try to battle the bunny ,who has moved alot closer to us ,seen living in small towns ,sections and gardens. God bless the humble bunny .

All we can hope for is to be happy and the choice how we spend our time from birth to the day we die ,I like to do what I do but its never going to make me rich and its not for everybody however it never gets old ,Im as keen as I was 25 years ago ,that and fishing are at the top of my list .I hope you can make it back to the bush ,being in the right place at the right time helps but sometimes we have to except that ATM it doesn't work and bide our time, lifes much like that .

Its the interesting part ,its a huge extra not having to find time to work or train the dogs ,its all part of the job ,out in the fresh air where there is always something to see or watch. Time doesn't matter ,I roll out when I feel like it & roll back in much like the wind ,nobody raggin my ass ,I'm in charge of all the workers, no holiday pay or sick leave ,no I can't make it in today ,every day the workers are happy to see and spend time with me .Perhaps more valuable than any of this is ,you get in tune with dogs ,get to know each one inside out know their weak and strong points &

I'm very lucky that I can keep as many dogs as I do & work them .One of my bitches who's a very good dog has dropped a litter of 7 pups yesterday. She is the result of 25 years of breeding the best we have to each other .These pups have been sired by the bitches grandfather also a very good dog ,a method I call one out then back in resulting in getting a double dose of the sire & this has resulted in many wonderful working dogs .We only breed from proven high quality workers ,but its fair to say they now carry a real mix of breeds and so to get a standard type pup , we like to use

What is the breeding of the other two & what game do you target with theses dogs ?

Indeed there are many pages to a running dog

Yes along most roadsides there stands of flat ,it grows like a weed, possums like to nest in the stuff as when the leaves die off it just bends over and becomes very thick ,it is under this possums can find a dry warm nest. These animals only come out at night .Most terriers can kill a possum but they put up a good fight using their claws & teeth ,I dont allow my dogs to hunt them as in a short period of time they go coon mad & hunt them over everything else.

At times I've hunted almost all of the game available in New Zealand ,Ducks ,Geese, Red Deer,Fallow deer,Wild Pigs ,Wallabies and small game ,Rabbits Hares ,& Possums .All except Ducks & geese don't require any type of license nor is there a limit or season .Trout ,perch & salmon have a season and also require a license & have bag limits .
-
I had shot the first of this pair of rabbits who had been living in some flax ,so I decided to action the other one today since they were only 50 yards from my front gate. The ferret did its job and the dogs found where it was located and pull it out.Flax forms large stands with a large tube like roots .Rabbits love it to dig into & under the root balls as its dry and warm. Flat was once cut & dried to make hay bale string ,its very strong & tuff ,manys a time I've used a length to carry a good number of rabbits, the odd trout or to keep me pants up .lol.
