  1. As anyone with experience of certain types of dogs will know, it takes a hell of a lot of force to get a dog like that to let go of something if it is determined to kill. If the bloke wasn't used to dispatching large quarry with a knife then he may not have known where to put the blade, so just kept stabbing away in a frenzy while his old terrier was being mullered.
  2. Just a small thing, but I think the lurcher would be happier if she could see a bit of the outside world, rather than just the other dog's run. If she spends most of her time in the kennel while you are at work, being able to see the birds flying past, and the garden, will give her a more relaxing life than staring at the bars of the other kennel. I don't know which way South is in your garden, but it is good to let dogs get the sun on their backs, so South facing is best, providing the dog can get into shade in the summer when it is hot.
  3. ~Are you feeding dry food? IMO small pups should never be fed on dry food as they need to drink far more than is natural to compensate for all that dry shit in their stomach. I would still get the pup to the vet, but would also try feeding a sloppy food: minced raw beef and boiled rice for starters, nice and sloppy. Another thing: if you have only just got this pup, has it only just come off the bitch? And did the breeder have water down for the pups? Some people are stupid enough to think that small pups don't need to drink so maybe not? Pup pee should be watery and very pale straw coloured:
  4. Some Spaniels are so hyper and non stop that they burn off any excess really quickly: its just their metabolism. I've known several that looked like half starved Whippets under their coats, until they steadied down at around 4 years of age. If the dog is fit and well in itself then just make sure to keep it well fed: feeding a small meal high carb/high fat in the morning means it won't be running on empty all day: feeding a Spaniel a small meal an hour or so before exercise/work is not so dangerous as feeding a lurcher or sighthound in this way, and it stops them burning muscle to provide ener
  5. Get one of these: expensive, but really help to desensitize dogs to sounds. Follow the instructions to the letter. I play mine from mid October onwards, playing it louder and louder as the dogs get used to it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sounds-Scary-phobias-including-fireworks/dp/B000XPA5MU
  6. Buy a dog in as an adult: buy someone else's mistakes and bad habits. The sighthound mentality needs careful nurturing as a youngster, and a real bond making between you and the pup, or there's little or no chance you can sort out bad habits or lack of early training unless you are a very skilled behaviourist or trainer. Contact Jim Greenwood if you really want to get the issue sorted out:http://www.jandjgreenwood.co.uk/
  7. Even if people haven't got the time to work a dog as much as they'd like to, I truly believe the dog is better off staying where it is loved and wanted rather than taking the risk of rehoming it to someone else. Some dogs can change hands without batting an eyelid, but many lurchers/sighthounds are much more one man/one family dogs and they really suffer when they're not with their original owner, providing of course that that owner treated them right. I stopped rehoming dogs a few years ago after being hoodwinked/lied to etc. I can't help the dogs that ended up in a bad situation, I just
  8. you need to get a hobby, Penny she as before and after pictures john
  9. Some dogs look as though they shouldn't weigh much at all, but when you weigh them they are a lot heavier than you'd think. A lot depends on bone: dense bones are a lot heavier than less dense bones, and a very fit, strong dog will have denser bones than one that is unfit: same with humans. Also, muscle weighs more than fat, so if the dog is very fit it can also be heavier than if it is unfit. Some people try to get their dogs very light in the belief that they will run better, but each dog should be assessed on its performance over a period of time to find the right weight for the dog.
  10. martin: haven't you got an 'after' photo of the thumb? I love 'before' and 'after' photos: just want to see how it healed.

  12. Just spend as much time as possible with her, and play with her. Plus, get her fit SLOWLY. she is obviously very unfit, so don't do any galloping, twisting or turning with her for at least a month> plenty of long steady walks on the lead. If you try and run her now she'll damage her muscles and joints. I replied to your pm.
  13. First kill, got him down! Posing with her trophy
  14. Sorry, I thought you knew the person who bred your dog: that you could have asked him for their tattoo numbers. Obviously I misread something along the way
  15. If the parents are Hancock dogs they'll have ear tattoos so he can ask Hancock for the breeding.
  16. Are are you sure it wasn't badger shit? They like crapping in holes.
  17. What about something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tubular-Heater-60watts-1ft-Long/dp/B00408OB1W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1349694807&sr=8-3 The trouble with heat lamps in a confined space is that the heat is coming from above, and although heat rises, if the lamp is in a small kennel like yours, the dog can't get out from underneath it if she gets too hot. So long as the dog isn't likely to chew the appliance, it may be better to fit a tubular low wattage heater near the floor. The most important thing to do is to make sure there are no major draughts coming into the ken

As someone has already said: how courageous of you to come on here. I know nothing can really ease your pain, but hopefully you have seen how well thought of your husband was on here, even by people who never knew him in life, like myself. I do hope that this knowledge will go a very small way to easing your heartache even a little. You and your children are in my thoughts and I hope that Craigy's spirit will take comfort from all these messages of good will.
  19. Dead right scothunter: these criminals (though that isn't a strong enough word for those who abuse and murder children) should be automatically deprived of any human rights. It is downright mental that scum like that should have any rights at all, as they have behaved in a totally inhuman manner ... and even worse that the tax payer should pay for them to be looked after for the rest of their lives.
  20. I haven't read all the way through this thread, so I don't know if it has already been suggested, but had you thought of having a stand at a few country fairs/game fairs? I may be talking nonsense as I don't even know the laws regarding selling knives in public, but there's certainly a few stands about at the fairs, though I've yet to see anything of the quality that you produce.
  21. You say she is fussy: do you have other dogs which could be putting her off her food? Even if they aren't right near her, it can sometimes put young dogs off eating in their presence.
