Nothing wrong with breeding a bitch young aslong as she has shown what she is made off and you know the blood behind her.I have a bitch here I bred just gone 2 year old reason for doing so was we had no other bitch and after seeing her work her 1st season we were more than happy with her also her work style was hard so we were also wary of the fact she could be lost to ground at anytime so she was bred.she was put back to her own blood and produced 5 pups all of which worked with 3 still going strong and 2 lost to ground. I repeated the mating 3years later and out of 6 born only one bitch surv

Dilly may I ask why you ran the second litter on if the 1st litter was below average and I know you know the breeding of your dogs inside out personally I wouldn't have been inclined to do so.

I remember the rise campaign back a few years and their was a meeting of different huntsmen and others and the hunt fraternity were willing to abolish terrier work with hunts aslong as they were allowed hunt.

I agree with you their are plenty of lads that would love to see a good dog fail instead of seeing it do a good graft then jealousy has a lot to do with it. I have heard of lads telling other men slip your dog in here dug it loads of times only light to end up a gruller and they then turn around and say that the first time it went that deep.I would never ask any man to put his dog where I wouldn't put my own and anyone that has dug with me will vouch for that. I personally like to see another mans dog work so when I have someone up for a day I try and sort them with as many digs as possible as

Stop end I've said it before and I'll say it again you do spout some bollox.terriers are just terriers not machines programmed to do a specific job so yes any terrier can and does on occasion have an off day no matter what way they are bred. I have seen dogs go season after season without fault and then one day something happens that no one can explain as no one knows what goes on underground it might be just the once but it happens to the best of them and I think most lads if honest will agree.

when experienced terrier lads pass away.
fat man replied to stonewall's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I agree with you Glyn but not only are you educating the terrier lads that are not in the know your also educating the antis as 90% of the c**ts have not a clue of the laws. That's what gets me on here and im not referring to you Glyn but the amount of lads that come on here asking stupid questions that 90% of the time are illegal on an open forum instead of just doing what they have to do and no one the wiser for it but instead they have to tell the world and draw unwanted attention upon themselves. -

Now Glyn no need to state the obvious as we all get proper treatment for our dogs when they need it but sometimes they don't always need vetenary attention and a good job too as them vets sure know how to charge. -

In fairness Glyn its their head and face that 99% of the time take a little bit so its not as if their going to go around banging the their head of a wall or such. When a terrier takes a bit and its laid up and sore I can't see any harm in helping to comfort it a little using a mild pain killer jmho. -

I reckon pain killers are a great job when a terrier has taken a bit. When you think about it if you had for instance a toothache first thing apart from a dentist is painkillers so what's the difference to dogs and IMO it helps to get them eating quicker. -
If you have the kennel space then hold the dog until next season and see what happens no one can say what goes on under the ground.

Sheep dip usually does the job just be careful not to have the mix to strong. I seen an old man years ago with a pointer dog that he seen some ticks on and all he did was to touch them with a lit cigarette and they just fell of but then we don't all smoke.

For a man that's not into terriers in a big way you actually hit the nail on the head Eddie. That's what I have been trying to put across. Their are lads selling pups all over the place using ac name when in truth their as far away from his breeding as can be. Their is also lads with that blood that sell the odd pup and I've nothing against them their is always surplus in litters.then you have the lads telling lies on how dogs we're bred only recently a lad was telling me the breeding of a pup he was interested in buying only problem was the sire to said pup was dead over 4 years and the bitch

Your probably right their all white over rated rabbit dogs.
-
Their plenty of lads with cocker blood in their dogs.
-
Firstly their is not a lot of Irish lads have his dogs a lot say they have but the truth is he didn't breed them and 2nd your giving the smart remarks for us no need to bring the man into it the thread is show us your patterdales not who bred them.
-
Probably would lol.

When dug to enough I mean regularly they learn to take a grip where it can't get at them where as some are stupid and will walk straight into the sharp end. We dug a dog a good few times a few year back and he would be completely silent not a twitch on the box and always came away with very little nasher was the dogs name and I reckon a few of here dug over the same dog.no one is saying their 2 a penny but they are out their and 99% of terriers that go to ground will take a little unless their standing of several ft.
-
I cout show you a bitch that can be dug weekly and she is mute and as I have said very little work on her anyway its me that has to clean and feed them so I really don't care who believes what.
-
Some do some don't and I've seen both but that's how terriers are.
-
They are out there might not be everyone cup of tea but aslong as they do the job who cares. Some lads like to hear their dog working but it doesn't bother me either way once they stay.I'd rather have a mute hard dog than a yapper that will move with quarry everytime the pressure comes on IMO that only educates them more and ruins a good earth in the process. Same applies to stupid hard dogs that will do maybe half an hour flat out then come out like something from a horror movie not what i want in a terrier.
-
Bet you have and I bet i seen them.
-
Why didn't you climb up ya big fat f****r

I've always maintained the hardest part of any dig is the break through that's when the terrier has to be 100% up to scratch or else your digging another hole.I have seen it many times with terriers that have not that extra gear all the digging in vain for t the quarry to push by and away especially with educated quarry. Lads from different areas have come on my permission only to see their top dog lose or even worse come away and then they will say that never happened before reason being their dog was never on quarry that knows the score and when push came to shove the quarry won the day. My

Their not that rare at all iv a bitch here mute while working and to look at her you would swear she has never been dug and she see's her share of educated quarry weekly. I also have her 2 sisters and they don't make much noise either. I also seen there father dug many times with little fuss and he was mute up until 9 year old then started to give a little tounge.he was actually dug to 11 times in 3 weeks with very little on him.I agree some are stupid hard and of little use but a lot of mute terriers have a brain and if I had to choose between them and a Bayer the choice would be easy as I wo

I've always heard it said only breed from a bitch that is capable of finishing a fox and a dog that does it on a regular basis.I can not see how putting 2 sounders Bayer's together would ever improve the working terrier IMO they would eventually ruin it.
