I think, from the little I know of stags/lurchers (whatever) in the USA, there are far fewer dogs in pet homes, bred for showing, racing, or a bit of part time hobby hunting than there are here in the UK. I would guess that around % of the lurcher population in the UK aren't hard core hunting or coursing dogs. Could be wrong mind, but that's just my thoughts on the matter.

I agree with bunson on this, but I wouldn't just go out and buy a shock collar and start using it without first going to a really good trainer who can show you how to work it correctly. In the right hands they are a superb tool, but in the wrong hands, or inexperienced hands they can make things a lot worse. Forget treats: no treat that you can give the dog will equal the reward it is getting for hunting for itself. Quite often, when a teenage pup rebels quite so strongly as yours is doing, it is because the owner has done too much heavy training early on. The pup, as its prey drive ki

Is the dog insured? If so, ask for a referral to the Animal Health Trust. They specialise in all sorts of weird problems> when one of my bitches had meningitis as a pup my vets had never seen it before, but the AHT said it wasn't that uncommon in large breed young dogs. They have world experts on all sorts at that place: well worth seeing if they can get to the bottom of it. Having said that, my pup wasn't insured, and cost me over a grand nearly 17 years ago , but she was worth every penny as she went on to have a long and happy life and produced some decent offspring. http://www.aht.org

Not a Fenton then

For sure you don't need a fancy lens: those pics are superb. You're a lucky man living where you do. Many people would kill to be able to even take a walk in a place like that: me I guess And that Pom has got to be the happiest, fittest 'toy' dog alive. Keep em coming. Cream dog is a really photo opportunity: natural poise for the catwalk

Even if someone posts utter crap, they get replies: and those who post great posts also get the number of replies they deserve. This is truly the liveliest, funniest, most entertaining, most interesting and informative, as well as the most most annoying, forum there is: long may it continue to be so. People say 'oh its only the internet', but to me sites like this are like real life in a goldfish bowl, and for sad feckers that don't get out much with others, it's a way to keep in touch with other like, or not so like-minded people. It's all too easy to get stuck in a rut and forget how oth

I muzzeld the dog when this came on to c was it from her licking it and its not up near the anal glands ur very quick to start calling people cruel Apologies if I upset you. It's just that there are so many muppets on here it is hard sometimes. Smack my wrist for jumping to the wrong conclusion!

Yes I remember Mina, every time she knocked me out of the coursing she smiled

Bloody hell: I only just saw this: I suppose you're fully booked by now?

One of my bitches used to have it: she's 9 years old now, and around 6 years ago I went entirely over to raw feeding: it took her over a year to grow hair on her outer thighs but she hasn't lost it again at all since then. I also make sure to give them plenty of greens, carrots and celery in their food. Could be coincidence, but who knows.

Lovely! Do you remember Mina? She was a smiler as well: shame I didn't have a camera when I had her.

What? Muzzled ALL the time? Can't be right. Dogs need to groom themselves, lick, nibble etc. Muzzling 24/7 is very cruel. Blocked anal glands can cause irritation and hair loss either side of the root of the tail. Get it to a vet who will show you how to clear the glands if that is the problem.

Fieldfare Challange 8 Dog Coursing Stake.
skycat replied to sowhat's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Naughty bit of editing in the official version then: I wonder why -
I quite agree with you Wilf, when you say: I think there is a big difference between someone who keeps buying and selling dogs and someone who is genuinely trying to improve their stock or get to a place they are happy with....... but the big problem, as I see it, is that in many instances it is a case of the blind leading the blind. Take this, for example: young lad sees his mates with dogs, bragging about them, bees' knees, never jacks, doing the biz etc etc. Young lad wants one of the same, gets pup, does feck all with it, takes it out, pup doesn't behave as he would expect. Gets rid, g

I am so looking forward to more photos as she gets more flesh on those bones. I bet she thinks she's died and gone to doggy heaven: apologies for the slushy emotions, but being able to bring a dog back from the brink of death, or one that is psychologically damaged, is something that makes me well up every time. Anyone that treats a dog like that should get a large dose of their own medicine. I would take great pleasure in starving almost to death the person who did that to her.

What a great vid. Brought back some memories that did. I never raced my dogs, but it was great to see you so chuffed with Tay. And how refreshing to see a film where it actually seemed acceptable to be using dog to hunt stuff, though the interviewer did say it was controversial.

Have a look at this: the Masai's traditional livelihood and land at risk from 'tourism': rich people hunting lions etc. Can you imagine if we weren't allowed to hunt at all so rich foreigners could come and kill our game animals for sport? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/30/maasai-game-hunting-tanzania Avaaz.org are doing a global petition to try and bring pressure to bear on the Tanzanian government. Like Paulus said, social media can and does change peoples' perception on how we should live. Problem being that we hunters are in the minority. What is a way of life to u

I only joined FB to keep up with my niece over in Australia: she posts on there all the time, but to her it is a tool for her work: she's a musician and uses it to promote gigs etc. But I do think its a generation thing: in the days before t'internet etc no one saw the necessity of bleating on about the most trivial details in their lives to all and sundry. Photos were things to be put in albums and treasured as mementos and memories, not spread around for all to see. I mean, you wouldn't have sent off a photo of kids with guns and dead rabbits, for example, to the local paper, would you? Put

I hate to ask this, but do you think that the dog may be suffering from some kind of stress related issues? What is his temperament like in general?

Really lovely bitch

Have they tested for poisoning? Maybe long term low level poison. I know that what I'm about to say can't be what your dog has, but I once heard of some dogs that had lead poisoning after licking their kennels which had been painted with old pain containing lead. Lead poisoning leads to fear of bright lights and nervousness and ultimately convulsions. I just wondered if there was any way he could have been in contact with something that has reached toxic levels in his body, over a period of time. I take it they've tested for various cancers and failure to absorb certain nutrients?

Would 2 Male Dogs Get On In The Same Dog Pen?
skycat replied to Josh1996's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
It does mate just finished a good season with it then. But to be honest i'm just gonna go for a bitch and seperate them when she is in season. Thanks anyway lads. How are you going to separate dog and bitch if you don't have another kennel in the first place? Bring one in the house? Not house trained? -
Did you ask the vet about the risk of a general anaesthetic on a starved dog?
-
OK, so I'm blind must admit I didn't look closely at all. Was only watching the pups. But hey, if it works for the plod, then why not
