Bitch Cut Up Bad End To A Good Season
skycat replied to captain2010's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Not fecked at all: seen plenty of sliced tendons on hind feet, and resultant flat toes. Dog can lose a bit of speed, and you don't want to run a flat foot on hard or stony ground, but apart from that, have seen them continue to run with no problems. Keep the claws on the flat toes cut as short as possible: even taking them right off at the toe and cauterizing to reduce regrowth and keeping pressure off the toe. Good luck. -
There are no quick answers to any of your questions as everything depends on the dog, the age, type, temperament, sex etc of all the dogs, both your existing dogs and the new one. Also whether or not the new one is a pup or an adult or a sub-adult. Little pups: not to be left alone for even a second with adult dogs until pup is successfully integrated into existing pack. Crate or kennel within short distance of other dogs, interaction under supervision at all times. Sub-adult (bigger pup though not a mature adult: from between 5 -10 months of age generally speaking) First get pup into

Quality photos all of them, though my favourite is the first ice and water photo, that and the very last one of the loch. Superb.

Is that a hind dew claw on the adult? Just wondering. It's not a breed requirement is it?

Running After Toe Amputation?
skycat replied to Gaz_1989's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I've said this several times before: taking a hind toe off isn't (generally) as devastating as taking a front toe off. The hind foot provides the power from behind, but doesn't suffer the same type of punishment as a front foot. If the toe is taken off by someone that knows running dogs then the dog may lose a tiny bit of speed, not enough to affect a lurcher, but where milliseconds count in a racing Grey could be the difference between winning and losing a race. I've had lurchers had hind toes off, no problem whatsoever and run on very rough ground. -
Those really are very well made pups indeed But more to the point, they're getting the rearing they need to make the grade, rather than being stuck in a kennel 24/7 like some pups are.

It's a sad fact that too many lurcher owners these days see their dogs as some sort of kudos thing. Whatever happened to the lurchers which went out quietly and worked with no fanfare,no shouting, no song and dance, and most of all no element of competition with other owners? I though lurchers were supposed to be about hunting, not increasing their owners' profile or bigging up their egos. Seems to me that whilst there are plenty of people who do go out and quietly do their own thing with their dogs, it is mostly the 'daywalkers' (to use baw's words) that like to shout about their dogs to

It's the music I love: Ry Cooder at his best.

I don't see how putting a dog down could be seen as being 'out for the money' as it would cost a lot less to have a dog put down than to operate on it. Just trying to make sense of what you said. Alternatively, maybe the dog has an underlying condition which would make surgery dangerous: heart problem? Just wondering.

I don't believe that for a second, papers like the Sun and the Mail would be running daily articles if that was the case. As it stands you only hear about a handful of cases like here every year.. While I don't agree with what she's been allowed to do, there are far worse things happening in the world to get pissed off about.. her issue is that she is having it built .....alot of families move into council facilities with big families ......... woman down the road has 7 or 8 kids .........there waiting for a bigger property........i think the issue is more that she is having it built especial

The worst thing is that those kids are growing up thinking that it is normal to scrounge and never do any work.

Great photos of good looking dogs

I like the tones, like the colours and the grasses, foliage, stream. It is definitely in the 'naive' bracket: like Lowry, so if you accept the rather simple way the animals are painted, its OK, but if you are looking for total realism, then no. Whatever rocks your boat, but I wouldn't bin them: they do have a certain something about them. But if you cut the fox and dog out of the scenic one it would be really nice: they just don't 'go' with the rest of the painting IMO.

It might struggle on old rabbit leg bones: they are the hardest bones in an adult rabbit. When I had a mincer similar to that we had to smash up the rabbits a bit with an axe to get them through it, and the motor whined like hell sometimes. We always mince hard lamb or beef fat with rabbit, and it didn't like that much either: used to clog up a bit. But definitely a lot easier than a hand mincer!

Tease her with a soft toy: don't ever throw it. She needs to find the confidence to want to grab things: you don't say how old she is: and some pups' prey drive don't kick in until much later. Make sure that you play with her on her own: no other dogs around to distract her or to undermine her confidence. Encourage her to grab the soft toy and play tug with you. Be very gentle: sometimes if an owner's voice is too loud, too threatening, that can put them off too. Sit on the ground to begin with so you don't loom over her. Be very gentle at all times .... and patient.

Go to lurcherlink: they have hordes of dogs available, and the good thing about them is that they are all fostered in private homes so the people know exactly what the dogs are like in family situations, how high their drive is, whether or not they are good with other dogs/cats etc. IMO Lurcherlink do the lurcher world a better service than any other organisation there is, and they are not anti-hunting either. http://www.lurcher.org/llink.html

Tsayad: I didn't know there were restrictions on using scent hounds in Oz. Does that mean that fox hunting with hounds is banned then? And what about using lurchers to take fox? Be interested to know what the laws are over there.

Superglued Broken Nail
skycat replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
If you sealed in some dirt, even invisible bacteria when you super glued the nail, then that will cause an infection: one of the main reasons I don't mess about trying to glue claws: it is almost impossible to get them sterile. Much better just to cut the claw off short above the splits: stand by to hold a pad of cotton wool over the stump as it will bleed like hell, but soon stops. Then just keep the foot clean and dry until the quick has hardened off: about a week. Give it a week on the lead and then it should be healed enough for a little light running. -
Those kids look healthy and happy: none of that over-clean living like nowadays, spraying anti-bacterial stuff everywhere.

Love your way of writing: a dry sense of humour And cracking photos too.

Yes: Lakie litter I bred years ago: at around 6 weeks they were seriously trying to kill each other: if they'd had the jaw power and adult teeth it would have been nasty. I ended up splitting them up: 2 and 2 in adjoining boxes within the same large kennel: the bitch could get into them, but they couldn't get out or at eachother: similar thing: 2 were always hammering the other 2.

Sickness Or Diarreah Bug...
skycat replied to Gaz_1989's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
That's good, but you can see from the colour that there is still blood in it: take it nice and steady and keep her on the chicken and rice for another week: that's what I would do if it were my dog. And the slippery elm. Also plain yoghurt or probiotics. -
Grief stricken homeless man seeks public's help to find his stolen dog
skycat replied to colliebird's topic in Lost and Found
Thanks. I've had a few who bit the hand that fed, so to speak, but I like to think that I'm a reasonably good judge of character these days: getting older HAS to have a few advantages and in over 20 years of letting the spare room those who have turned up trumps have outnumbered the wasters 10 to 1. -
Sickness Or Diarreah Bug...
skycat replied to Gaz_1989's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Give her another couple of days on the lead. Inflammation of the digestive tract (gut) can take a while to settle down, so I'd avoid strenuous exercise until she's been crapping normally for a few days. -

Single people are the bottom of the list when it comes to housing. They can't rent privately as they don't have the money to put up even one week's deposit and a week of rent in advance, but they can't get housing benefit unless they have an address and proof that they are renting! It is a catch 22 situation for real. How many landlords would be willing to believe someone when they say that all they need is a couple of weeks' grace to get into the housing benefit system? Not many, for sure. I know all this because I rent out my spare room, and I've had this situation several times.
