  1. Noticed this on the dogs leg, he was taken to the vet and given antibiotics. After a month it has at last cleared however he still reluctant to put any weight on that leg. Had him out last weekend after just one run he was lifting leg, shy to use it, holding it high. Vet unsure of next step although has suggested the dog thinks he's going to feel pain so reluctant to put his full weight down or run at full pelt. Two doses of antibiotics have cleared the wound and swelling has gone. . Any ideas are welcome.
  2. If you want a gamble AP, go get a greyhound bitch and put a labrador over it, with a bit of luck with your gamble you might get 10 or so pups. good luck in finding them homes I bet you won't take the gamble again Might be worth a punt mush, wouldn't be a greyhound though more a greyhound/whippet.
  3. Good point there S2H, people not willing to take a gamble and stick to tried and tested.
  4. I agree it's me MIK ,that's why I'm looking for something easier to train to retrieve. I also want more that's why I look outside the box and not just the norm.
  5. Disagree with nose, ferreting dogs need it and mooching dogsneed it Mik. If you class not having nose as mediocre then I'll go for mediocre all the time. Also disagree with retrieve, I find it challenging with some lurches.
  6. Not everyone has Gaz, but for a pot filling lurcher a Gundog bred dog can't far off
  7. Socks , gundogs have been bred to work with game for years. I agree there are some poor examples of gundogs but as any type of dog there are crackers as well. Obviously you have to choose wisely.
  8. Mik, nose ,retrieve ,soft mouth good feet and good coat also quite biddable.
  9. Every thread about Gundog crosses is positive, on paper for a run of the mill lurcher it should work. Not sure they have been worked and failed Gaz. I think people just stick to what they know.
  10. Sweeping statement socks, why are they shit?
  11. Just like to know why, there must be a reason.
  12. As skycat says , it does work, but don't stop with the tug training when you think you have the retrieve sorted. It can all go pear shaped again.
  13. What makes a top class dog? Story telling, exaggerating and boasting on THL forum.
  14. Anything that keeps the dog active has to be beneficial and will help with fitness and building towards the start of the season. But nothing beats working but obviously don't start them straight away from doing nothing to a full on lamping session it's only going to end in tears. Bike work, flirt pole swimming in rivers and walks all help, assess the dog, assess the ground, and the weather. Rest has a massive part to play the same as diet does. See how the dog gets up from resting is he struggling or is he up for it. I work a 3/3 rota 3 on the rig three off the the rig I get the dog fit In my l
  15. Meindl boots, expensive but excellent.
  16. Always fancied something with Labrador in it, maybe lab whippet grey
  17. No expert but would say that's more than enough, if the pup is mad for it keep it that way and don't sicken it. Let the pup grab hold and reel it gently in for a retrieve praising it. Really have to be careful with pups can do more harm than good don't go mental with it. Have fun but be steady.
  18. Do flat feet hinder the dogs performance?
  19. As boyo says, go with the one you like the best with the work it's going to get I'm sure everything will work out fine. Good luck with whatever pup you go for.
