if your saying they are "red" it could be red mite, these are often associated with poultry of pet bird keeping, they live in cracks and crevices in wood, come out, feed on blood from the host, then go back to there cracks etc, you could try moving her and the kitts to a fresh hutch, new bedding etc, or if thats not acceptable, try without disturbing her too much, to give the cage/court a really good clean, bedding/sawdust etc, you probably wont eradicate them completly at this stage, but reducing numbers will help, as not good for the kitts to have them on them, not trying to knock anyone

that what makes it worst, its not even a meal as they kill for the fun of it, then leave them there, if they were killing and feeding themselves/young etc, you'd feel it was the way of the world, but to kill and leave as an alternative, dunno if anyone's tried it, but its working in our garden, when the neighbours aint looking, piss around the perimeter of your garden, it stopped our local fox from coming in, correction, it comes in, but wont go anywhere near my scent marking area's (poultry/ferrets)

reading that lot, made me realise how good my dentist is, Ive missed god knows how many appointments, yet has never moaned at me, I got my sons and my dad onto his "books" as he dont charge the earth for work he does, and when either myself or my sons go to see him, and need a perscription, he writes them out in my dads name, because he's over 65 and dont have to pay charges

nice job mate in time though, you may need bigger hinges on those doors/mesh, they look a bit small to me

if you look at the review page, i think the locator plus model, may work on ferrets, as its more expensive at £99 but you get 3 tags and a range of 600ft which will go through walls etc, so cant see why it wont go through soil?, i suppose it would need someone to buy one and test it, if it did work, the one thing i can see as a bonus, is the ability to track individual tags, when using a deben mk3 with the ferts, you can distinguish between collars, if you have more than one fert down the warren, yet with that device, you can switch between tags, would be wicked if it worked, a finder with 3

no, there probably aint much difference, although Im sure a few on here will argue the difference, I recomended getting working ferrets, as this is a hunting site first and foremost, and therefore there will be quite a few ferreters with kitts around, therefore it would be a bit silly for me to say, go buy them from a pet shop or rescue would'ent it, just trying to do my bit for our members

I thought I had it hard with 29, looks like you'vre taken the prize instead

as the above post said, I too had my castrated hob in with 3 jills and 12 kitts, he was only removed when he started getting too motherly and moved the kitts every 10 seconds, only you can tell, as they are your ferts, no one knows them better than you, so try introducing them back together, but keep a very close eye out

it was me that deleated it, apart from the same clip being on here a couple of months back, it was, as some have said in bad taste, yes rabbits get it too, but they are in a burrow, and at least have some chance of escape, that clip was as far as Im concerned Illegal, its as bad as dog fighting, the crow had obviously been caught, and "given" to the ferret, I doubt if the ferret had caught the crow

looks suitable for them danny

training isi'nt really neccessary, make sure you buy kitts from working stock, if you leave getting them till later in the year, they may already have had a few trips out with the breeder, but then they wont be "the best" as he'll keep those one's, Id suggest you try to find someone close to you, that could take you along on a few ferreting trips, that way, your new "young stock" would be getting put down holes, along with older ferrets that they can follow doing a simple search on here in the old posts, should give you most of the info you'll need, the difference between mk1 and mk3

is it essential to have written permission for shooting? the permission i have is more verbal. usually an hour or so before i want to go up and shoot, i go up and ask if its ok to come up today and he just says yes, and where he wants me to shoot. ive not asked for a letter or anything as he doesnt look like he has time for that and is always in a rush doing something on his dairy farm. Id say, yes of course, what happens if plod gets informed by public, theres a guy walking around shooting, they come and pull you, all you have is the guys number, could be your mate on the ph

do you know the parentage of the parents? as having a albino in the litter, both hob and jills would need an albino in their make up, ie carrying albino in genes

when you phone plod, have everything written in front of you, so as not to sound un proffessional start with who you are, name address, mobile contact number, state your doing rabbit culling on mr so and so's land, plus his address and contact number, a time that your be shooting from untill too, tell them your ring back at given time to inform them that cull is finished, if you have transport, then also reg number of car (if its parked nearby/on land) dont start taking every tom, dick and harry with you, at the end of the day, its your name on the permission, taking others that just

i don't realy have this problem but i do feed my ferrets the odd mixy rabbit if i get them as long as its not too bad BUT the reply a wild animal would not turn it down is not an issue as mine and everyone elses ferrets on here are NOT wild animals they live in a hutch / court what ever at your house, a wild animal wouldn't take its self to the vets or get any form of treatment for any injorys / illness does that mean its ok to leave your ferrets be in there hutch / court with injorys and let them sort themselfs out as this is what a wild animal has to do ?? did I suggest ferrets we

I love it when people kiss and make up

hi danny, some good questions there, as with any animal, the more space you can give it the better, but lets say, you only get permission for a hutch in the garage, its a start, Im sure once mum and dad see how good ferrets are, it wont be long before your given permission for an outside court, if you could give them a 48" long hutch, and let them have the run of the garage each day, that would be a start, some of the underground tubing made up like a maze, would give them a good run/workout each day, as they would be pets to start with Id suggest 2 hobs, although they can be a little "sme

listen people, this is supposed to be a forum for open debate, not name calling, Ive already warned a couple of members on this post, now it seems will's started the ball rolling again (slating jojo and driod) now at the end of the day, this is a forum for "the hunting life, with ferrets" we dont check out new members, and not allow them access if they dont work their ferrets, and I can quite understand true ferreters getting a little wound up when disscussions are between pet and workers, have been in that situation with jojo myself, but I dont start using the "C" word, or slating them, at t

if there is a dead one, then even a first time mum, will keep the nest clean, from a ferts point of view, if its dead, why waste good food, me personnaly, Id leave her to settle down for a couple of days before taking a proper look, if theres a dead one still in the nest at that time, then remove it yourself

good job there jack, were gonna need lots more though for the orchards
-
you shouldent have to feed them, the jill will, my jill started by placing rabbit in the nest box, whilst they still had there eyes shut, they smelt it and hauled themselves in the right direction, once there eyes are open, again, they will find there own way to the food bowl, if you get to 3weeks and they still aint tasted rabbit, pop a few bits in with them yourself

thats what im getting at sue, mixy is about the easiest to detect in rabbits, yet that healthy looking rabbit, could have something lurcking inside it, I know theres different views on lengths of time rabbit should be frozen for, I personnally like it to go in the freezer for at least two weeks, before being used, but for the sake of the head and liver that you may want to bin, its an awful waste binning the rest
